Thread: Small internal threading tool

JasonB yes

Found a 7x1 tap (unused since 198?) in a box, clamped it in a toolholder, eyeballed a likely-looking approach for the cutting-edge to the (brass) work, ran it in by hand to test - think it went in 5 passes in the end..

Thanks all for your help & suggestions

A great response; Thanks all for taking the trouble.

Paul & Jason, it had already crossed my mind to introduce a 1mm-pitch tap to my angle-grinder, of course as pointed out this isn't necessary, so 'trialling' a tap in the toolpost is what is going to happen first.

The threads on the bought-in bar are perfectly formed, even, and clean - only undersize - if I can cut the female side to suit, it'll be a bit of work and extra orders saved.

(Martin, like you I suspect it's been turned on 3/8 stock, saving pennies off their material costs or using up some leftovers).

Thanks for the serial tap suggestions, and also for the 'new-screw' idea - I'll try to avoid ordering extra stuff in if I can, likewise, if I can expedite the job without having to set up to make a new screw I will try and do that first.

Clive, thanks once again - your drawing is useful and somewhere I have GHT's thoughts on small boring tools - a combination of both will see me right, I think.

I'll let you know what happens..

Many thanks - I have all I wished for and more, there; I'm grateful for the extra thoughts & specific suggestions..

I'm making a backstop to go through the mandrel and have a piece of nominal 10x1mm studding which is perfectly even and nicely formed, but down on major dia. (- it's at 9.37) - bit too small for comfort, especially as I suspect the pitch dia. is under ( - the crests don't look truncated) and as a feedscrew, I want it to have a positive 'feel' and not be a rattle fit.

If it had been a simple fixing, or the studding had been half a mil. fatter, I'd have tapped it.

Hi - a quick question.

I need to cut a 10x1mm pitch internal thread so would like a 60* tool that will fit up an 8.5mm (-ish) hole.

I've noted the little sets of pre-ground round-shank HSS for square holders, that come in sizes down to 6 or even 4mm.

Does anyone have these & know what size holes they 'start' from?

David,

..as you already have the worm, replicating the wheel shouldn't be to difficult - it could (is likely to?) be an off-the-shelf-item in any case..

I must go to work, hopefully this post will help prompt a response to help you.

The old stems look a bit woody - the leaves are a bit immature, but hmm, could it be a Hydrangea? ..some of them will 'run'..

..what's the leaf arrangement, are they in opposed pairs?

What Nigel B says (2 pole,250w, 63-size frame) but is a B14 face mount rather than a flange - the spigot / ring is 60mm and the bolt PCD is 75mm.

A problem that you might find is that the OEM motor has a 14mm shaft and the cheaper modern ones commonly tend to be 11mm; though shouldn't be hard to sleeve or make a new drive collar if you have to.

Shaft length is 30mm and the keyway slot 5mm.

Not specifically Clarke, but worth checking that the fan / housing are on square / fitted correctly - I've had one generic motor with skewed fan housing contacting edge of fan..

Despite severe flooding early in the year 2022 is the driest year in the UK since 1976. Strangely it's also the driest year ever recorded in California whilst North Texas had 2 feet of snow. Just examples: unusual droughts, downpours, heatwaves, extreme cold, doldrums and storms all around the world. Extreme weather extremes that occurred a few times per century are now happening every 5 years or so.

I wonder what could possibly explain turbulent weather across the whole planet? I thought scientists had a jolly good explanation but the forum put me right: obviously you can't trust anyone who knows what they're talking about! Common-sense innit.

Normally the 'El Nino' and 'La Nina' cycles in the Pacific run in fairly regular cycles, however we have been 'enjoying' a 'La Nina' event for the last three years which is unprecedented, I think. More here - scroll down to see the the background;

Try using 'Milling Machine Sacrificial Drive Gear' as a search term - there seems to be a UK seller.

Mine finally 'grounds-out' as the collar on the feedscrew hits the face of the nut, I think.. ..I'll go check..

Indeed it does.

A quick checklist;

..there's nothing fitted under the nose of the cross-slide to act as a 'stop'?

..there is nothing attached to or protruding from any of the cross-slide T slots to act as a 'stop'

..you can still see some feedscrew threads under the slide at 'your' end?

..have you got the tailstock pushed right back out of the way at the end of the bed?

Looks like your bolts are 'one-size-smaller', but your nuts are std. BA - o/s/smaller nuts are available, I know the likes of EKP do them.

Mr B (and Mr W) have an eye for detail and proportion that it can be hard to emulate - I've been trying to make some caps fpr an IC engine, and trying to get something that looks like I want ti too is SO hard - the drawn ones are unconvincingly 'lumpish', trying refinements to make them them look 'scale' 'elegant' and 'right' is becoming on of the hardest parts of the job..

Heatshrink comes in 82mm flat-width tube = 50mm dia. - maybe a narrow 'tyre' with a small overhang either side would pull itself tight over the edges of the rim?

The apron sight-glass seal could be, er, 'sub-optimal' - the one on mine looked suspiciously like an offcut of hard pvc pipe, from there the oil spreads down the apron, along the bottom of the front and drips off the 'h/stock end' corner..

..satisfactorily cured substantially slowed-down with an O ring.

Wouldn't surprise me to find that your brown blob is a residual artefact from the factory rather than a current problem, if the clean oil followed it out..

..It's not Soy sauce is it? laugh
