Thread: Removing gunge

Nylon is very good at solvent resistance, but poor with many acids. When I was in electroplating back in the 60's, everyone wore labcoats made from terelene. They started out white, but soon got dirty. The anode bags for the nickel plating bath were also terelene. Somebody in the management thought we would be smarter wearing nice blue nylon labcoats, so everyone had one. The record for the shortest life of one of the new coats was 3 hours before it fell to bits. My one lasted two days and before day three, we were all back in the old coats. We thought it was hilarious.

I may be wrong, but I have a feeling that the museums compressor might get inspected at 6 monthly intervals. The reciever could be 150L.

You might try an acid like Phosphoric limescale cleaner, or a product such as Viakal. A test on an offcut of the metal would be a good idea first.

I mostly use Kennametal and Kyocera 26 and 32mm blades with 1.6, 2, and 3mm inserts. These are modern industrial tools and as I have mentioned before, both manufacturers state that tool height should be 0.004", 0.1mm above centre if the parting is performed on solid material.

Modern CNC lathes vary their spindle speeds according to the remaining diameter of work during the cut.

A clever design, could have trouble as HSS requires sharpening, perhaps a DCGT 07 for aluminium could be incorporated into the toolholder. Then tool height would not be a factor.

Thread: Boxford needs new motor.
09/06/2020 16:00:49

You will find that 1hp working properly will be a world away from the poor old motor that you have at present.

The 4 pole type are around £82.80 and the 6 pole are around £124.80. That is quite a jump, but with a VFD, it would be worth waiting a few weeks longer to buy the more expensive one.

Thread: Keen beginner

As you are not prejudiced between imperial or metric, you should go for the best machine you can get whichever system it uses. We have two mills, one imperial and the other metric, and the work gets measured to match whichever machine is used.

Thread: Compressor inspection

When I installed the three phase compressor at the museum, I dumped the drain valve and ran a hose inside the building to an easily accessible ball valve, and ran the rest of the hose back outside. The draining is so easy now that it gets done every time the compressor is shut down. The compressor inspector from the insurance company told me that receivers normally fail at a rusty weld and leak without exploding like a high pressure vessel could.

Thread: ER11 collets with 1mm range
09/06/2020 15:31:01

My er11 set also have a 0.5mm range, and because of the small size, I would doubt whether 1mm would be viable. That may be an advantage if they are used to hold milling cutters, as their shanks are normally in 1mm increments, even for intermediate diameters. I would guess that the best fit would be the larger size marked on each collet.

Thread: Mystery TC inserts.
09/06/2020 15:26:31

I've learned something today, that there is a TNMG 11 size insert. I have TCGT 11 and TCMT 11 for a boring bar. That PTGNR type of holder is by far the most difficult to make and would be far beyond the average person. The body is hollow and a rocking clamp is used.

Try typing in "Tom Senior" in the keyword box at the top of the thread, it should reveal a mass of related threads.

Thread: Parting off

I must start using the power cross slide feed when parting off, it would help a lot in keeping the lubrication constant. I already have an ultra stiff rear parting off blade holder and can lock the saddle front and rear as well.

Was the old one fitted at the wrong angle?

When you mentioned hydraulic fluid, my immediate thoughts were " I hope it was not DOT4". wink 2

Thread: Mystery TC inserts.
08/06/2020 21:24:44

Are they single of double sided? Are the sides square, or sloping? A 3-48 UNC screw comes in between 2 and 2.5mm sizes. Those inserts are as old as the hills, all I can say about then is that they are right handed.

Welcome, John, there are lots of experts on M1 mills here, I cannot help, unless you want to know about light verticals. TS uses mostly BSF and Whitworth threads.

Thread: Material for engine block.
08/06/2020 21:07:32

The harder stronger alloys always machine best, using really sharp, honed HSS or the inserts made for aluminium which are also sharp. I use a little AC90 spray and never let the metal get dry.

Thread: Variable timing for a steam oscillating engine?
08/06/2020 21:02:46

I thought somebody would have done it, I had visions of a pair of concentric rings with the ports in them that could be rotated independently over a few degrees. It would be difficult to make such a system work, unless the engine was a fair size, though.

Thread: Arc eurotrade missing from front page ?

I have noticed that also, but I have been looking for something on their site in the last few minutes, and all seems ok.

If anyone is thinking of investing in an indexable system, then have a look at ARC's offering. It is one of the least expensive systems.
