Thread: Scorchio!
18/07/2022 23:18:35

Had to go from Leeds to Barnsley to pick up my new Ham radio. 33 in the van & A/C don't work. Felt like a 100 mile journey. But worth it in the end. A few beers have cooled me down nicely now though. Tomorrow even hotter it says.

It is something I never used. It looks like a large tank on there.

I had a 1960 moggy minor traveller. This was around 1968. Burned oil like no tomorrow until i found a miracle cure. It was called piston seal. Drove round all night at 30mph as instructions.

I think it burned more oil than ever after that.

That would do it. No chance of the screw binding & undoing the finest threads yes.

Yes the green casting well of line hole. Going to check mine now.

I wonder if you could pin it.. just in case the locktite came unstuck.

Ah yes I see what you mean. Fingers crossed. I guess you could even silver solder if needs be. Although thread soak might be an issue. Great idea so far.

Looking good.

Will there be enough meat on the nut to get descent size screws in to hold that flange.

Thread: Wi Fi router

Hi, I need WiFi in my shed. Shed is out of radio range of the ORANGE router, so can't use a Wi Fi booster. I don't want to use a mains setup, as the house is 3 phase (common neutral). Ideally I can run twisted pair cat 5 underground cable in an existing duct, from the Orange router, but what sort of Wifi thing do I need in the workshop?
BobH

This one after trying a few works just fine , & my workshop is a wayze from the house router & it works great. See pic. Not expensive either. Netgear.

Grinned from ear to ear. My Radio Ham licence came through. I only took my City & Guilds RAE exam in 1989. But they still accepted them.

Steve.

How did it 'come through'? How does an '89 result qualify for a current Amateur License in the UK? Or is the Tech Exam no longer required in the UK? Like a CB 'license'..?

What' your callsign?

Joe

Hi Joseph. The exam i took in 1989 was the RAE. At that time morse code was still an active part of the future exams. But as someone below has remarked, that was scrapped & no longer a part of the tests. The main limits of the Foundation licence are with the max 10W power. But most frequencies are open to use. I am M7DOZ. I simply rang Ofcom & asked the question. They emailed me a application form. I sent this back filled in , with copies of my City & Guilds Certificates.

1 Week later i had my callsign etc. I need to sit the Intermediate exam now.

I have sat a couple of mock past exam papers & passed with around 75% The pass mark here in the UK is 60%.

Thread: Distance of air compressor to workshop?

There is no distance. Any distance is ok. It could be half a mile away. Air . Water & hydraulic. No matter it matters not.

Thread: Tap and die trouble
07/07/2022 15:30:58
Posted by IanT on 07/07/2022 08:50:51:

Good advice above Chris but let me add another thought - it is very hard to hold larger bar for tapping in the vice (or 3 jaw) chuck without marking it or it slipping.

So I generally use an ER collet block to grip the material and then hold the collet block in the vice soft jaws. It will not overcome oversized material but does make tapping very much easier. Love my collet blocks!

Regards,

IanT

You beat me to it. I had a similar problem running a die, which was a 3/8" BSW. Ended up using the collet block. Although Whitworth is very course & a swine at best of times.

Sorry Steve wgen you say " Keith is a acomplished engineer " I don't agree he use's some very crude methods and doesn't appear to be able to use a micrometer, does he know about model steam engines very much.

H

OO nasty. I have only seen odd youtube video's of him doing repair work on STEAM engines. Anyway i am not the person to crib anyone elses work. As i am only a Hammer chewer myself.

Oh my Hopper. Why are you guys so negative.

He & i know him personaly would not spin a yarn. Keith is a acomplished engineer & musician. He is not giving out bull--it. Come over from ausi & see for yourself.

Steve.

28/06/2022 02:29:22

Just to add i have watched 3 parts of his video's & am proud to say i own a Myford. Very nicely made machine. Now i know why they command such a high price.

Steve.

28/06/2022 02:06:35

Have a look at Keith Appleton's youtube. He is doing a 4 part series of the Myford factory. This will only be of interest to any Myford owners.

Enjoy. Some lovely machines.
