Thread: Unimat 3 lathe motor
30/11/2021 10:48:12

Does the motor rotate at its “normal” speed(s)?

There are some small capacitors in it. Are they still OK?

Thread: What O-ring is this?
12/11/2021 11:59:27

It seems to be a “square”-ring, not an “o”-ring.

Why this shape is applied, I do not know.

Does this ring constantly see gas, also when you do not use the equipment?

Thread: Music on TV Programmes.
05/11/2021 13:31:18

And what about the (sometimes?) ugly music from the other side when you are in a phone waiting queue?

When the phone was answered I more than once asked the quuestion: “which person (in your company) chooses the music? I never got a proper answer. 😉

Thread: Ferrous, facing, HSS tool geometry
25/10/2021 10:55:07

I am no expert at all but wouldn’t be better to use a right hand facing tool and to cut from the center to the outside?

And, of course, there is much difference in circumferential speed with increasing radius, so not always optimal.

Jouke

Thread: Unimat SL modifications
05/10/2021 09:06:03

I saw now that both toolholders and toolpost are made from aluminium.

Dimensions are probably too small for Emco C5 but I have to check.

There are more aluminium sets offered on eBay but then from China.

David,

Do you have a trade name for the QCTP.

Regards,

Jouke

02/10/2021 16:37:55

Yes, the qctp is interesting. Is the a set that is available on the market?. The tool holder is made from steel, so to see.

I would be interested in such a set for the Emco C5.

Thread: Small dc brushed motors
23/08/2021 09:15:41

Some years ago I completed a 1 meter long tugboat, originally built by my son 25 years ago.

Searching for a motor I found information on the internet to use a 12V brushed motor from a car interior blower.

Cheap and with sufficient power to give the boat the speed belonging to its scale.

I would guess: typically Dutch? 😉

Thread: Nickel Electroplating
19/06/2021 14:38:59

Nickel electrolytically deposited on the substrate is delivered by the nickel present in the bath. One of the bath constituants is often nickel sulphate. Of course, some ions dissolve from the anode but this hardly contributes to the coating.

Thread: GPO test meter fault
14/06/2021 20:35:27

Approx. 5 years ago it appeared that the 2A (highest) range of my at least 30 years old digital multimeter Circuitmate DM20L did not work anymore. It appeared that not only the fuse was blown but also the low ohmic resistor belonging to that switch range was destroyed. Possiblibly, the fuse had been to slow. I was able to replace that resistor.

The multimeter is still going strong.

What about Topic Starter Frankenstein. Did he disappear?

Thread: Hand cleaner

👍

olive oil, as John Haine mentions, will have the same function as margarine/butter.

My way of removing black machine dirt from my hands is to take a (very) small bit of margarine “butter” and rub that out on the dirt. You will experience that most of the dirt already dissolves in the butter. Then followed by spreading some washing up liquid on your hands. Finally, you rinse the mixture with the dirt in it from your hands under a running tap. But I understand that application of a protective cream before doing the “dirty” job is a further improvement.

Thread: Was this embrittlement, or what?
15/04/2021 09:12:18

Hydrogen embrittlement not be confused with liquid metal embrittlement.

During electrolytic qalvanising you do not only coat the substrate with a layer of metal but can also “pull” hydrogen into the substrate to be coated. This atomic hydrogen diffuses to higly stressed areas (crack tips) in the steel and there induce hydrogen induced cracking (hic). Hydrogen seems then to follow the tip of the growing crack. By the end the part fails because of a to large crack.

Hydrogen induced cracking should not be onfused with stress corrosion cracking in which a crack grows under stress in a corrosive medium.

Liquid metal embrittlement is dissolving of atoms of solid metal into a liquid metal. This especially happens along grain boundaries of the solid metal. So, after cooling down, you will find grain boundaries higly enriched with e.g. zinc. These weak grain boundaries may cause cracking if the part is under (a local) stress.

Thread: Anodising and Passivating
14/04/2021 21:24:33

Passivation is even applied on stainless steel to further improve corrosion resistance.

It is done with, e.g., hot nitric acid so that iron is removed from the surface and chromium enriched to form chromium oxyde.

I remember this process for components to be applied in aerospace machinery.

Liquid metal embrittlement? In this case molten zinc penetrating into the grain boundaries during brazing?

Thread: Gluing Aluminium
31/03/2021 17:17:44

MEK and Aceton used for the final cleaning step should be pure so that there is no residue left behind after evaporation. I mentioned Fokker for their bonding of aluminium for their fuselages. If I remember me well they applied anodising with open pores prior to bonding. And then again they had to be very careful to remove all anodising liquid to exclude corrosion afterwards during lifetime.

Good to hear how to bond DRO brackets to the lathe in stead of bolting! I do not like to drill holes in original parts of a “vintage” lathe.

I think chemical or mechanical cleaning will be a better pretreatment than degreasing with an organic liquid.
