Thread: backplate

looking to buy a new 10" chuck for my student. it comes without a backplate. has anyone turned down an old faceplate and used it as a backplate for a chuck?

i have an old damaged L0 taper faceplate that would be ideal for a conversion, what are peoples thoughts on this?

would a t63 toolpost be suitable for a mark 1 student? it a bit difficult getting information out of suppliers. rdg say that a t63 is suitable for bantams and chipmasters but is also suitable for lathes with 5 1/2 to 6" heights. but they haven't confirmed that it will be ok for a student despite contacting them. can anyone confirm either way? also i am sure i saw a comparison chart for the different sizes of QCTP but i didn't bookmark it and now can't find it again.

right i have got my head around wiring in an inverter to power the motor and i can also wire in a pendant to stop start and reverse the motor. how would i go about wiring in new switches for the start stop on the lathe itself and a forward reverse switch. it appears that all i need to do is replace the original switchgear with modern low voltage stuff to run through the inverter but being a clanky and not a sparky i'm unsure where to start. can anyone help?

Thread: tallow sticks
06/06/2019 15:27:52

does anyone know where to obtain tallow sticks. we used them when i worked for the MOD for tapping blind holes. the tallow acted as a lubricant and also as the tap went down the tallow got forced out along with the swarf allowing the hole to be tapped to its fullest depth. i cant find any reference to them on the internet.

fitter Turner by trade with cnc milling experience. 52 years old and just bought my own lathe. Forced into it as my workshop in the local school will no longer be available due to my contact retiring. Main interest is old lambrettas. Real money pits!

Thread: mark 1 1/2 student with an inverter

i have recently bought a student mark 1 1/2 (the crossover from mark 1 to mark 2).

can it be wired with an inverter to the main junction box of the lathe so that the original stop start works and i can use the original gears?

i know that i will have to wire the motor in delta configuration
