Thread: Making a Drawbar
07/04/2022 19:49:50

Thanks everyone I just checked my Pultra drawbar with a file and it’s not hard.

07/04/2022 19:02:10

Hi all

I want to make a drawbar for some 10mm Schaublin collets I have about 50 because they are a perfect fit for a Pultra , even the chap at Smart&Brown said that’s what they recommend because Pultra collets are so hard to find, I have a M10X.75 tap but I am not sure what to use to make the bar , will mild bright steel be strong enough, or would stainless steel be better, also if mild steel would be okay would I need to harden it,

thanks Dell

0BA, 1/4" BSF, 1/4" UNF, 6mmX1 all posible. How many do you need, Straight,45* and 90*. Noel.'

Hi Noel

i need 4 straight 2 for each lathe.

Found some 6 mm that are similar looking but if I can’t find 0BA I will give them a try not a lot of money and as Duncan said it’s not exactly critical.

03/04/2022 18:59:45

It is a 1940’s Pultra made in Manchester uk and a 2BA spanner is a good fit to the hex and most of the small nuts to adjust the crosslide gibb are BA that what makes me think it’s BA but I can’t find anyone selling any let alone brass ones that I would prefer , I have two 17/70’s to do so I need 4 and I have managed to find the paint code to the original cream colour.

I have emailed about the belt drive conversion but had no reply

Thread: To harden or not to harden that is the Question
28/12/2021 13:54:47

Thanks for all the advice from everyone, it all up and working and I am very pleased with the almost finished job , I say almost because I have to make some sort of handle for tailstock as it’s very smooth and my grip is not very good.

First job completed was a leaver that was missing and I am very impressed with the industrial sewing machine motor with the foot pedal it is very controllable and has plenty of torque even at very slow speed.

After you get the stud hole drilled and tapped, peen the backside so the stud cannot be screwed all the way through. That will keep you from accidentally screwing it in so far that it breaks the T slot on the mill.

I had to cut the bolts down so I purposely cut them slightly short just to be sure they didn’t go to far but I also peened over last thread anyway.

Thanks for replies everyone

that is what I thought but it’s always good to get other opinions especially when there thinking is the same as what I thought, it’s when you get loads of differing opinions that it’s a problem deciding what opinion’s to take.

Many thanks Dell

But what is the answer to the question

spent the afternoon milling some long small long T nuts ready to fit the Multifix QCTP they are 50mm long 6mm thick , had to file the last 1/2 mm because I couldn’t get enough meat above the vice and get a good grip, once fitted they should not have to be removed the only bit that will be undone fairly regularly will be the 10 mm bolt in centre of the 8mm plate that is going on to the T’s so do I need to harden and temper them.

Thread: Fitting Multifix QCTP

In that case I would position it so when raised to top of adjustment the bottom edge of the tool holder is approx 3mm below ctr height which will allow for some material being ground off the tops of your 4mm toolbits and would happily allow 8mm tooling to still be used as the holder will drop to 9mm below ctr height.

Thanks JasonB That makes sense because there may be times that I need to use 8mm tooling although not very often but it’s good to have the option..

thanks and merry Xmas Dell

Thanks for the replies and advice,I only repair antique clocks that’s why I normally use the smaller tool bits but I want to start hopefully making my own tools when I can.

Hi everyone
I am going to fit my Multifix QCTP over Xmas and as the holders will take up to 12mm shank and I only use 4-5-6mm tool bits I need to pack and I am wondering if there is any advantage/ disadvantage to where the tool bit goes, I have square stock for the packing but do I put the bit in the holder on top and pack at bottom or bit on bottom and packing on top .
Peter at PeWe tools suggested that I put 8mm on top of compound to fix the QCTP on and someone else suggested 12mm so obviously where the tool bit goes will determine what size plate I put on compound.
Thanks Dell.

Yours does look very similar to my one at bottom of your picture but it looks like yours has nuts and bolts but my one has two pins.

Hi all

some how I have managed to miss lay ( or lost ) a bracket from the quick close on my Pultra 17/70, has anyone got a 17/50 or 17/70 with quick close that could give me the dimensions of the part that the quick close handle fixes on then fixes onto back of headstock with two pins, I have the pins , I could probably work out overall size but the gap in between the two pin holes would be a problem, the item is a square U shape with two holes on either side.

Many thanks in advance Dell
