Thread: Machinist level
17/03/2022 17:02:32

I have not had time today , but tomorrow i will have a look using the various links that you all have posted. Needs to be at least 100mm long to fit within the sight slot. The Dia is 16mm, so i suspect 14 to 15mm to allow for the card backing. Thanks for all the input as usual.

Hello again . I have taken it apart. The ends do indeed come off. They were a very tight press fit. The Glass vial is 100mm long & the dia of the case is 16mm. So the search begins. It was full of plaster holding the glass in place. Now all cleaned out . Many thanks for all the help guys, as usual. I will post a pic once it's all cleaned up & back together.

Yes it does come apart, ends unscrew, vial is usually held in with plaster of paris.

Ah, I did try to gently turn the end, I heard a crunching of glass so i stopped. Maybe i will just have to bite the bullet & unscrew & see what is left.

Thanks Jason. Had a quick look , but need to spend some time on there site. Not sure if the unit comes apart as the actual spirit level part is 9" long. I'm not sure that bit comes apart. I have removed from the cast frame but it looks like it's a complete unit.

Thread: Dividing head for Tom Senior Mill advice
10/03/2022 22:28:18

I have the same mill. I bought a 8" indexing rotary table , with the 8" 3 jaw chuck. It was way too big for the mill table. I have since sold that & bought a 6" Vertex style & it's just the right size for the Senior. No indexing plates though. Not something i think i may ever need. Oh what have i said. Never say never.

P.S. Nice looking machine you have got there rannsachair. If you are thinking of doing any mods to it, I have a few youtube vids of the many mods done. Tom Senior light vertical

I was having a birthday present parachute jump bought for me by my kids.

I jumped out of the aircraft. It was then i realised i had forgotten what the instructor had told me about the chute deployment. After some time speeding to earth i saw something approaching me at speed. It was a man clinging to a cooker coming up.

I shouted , hey do you know anything about parachutes, he replied no, do you know anything about gas cookers.

Thread: Shed insulation
06/03/2022 23:15:53

Peter. some years ago when i was rebuilding Insurance write off motorcycles & scooters for a hobby, i ran out of storage space. So i bought a 10 foot by 8 foot steel shed. The condensation was really bad. So i purchased from the Builders yard Insulation panels with foil on one side. I adhered these to the whole interior of the shed including the doors. I even foil taped the joints. These were 50mm thick.

The result was not good & it still was always soaking wet. If you have already ordered it, or are sure it is what you want then i would strongly consider doing spray foam insulation. I think the problems with my shed was it as i guess they all are the profile is either curved or castle wall corrugated steel. So when insulated there is no contact on the high point of the corrugation. That is where the problem is.

If you spray foam it then i am sure it will be fine. This is how i built my new steel garage/ workshop.

Thread: ML7 toolpost Thread

Hi Ian.

I changed all the belts on my Super 7 when i bought it a few years ago. From your model year i would say if you have a clutch it will be the early type. It is a cast iron horseshoe type. It expands onto a drum. I have no experience with that version other than knowing from friends machines that.

The cast iron ring is very brittle & can break in half if not looked after. Also with mine not having that type of clutch , cannot be sure how easy it is to strip.

I think i do have a ML7 manual in PDF format. If i have you are more than welcome to have a copy.

With that you can see every component & work out any problems before stripping down.

I bought genuine belts from Myford & have never had any problems with slipping at all.

I can confirm that it is indeed BSF. I fitted a quick change tool post & made a new sleeved nut for the top of it. I put a video on youtube of doing it. If you search steviegtr on youtube you will find it.

Thread: MYFORD LATHE LUBRICATION, yet again !
06/03/2022 14:35:50

Synthetic oil clings much better to all surfaces.

I am not an oil specialist. But having built quite a few performance engines in the past can confirm it is far superior to mineral oil.

However i guess a lot of people think some old mineral oil is better for there machines.

I think a lot of special oils are special for a financial reason. Not all are & there are circumstances where a certain viscosity is required

Quite often related to hydraulic valve trains etc. Also gearboxes.

I don't think old or new lathes are actually built around oil.

I will continue to use whatever is on the shelf.

Many years ago Mobil oil did an experiment using a brand new Nissan 200sx. The car was ran for 200,000 miles, only doing the services as stated by the Nissan motor company. Using Mobil 1 fully synthetic oil This experiment was overseen by recognised company Something the RAC. I don't remember which it was.

The engine was disassembled & all components measured. The parts were still in tolerance for a new part. However If you only have some mineral car engine oil on the shelf , then i am sure that will suffice.

I am talking about general lube on a lathe. If it has a gearbox then that is different. That will be a oil type recommended.

Fully synthetic engine oil. 21st century.

Anything else is futile.

Thread: Making a Carriage stop for a lathe

Very nice Nigel may have to do that with mine looks easier than having to fiddle with the two bolts underneath the stop assembly

One of my requirements for this sort of thing is that tools are not needed for use. I've posted my current stop, but having made it from aluminium it's spread and becoming less effective. And I've never used the adjustable stop because it's not accurate.

So the new one will look like this:

carriage stop v1.jpg

and

exploded carriage stop.jpg

Mm interesting. Will like to see the finished product.

This is my answer to a gearbox fitted Myford S7 making use of the tapped hole provided for the oiler. It has provided satsfactory service over many tears.

Hi again Greensands. I have been working on my Myford tonight. If i had the stop where yours is fitted , then i could not engage backgear.

Steve.

Hey Greensands. That looks great. Not seen one like that before. yes
