Hi,

What is the preferred option for hearth "bricks" that is easily obtainable? I wish to make up a small hearth for silver soldering 16mm scale boilers and read somewhere that the lightweight aerated (Celcon?) blocks work. Is this correct? Obviously I do not want something that could harbour some dampness only to explode at a critical soldering moment!

Hi,

I am thinking of a collet set up for a ML10 . I am mainly going to hold small gears etc for boring out rather than holding tools so I am leaning towards ER 25 on a backplate rather than using the MT. Is this the best way to go? I know i will have to machine the backplate but I must confess to being slightly confused as to which parts to machine.

As the local decent lathe search is drawing a blank and I am wasting good workshop time I was looking at the Warco WM240B. Thinking that the belt drive might be a more reliable option and more like a "traditional" machine, but one I can have now without having a 500 mile round trip to view something. Any thoughts or do I just put my faith in electronics and take my chances?

Thanks to all for your posts. It really is a minefield, there are a number of good machines out there but spread all over the UK and travelling around not an option. Its a good point that at least buying new saves all the hassle. Its also worth pointing out that Im into small scale live steam so at the clockmaker end of the scale, so a Hobbymay/Sherline would probably suffice.

Thanks Paul, I presumed that modern brushless motors were more tolerant of stop start but maybe not. I must admit the whole buying a lathe thing is quite stressful, especially at my sub £1000 budget. Decent ML10/ok ML7/new Chinese!!

Sorry Im going off topic but I think you have answered my question. Might give the ML7 a go.

Hi, still searching for a lathe that is local and a ML7 has come up nearby but without the "desirable optional" clutch. I am conscious of the comments on lathes.co.uk about running single phase motors flat out so the clutch would seem to be imperative. How really useable is a clutchless ML7 and the need to protect the motor. The lathe for sale has a Brooke Crompton so Im guessing may need replacing some time soon anyway.

Hi Reg,

Nr St John`s, there are plenty on the web but all located too far away to view. I was contemplating the old Brit versus new Chinese conundrum. I like the simplicity of say a Myford ML10/7 rather than electronic speed controls etc but the lack of local options means buying new maybe the way to go.
