Thanks for the replies

Yes I can’t fault Warco for refunding my money but took lots of phone calls to get sorted, I have already purchased the Emco Unimat SL although I have yet to receive it and as I am mostly only going to be making very small brass clock parts it should be okay, only time will tell.

i have seen about the motor shortcomings and the one I have purchased has two motors one on the lathe and one on the mill so maybe they have had an easier life but we will see.

Hi all

Well the Warco I purchased has gone back, I thought I would buy direct from Warco (used) because the website said that the second hand lathes were fully serviced and come with a six month warranty.
Well the lathe turned up 350’ backlash on cross feed, quite a bit of backlash on line feed, cable flange broken so cable was rubbing on metal, they said it must have serviced as it had a new circuit board.
Anyway they sent out a recon cross feed and I fitted it also fitted a new cable flange because I was not plugging it in without, fired it up all seemed ok until I started to turn a bit of bright mild steel it lasted 7 or 8 minutes then a clunk motor still running but not chuck,I had had enough told them to collect it and refund my money.
It took two weeks to get my money back but I got it.
As I still needed a small lathe and as I am only mainly going to be making small parts in brass I did a lot of research and started looking at EMCO Unimat but like most thing’s reviews were good and bad but what I did find out was that Unimat gradually got worse quality with each upgrade so although parts are a bit of a problem I have plumped for a very early EMCO Unimat SL complete with powered mill.

Thread: Broaching

Any particular reason it has to be a hexagon? As above, there are hexagon socket sets out there, if a square hole is out of the question. I used to have a socket set with a hexagon driver, even - probably 1/2” across the flats, though.

The reason it has to be hex is that the spring let down arbor is hexagon and I need to be able to change to the arbor that fits the square of whatever mainspring barrel I am removing the spring from, the picture in first post is only one of six and each end of each one has a square hole to fit different clock barrel arbors.

That would be an option JasonB if I had a mill.

Thanks for the replies

the tool I want to make is a clock mainspring winder to get the mainspring out of the clock barrel for servicing and or replacing so I will be using it quite a lot .

although I will be using the tool I made regularly I hopefully won’t be using the broach more than once that is why the tool company said I should get the 16mm shank broach and it SHOULD be strong enough to press in , but I would prefer to do it or have it done with rotary. Broaching as I understand it would do a better job job.

Hi all
Is there anyone on this forum that could cut a 11mm hexagonal hole in a piece of mild steel rod either by broaching or other method ?
The rod is small enough to post approximately 6” and anyone willing and able to do it if they could PM me.
Bellow a picture of what is to fit in it ,although the hole needs to be approximately 3” deep the hex only needs to be 1/2 to 5/8” deep.
Thanks in advance Dell

update I have a 11mm rotary broach with a 16mm shank but the holder is to expensive for just one job.
