Thread: R8 or morse taper 3? |
11/06/2020 19:29:15 |
I have an rf-30 milling machine, which accepts morse taper 3 tooling. Will it also accept r8 tooling?if so, what is needed to make it work? Which is better to invest in - r8 or m3 tooling? I came across these in the classifieds - will these work in my **LINK**
what do you suggest i invest in to get started?

I just finished rebuilding a mill, which I was able to get at a really good price. Can anyone recommend a beginner’s book for learning the basics? |
Thread: Keeping Shop clean |
07/06/2020 01:07:40 |
I tend to do a little bit of everything in my shop, everything you can possibly imagine ( not just machinework). Controlling the swarf on my myford ml10 has been challenging, as I like a really clean workshop, as different projects require different environments (you don’t want to assemble a v8 with metal shavings hanging off of tool boxes). I use a vacuum quite a bit in the shop. Do any of you here have a system for keeping the shavings from landing all over the place? Like shower curtains or something to that affect? I know it sounds weird, but I feel it is something that has posed a challenge to others in the past besides myself.

Thread: Toothe broke on lathe chuck |

How should i be loading these into the chuck? I’m stumped on which sequence to do it in...tried a few times. |

I have a drawer full of assorted Burnerd chuck jaws. I got them as part of a job lot and they don't fit anything I currently own. If your chuck is a Burnerd and you send me precise dimensions of your broken jaw, I can't promise to have the right ones but I'll have a sift through to see if I have a suitable set. Which dimensions will you need from me? I would really appreciate this. |

Usually caused by overtightening/shock load when at the extreme capacity of the chuck. Bingo!!!!!!
i figured that out once it happened. I have been trying to time it accordingly so i could still use them, but have been unsuccessful. |

Thread: Md-30 Milling Machine Pulley Cover |
21/05/2020 22:28:41 |
I searched chester tools on google with no luck. Does anyone have a link to this unit from chester? i can easily make the cover...i’m just trying to avoid building it because I have restored the unit and just want to use it already! |

If you could post sketches, that would be fantastic. With dimensions if possible. I will check with chester online to see what they have. |

I purchased a derelect, damaged mill from the classifieds, which was in pieces. I restored it inside and out, but i am missing one item - the top cover which encloses the pulley system for the unit. Before i fabricate one from scratch, i figured i’d ask here if anyone knows where i could purchase one. There were no markings on the mill, other the the model number md-30 - i believe its imported. If i could find one close to the right size (which it seems this model is offered by several brands) that would give me a head start. Any leads? ill get a photo of my mill tomorrow, but i believe its almost identical to this one

Thread: Replacement hand wheel for mill |

I believe it is 5/8” shaft diameter. |

I recently acquired a used, import mill, but it is missing a handwheel. I’d rather purchase a replacement wheel than build one from scratch. The backside of the old handle had three little projections (like little teeth) sticking out. Where can i find a replacement wheel with these features? Most of the ones i see online only use a keyway to lock it to the shaft, which isn't what this unit uses.

Thread: Myford ml10 vertical milling slide |
19/04/2020 18:27:10 |
Are there any “better” options out there for a vertical milling slide, instead of the one direct from myford, for the ml10?

Myford makes two vertical milling slides for the ml10. A fixed unit, and a swivelling base unit. Are there any issues with flex/movement on the swiveling version?

Thread: Import cutters and end mills |
17/04/2020 03:39:50 |
This is more based on a hobbyist perspective than anything. If endless amounts of funds were available, of course I would invest in the best cutters available. My question is regarding whether these will last two cuts, or 20 cuts. |
16/04/2020 07:04:12 |
I see there are a lot of kits on amazon for end mills and lathe cutters. Most likely they are imported from overseas. That being said, are these worth trying, or am I wasting my time? I know you get what you pay for, but just had to ask to see if anyone had experience with the cheaper tooling. Edited By Jeremy Smith 2 on 16/04/2020 07:05:04 |

Thread: Center drills |
09/04/2020 03:19:25 |
i noticed that there are several sizes of center drills whichyou can purchase. What designates the use of certain sizes when drilling the end of a bar, for use with a dead center while turning? They are all 60 degrees, but they come in different sizes. Which sizes should I be purchasing for my myford ml10?
