Thread: Lathe spindle bearing selection

If you are sure the M8 SHCS are intended to secure the headstock to the bed, then it would be a good idea to use longer ones, I would not be happy with less than 3 diameters of thread engaged in cast iron. You will likely have to realign the head, but that can come later. Do you have the manual and parts list for the lathe? The FAG bearings will be fine for a hobby machine, all the quality makes exceed their specifications.

I have a Cutwel 13mm/1/2" R8 integral keyless chuck which holds 0.01mm with any size I care to put in it. Just pure luck, the 0.05mm is good for a drill chuck and all the rest of our chucks at the museum come into this range.

Thread: 20 degrees vs 14.5 degrees pressure angle for gears
13/12/2022 21:17:35

In motorcycle gearboxes and any other with trains of different size gears, the numbers of teeth in each pair add up to the same combined count. There is, however an allowance of one tooth which must be because the manufacturers can add or subtract a small ammount and still get good meshing at the same shaft centres.

I was told that molybdenum disulphide chemically changes the surface of steel, lowering its coefficient of friction. Fine with plain bearings, but not so good with rolling elements as the surface can be made brittle by the changes.

Welcome to the forum, Stuart, you are well under way to a great workshop. When the building is done, pay particular attention to insulation, good insulation will slow the rate of temperature change and reduce condensation which is not good for tools and machinery.

Thread: Cold Weather
12/12/2022 19:13:20

Strange thing to happen as the temperature was not very low for most types of machinery. The motor bearings would have similar grease in them. If you are concerned enough to regrease the spindle, use a high melting point lithium grease, not moly grease that is available from Halfords for car wheel bearings.

Thread: Lathe spindle bearing selection

I bought SKF and Timken bearings for the Tom Senior R8 spindle and they are excellent, and I would go for a big name brand such as Toyo, FAG, SKF, Timken, NSK, NTN and similar. As for grease, a quality lithium grease for car wheel bearings from Castrol, Mobil, Carlube, Shell, from any car parts shop.

When packing the headstock, be sure to leave 50% airspace, overpacking will lead to churning and overheating. Not too much preload when adjusting, the headstock should not get over about luke warm after 15 minutes running at speed. Back off the preload slightly and wait for things to cool before retesting if it gets too hot.

Thread: Let's talk about Drill bits, specifically twist drills.
12/12/2022 18:25:14

Having both centre drills and spotting drills and using them in the right context does help greatly with drilling. Amongst my centre drills are a few with 90 degree angles, better for drilling purposes than the common 60 degree ones, I have not yot seen a dead or live centre with a 90 degree end. For precision work, solid carbide drills are better than any hss drill, but most of us can only afford a few and they need careful handling.

Thread: re-use of gas springs

If a custom made strut is needed, I have found the firm who supplied my seat strut exactly the size I wanted.

Thread: Mill table oil grooves.
11/12/2022 18:32:40

A lot depends where the oil can be introduced to the ways, anything will help, though as oil will be dragged along as movement takes place. There are probably as many different ways to do the grooving as there are people doing the grooving and all will help. If you can clamp a guide for the grinder to follow it would give straighter grooves,or just follow a pre marked pattern.

Thread: A very silly question.

The film got bad reviews, but I enjoyed it.

The brain exchange book was probably inspired by Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

Thread: Inserts
11/12/2022 16:44:01

Thanks for the website info, SOD, it would be safer to buy on their ebay shop, probably, then.

I have bought from Lathes UK in the past.

I have seen some small carbide shank boring bars for sale on ebay and they use the size 3 inserts, and failed to find a source of inserts before buying the tool. I had to pay £50 for a box if inserts for the Garant 6mm solid carbide shank boring bar as they are propriety fit, and a similar size. However, the quality is outstanding for any metal which is some consolation.

I have bought from Jenneys Tools via their ebay site several times and can recommend them.

That insecure website that SOD mentioned might simply be non https, and the browser security might be set to warn against it. Try visiting the Lathes UK site, that always get a warning when I visit for that reason.

Thread: re-use of gas springs
11/12/2022 14:50:26

I have some surplace ones, and agree with Peter, that they have potential with assistance with mill heads, if the overall lengths and stroke would match. I have thoughts about the knee of the Tom Senior light vertical which needs the longer handle fitted when the heavy rotary table is fitted. I bought a gas strut for replacing the seat strut on my Suzuki 400 Burgman, and after googling, found a firm which makes custom lengths, strokes, force and end fittings at very reasonable prices. I checked the force on the existing inadequate strut on the bathroom scales using a pad to protect the glass top and added 25% to custom strut power, and it is a great improvement.

Thread: R8 Tooling for Warco Super Major Mill
11/12/2022 14:31:34

We got a full set of R8 metric collets with the drill mill at the museum, and after several years, most of them are unused. They have little or no tolerance for missmatched diameters, I have had to buy 4 imperial ones. It would be best to only get the sizes which match the cutter shank diameters that you intend to use.

With an er collet system, either er25, (up to 16mm) or er32, (up to 20mm), it would be advantageous to have a set especially if you fancy using then on a lathe as well using a Morse Taper adaptor or a collet plate, as a set can cover every size if workpiece.

With sets of er collets, it would be better to get quality ones from Cutwel or APT, they specify the runout tolerance, I have a couple of Chinese sets which leave a lot to be desired in that respect.

Thread: Chinese diesel heater
11/12/2022 14:20:08

A 1Kw electric heater without any external ducting gives off exactly 1Kw of heat, there are no losses, except those which heat up the body of the heater, and they are reclaimed after the power is switched off.. Same with an electric kettle, the heating of the body and the surplace water eventually adds heat to the room, reducing slightly the power needed for heating. The surplace heat is only wasted if the room temperature is naturally high enough to not benefit from that added heat, such as in the summer.

Thread: What am I?

If the thread of the spindle nose could be measured, it would be a valuble clue.

Thread: 5" Bore x 10" Stroke Steam Engine

That flywheel might have been made like that as the engine has only one cylinder and therefor cannot be guaranteed to be self starting.

Thread: Snowdon Mountain Railway

Having the parallel pair of racks with the teeth staggered by 1/2 a pitch and the twin gear wheels underneath the locomotive also offset to match makes a smoother drive
