Thread: Myford ml10 spindle removal

John, Is this the correct size belt?**LINK**

12/01/2022 03:25:44

John, the pulley and collar(where there should be a collar that is), I’s one solid piece.

I am going to leave it alone, and use a linkable belt like you mentioned. However, I need to figure this out because in the future, it will need to be serviced possibly.

11/01/2022 19:14:37

Upon looking at your post again, I’m thinking that there is a set screw hidden to the left of the pulley, which is loosened once you tap the spindle out slightly?

11/01/2022 19:12:22

Just so I’m clear - I am not missing a hidden set screw inside of the pulley, correct? That little hole in the pulley I found clearly looked like a casting air pocket, which was slightly opened over use of the machine. I ran my small bit in it, just to be sure it wasn’t a set screw hole. I even blew some air in it just to be sure to clear any chips out of the hole.

Thanks Michael.

Does anyone else here have this parts diagram?

also, any recommendations on whether I should replace the v belt with a linkable belt? I’d really prefer to not dismantle the unit if it isn’t needed.

The only reason I am pulling it apart is to replace the belt. Am I better off just getting a links letter v belt, and leave this all together?

I’m in the process of removing the spindle on my myford ml10. I read on here that one of the steps was to loosen two grub screws on the shaft - I can only find one, however. Is this pulley hole supposed to have one? It was worn over slightly, and I cleared the hole using a small drill bit, but I see nothing

this one has a set screw.

Michael, and I sort of agree with you too. I am no 'exhibition standard' craftsman, I just always try to do my best, but I would give any 'newbie' the benefit of my limited experience and knowledge and encourage them in the hobby. I guess the point I was really trying to make was that manual lathe work, or any sort of machine shop work for that matter, is not a 'black art' and if you just sometimes stand back and appraise its requirements you will more than likely come up with a solution to any problem and identify any potential pitfalls yourself without having every little detail explained and confirmed. Good to chat with you, thanks.

Your comments and posts have been great. Thank you.

i’decided to go with a 100mm chuck. I spoke to rotagrip, and the price for replacement teeth on my bernard far exceeds the cost of an imported chuck, before shipping. They no longer stock the internall jaws, so I’m out of luck there anyways.

I always check for clearances before firing up the machine, as this is common sense, like you all mentioned. You are going to find out when something doesn’t clear when machining - better to find out before you turn the machine on and destroy something.

I have gained a massive amount of experience the past year, which has been great. I was hoping to not have to machine a backing plate because i have some items i need to turn asap for shop repairs. Now to source an imported chuck.

The San Ou chuck needs a backing plate machined for it, correct? Does anyone have a link to these?

Thread: Myford ml10 chucks
15/06/2021 06:03:28

Are there any users on here that run a 125mm chuck on their myford ml10? What kind of drawbacks have you encountered?

I was running a 100 mm chuck on my unit, but only had one set of jaws (internal ones), so I was always limited on how large of an item I could hold. What’s the largest size you can hold comfortably, with a 100 mm chuck, with outer chuck jaws? How about for a 125 mm chuck ?

Also, should i go with a 125 mm chuck, or a 100 mm chuck?

Budget is pretty tight right now, which is why i was leaning towards an aftermarket unit.

Also, being located in canada is another concern, which Is why I wanted to purchase a unit off of amazon. With prime it would be here within a week.

I will check out those bernard jaws later today.

My bernard chuck had one tooth missing on one of the teeth…then another one broke, then another. This is all on the same tooth. Basically I dont want to replace the chuck, but need to due to damage. That, and I am in need of a replacement fairly quick here…go figure!

14/06/2021 04:57:57

I am in need of a new chuck for my myford ml10 lathe. Being relatively new to machining, I haven’t needed to outfit an aftermarket chuck to my lathe.

I was looking at purchasing this unit from amazon **LINK**

That being said, do I have to machine a backplate from scratch, or are they available to purchase? Which steps do I need to follow, to do this properly?

Could I reuse the backing plate which came off of the old burnard 100 mm chuck… or is it specific to burnerd?

What does everyone here recommend as a replacement chuck? Should I get one size larger for my ml10?

I have a monster 6” chuck, but when the teeth are extended, it doesn’t clear the bed. Trying to find a happy medium on size.

24/05/2021 19:26:24

There was a tooth broken on the chuck a while back, and then another one broke...you get the idea. I will post some pics tonight of which chuck it is.

I’d like to see if i could find some teeth for this chuck, instead of purchasing a cheap knock off chuck, but will see I guess.

Well, two more of thr teeth on my chuck’s jaws finally gave,

It is for a myford ml10 burnerd chuck. Is there anyone here who has an extra set of these, or knows where to find them? It is a self centering jaw, three teeth.
