Thread: is there an easy identification test for Nickel and Chromium ? |
26/11/2020 14:17:43 |
I would be surprised if it was chrome plated. Nickel has a slightly off silver colour towards cream or yellow. Chrome would be a cold neutral grey. An alternative called tin-nickel has been used on certain scientific instruments, like nickel in colour but less creamy yellow. Edited By old mart on 26/11/2020 14:20:45 |
Thread: Slot drill hole size? |
26/11/2020 14:06:45 |
That happened to me once. I used a 6mm which cut oversize and another which was much better. The difference was the sharpness, one used and the other new. Solid carbide will cut a better size hole because it is stiffer than steel. For critical size holes, a smaller size first and a reamer to finish as long as the taper at the end of the reamer is taken into account. Thread: Whats the correct size clamp kit for the mini mill? |
26/11/2020 14:02:46 |
I would measure the width of the slots and get the next size down metric set. Standard sizes would be 12,10 and 8 mm. Go for metric as it is easier to add to using easily available studding, nuts and washers. The most useful sets are about 50 piece with a nice stand. |
Thread: "restoring" a Colchester student, anything to consider? |

If you think a coat of paint will do the trick, then go ahead. |
Thread: What am I? |
25/11/2020 17:50:02 |
In the USA, a train driver is an engineer. I was an electroplater (metal finishing technician), an instrument mechanic, a fitter, but never an engineer. Now I'm an OAP, with a bus pass to prove it. Edited By old mart on 25/11/2020 17:57:18 Edited By old mart on 25/11/2020 17:58:41 |
Thread: How to Neutralize Bakers Fluid Flux. |
25/11/2020 16:43:56 |
Rinse in hot water, repeat and the flux should be washed away. |
Thread: Level of qualifications in the UK |
25/11/2020 16:32:24 |
Another possibility is that the overqualified person might be seen as transient and not a long term employee. A better job could turn up at any time. |
Thread: Indexable Chamfer Cutter - too much choice |
24/11/2020 21:03:35 |
I can't post a pic of the adjustable chamfer tool as it is locked up at the museum at the moment. It is a WNT and the single sided positive insert sits in a holder that pivots around the central hole in the insert. SAU also make the same type. Some use triangular inserts, and some square ones. |
24/11/2020 20:36:25 |
I've got one that is adjustable for angle. |
Thread: vfd inverter for Myford |
24/11/2020 16:05:05 |
Anybody can use the VFD for home use without any extra switch gear,or covering, if they want to. I had to at least pay lip service to health and safety with the one I installed at the museum for obvious reasons. |
Thread: Stark no.4 tail stock taper. |
24/11/2020 15:55:17 |
I wonder if there is enough wall thickness in the quill to use a MT2 reamer on? The tailstock would have to be set exactly in line with the axis first. |
Thread: Rotary Table Quest |
24/11/2020 15:49:52 |
With a 6" Soba/Vertex RT, the rear of the table is about 4 1/2" from the axis. This takes up a lot of the throat depth on smaller machines. This size of RT covers the full width of the table of the Tom Senior LV, and is another major factor to consider. |
Thread: Willson 7.5" lathe. New owner |
24/11/2020 15:35:34 |
Thats a shame, a drawing of the spindle end would be helpful. There is a possibility that more than one type of chuck could share the same backplate, so the dimensions of the front of the plate would also be useful. |
Thread: Lathe improvements? |
24/11/2020 15:19:53 |
To match the oversized spindle bore, a chuck would have to be far too big for that little lathe, so the whole exercise is a futile wast of time and money. |
Thread: Left Hand Acme Threads |
24/11/2020 15:08:40 |
I have had exactly this problem with the Tom Senior LV nut for the Xaxis. 5 ACME is not available in smaller than er/ir 22 and tha minimum size that could be threaded internally would be 1" diameter. I got a tap from Tracy Tools, they do left and right handed taps. When I tried the tap in a piece of aluminium, I had doubts whether I could turn it, even though it was a very long taper. I used an ir 8 ACME insert ground so that only the main tip would cut and produced a partial thread with that at 5tpi. A bit of cheating with the compound widened the thread closer to the proper width, but the depth of thread was obviously lacking. This partly cut thread enabled me to complete the thread with the tap in the gunmetal nuts. The backlash was about 0.005", but that didn't matter, as I used two nuts for an antibacklash setup.

That Hoffman is a beauty, but a 10" table is Bridgeport size, just a bit bigger than a 6" one. |
23/11/2020 19:18:25 |
Try googling for rotary tables, I found a very nice second hand Vertex with indexing plates and the tailstock for £280. |
Thread: Willson 7.5" lathe. New owner |
23/11/2020 19:14:10 |
If the lathe uses a L0 fitting spindle, then the backplates are available new. Second hand ones come up on ebay frequently as well. |
Thread: Article on profile tooling for a lathe? |
23/11/2020 18:39:15 |
It might be possible to modify a taper turning attachment fitted to a lathe for copying. At very least, the cross slide leadscrew would have to be disengaged. |
Thread: vfd inverter for Myford |
23/11/2020 18:35:33 |
The Inverter Drive Supermarket quick start guides always stress the importance of shielding. I used shielded wiring for the VFD to motor, the potentiometer and the remote emergency stop switch, and the steel box containing the inverter is earthed, including its door. |
