Thread: Rear parting |

Hi all just received rear parting tool from Cowells and upon installing parting tool even with as much packing as I can fit in, the cutting edge ( but on the bottom as it’s upside down) it is still 1.5 to 2 mm lower than the dead centre in tail stock, any suggestions? |

Hi you don’t have to etch steel as today’s primers have very good bonding to steel . Dell |

The Cowells 90ME lathe I just purchased has a part missing from the Headstock spindle indexing unit could anyone supply a photo and dimensions as I think that making one would be a good place to start me of getting reacquainted with using a lathe. thanks in advance Dell |

Today I went to see Howard at Myford-lathes and purchased three jaw chuck (not Pratt Burnerd to much money for now) but Cowells , Collett chuck, Jacob drill chuck and arbor, live centre, dead centre, this will get me up and running and I just need to keep my eyes open and go to tool fairs. The lathe came just before I went out so I haven’t unpacked it yet more to follow. Dell |

Hi all thanks for all the replies and yes it definitely 14X1.5 and yes Hollowpoint it is the one you know although I didn’t pay what he was asking and he assures me it is in superb condition and if you know it that helps to ease my mind ( I hope it’s as good as you say) . i have seen that it’s possible to change the shaft to the later one but I am going to see someone tomorrow as he said he should have most accessories that I need but it just depends on price. As I said I haven’t used a lathe for about 50 years that’s why I tried to start with a less expensive ut it was not to be, I have two clocks that need new mainspring barrels as they are as hard to find as rocking horse poo but I will be making a couple in aluminium to get used to things before going to brass. Thanks Peak4 I will check that out. Dell |

The chap I purchased the Unimat lathe off decided to have the lathe back and refund my money, So I have bitten the bullet and purchased a Cowells 90ME ( I think I need to have a lie down). i know I am a fussy sod but I wouldn’t be happy teaching my grandson to use it as I wasn’t happy to use it myself. i still have the case open with PayPal as I haven’t got refund yet because I have only just sent it, but the fact that he has agreed that I can return it will go in my favour if I have to go back to Paypal . i am looking for some accessories for it the shaft is 14X1.5 if anyone has a chuck lying around they want to sell please PM me. Thanks Dell |

That is the trouble with eBay nothing is checked as to weather it is safe to sell and in my opinion it is dangerous to have exposed 220volt AC and 220volt DC terminals exposed. Dell |

Well the lathe turned up today not had chance to test it, not very happy with the wiring as it’s just taped up in places but nothing I can’t sort out , I will make sure everything else is ok first. Michael I will measure column when I get a chance. I noticed it hasn’t got any chuck tommy bars so if anyone has a spare pair willing to sell please let me know. Dell |
