Thread: Tom Senior s head alternatives? |

Try raising the knee up as far as it will go, that will give an idea how long the leadscrew is and if it can get a decent height above the minimum that any machining could be carried out at, then raising the main column is possible. A piece of 40mm aluminium would work, it doesn't even have to milled flat both sides to work. Holes for longer bolts would have to be drilled in it, I think they are 3/8 BSF. The base is a weldment made of steel, not cast iron. |

I would think that the steel you have is suitable for making the spindle, there will be no wear of the surface involved, and all steel alloys have similar stiffness. |
Thread: Problem with an Altivar 11 driving a 3 phase motor. |

I googled Altivar 11 and there were lots of hits including how to do factory resets. I don't know what the difference between the model 11 and the 12. I bought a 12 model from the inverter drive supermarket because they have produced their own quick start guides which even somebody like me can understand. All of the external wiring, speed control and switchgear is shown clearly, as well as the programming of the most useful parameters. The original manuals are also available for the electricians amongst us. |

Have you tried it at varying rpm? |

Sorry, I had a little trouble with the cheap switching which I used with the Altivar 12. A spray with AC90 did the trick, Servisol switch cleaning lubricant would have been better. I tried googling Altivar 11 and there was a lot of info, including the factory reset. Edited By old mart on 01/04/2021 15:36:28 |

I have found that the slow curing Araldite is stronger than the quick type. |
Thread: Tom Senior s head alternatives? |

I have been thinking about raising the Z axis height on the light vertical, but anything more than 1 1/2" would mean the knee running short of engagement. Also the length of the knee leadscrew would be a factor. I see what you mean by the lack of machined surface on the top tf the column, I looked through the Tom Senior threads in the forum. There is still the overarm bore in the column and the flat face for mounting, but that still leaves the problem of finding some make of vertical head, and one with a quill also. |
Thread: 1.1 kw brushed motor Torque |

I wonder if anyone has changed the belts and pulleys on one of these lathes to give lower speeds and more torque? |
Thread: gun with trigger for bead blasting cabinet |
31/03/2021 20:02:38 |
There are lots of guns with triggers and a set of nozzles on ebay, you will have to blast in short bursts with any gun if the air supply is low volume. |

Check your switches if they are remote. |
Thread: Taps with plus sizes? |
31/03/2021 19:48:22 |
Pre plating and anodising taps will be different oversizes depending on the exact conditions. At the museum we have a large number of taps, mostly given to us and I get rid of the oversize ones before they cause problems. |
Thread: ER32 collets |
31/03/2021 16:20:30 |
When thinking about clamping a 3mm cutter in an er32 collet, it is unlikely that the shank of the cutter would be as long as the collet. |
30/03/2021 20:45:23 |
You would think that the parallel clamping feature would mean that the collets always had one diameter right through. I have some er25 collets with only half the length at the nominal size. |

The bond would be even better if you could shot blast the areas of the joint and then degrease them. |
Thread: ER32 collets |

A backup would be better than nothing, but everything depends on the diameter held, 3mm would be better than larger and clamping 6mm would be risky. |

It is a shame that schools do not seem to teach the same things that they used to. I went to a secondary modern which had metalwork, woodwork and technical drawing, all of which I learned. |
Thread: Honda 125 electrics |
29/03/2021 19:07:03 |
If you convert to 12V you may not be able to use a 60/55 watt headlight bulb as the output of the alternator may not be high enough. I would ask the question on a motorcycle forum, somebody will have the exact answer for your bike. |

A few days I had a "zoom" get together with a few cycling friends. One topic of discussion was why do bicycles use left-hand threads in certain places? I let my friends discuss this then jumped in with the right answer. In case it's not already been mentioned, the reason has to do with what's termed hypocyclic fretting precession. I dont think anyone paid any attention to your answer, or understood its meaning. |

The standard flasher relay was a bimetallic device which will vary the flash rate with the voltage, electronic plug in replacements are available which can maintain the flash rate when the voltage drops, the flashers will still be dimmer but at least flash at the right rate. 6V electrics need to be in excellent condition to be in with a chance of working satisfactorily. Mike That electronic unit would work with LED flasher bulbs which use much less power. |

If you have a MT2 fitting spindle, you could get an er25 collet holder which runs up to 16mm shank diameter. That would hold plain shank cutters as well as threaded shank ones. That would allow a much greater range of tooling. Selling the Clarkson would go most, if not all the way to financing an er system. |
