Thread: Windows for the scrap bin?

...g on my Windows 10 laptop. This, by the way is a good spec fairly new piece of kit.

Q - "why is it so slow starting up, I could have looked at this on my 'phone (Android) staright away".

A - waffle on about complex O/S, technical iffs & buts etc, but no sensible answer that satisfied the query.

. OK I could leave it running 24/7 so it will do background updates...

Are we to assume that the Android phone is left running 24/7 , or do you switch it off after each use?

Hi I am new to machine work have bought a 7x12 lathe CD 210V and need help, I am trying to find out what the original gear set up is for the power feed . Got in a bit of a muddle with the gears.🤔

I have a similar lathe , MV210, and the gears used as standard are A=80, B=33, C=20, D=72 , E=84 and F= spacer.

The diagram on the front of the gearbox cover shows which position is A , B etc.

As mentioned , other ratios are possible but these ratios  are  the gears that came with the lathe.. I have used 3D printed gears successfully

Thread: Cura 4.8
19/01/2021 16:25:14

To further add to Peter's advice,

When you open the printer settings , if you hover your mouse to the right of the "Support" item, you will see the settings icon( like a ships wheel) . Clicking this will allow selection of more Support settings.

If you go to the Marketplace, in the top right of the main screen, you can download some Extensions and Plugins. One I found useful, called Auto Orientation, will arrange your item so that the least support is needed.

I think all these slicer programs are similar but two advantages of Cura are 1), it is very customisable and 2), it is probably the most used so plenty of video tutorials on youtiube

Thread: Retro Computing (on Steroids)

Not as concise as Python but works . ( C#)

palindrom.jpg

On 196 problem , the highest integer before crashing was was 7197636720180367016 , using Int64 and highest value using Int32 is set at 2,147,483,647

I was surprised at the number of integers which became palindrome after only one loop.

'Starting Forth' by Leo Brodie - the classic intro book for learning Forth. Can be found here as a PDF or online version. The illustrations really help to understand stack manipulation in an amusing way.

Starting Forth - Leo Brodie

IanT

I just found my old copy. A bit battered but all there.

startingforth_cover.jpg

Now to see if i can make any sense of it

15/12/2020 12:46:35

Thanks, Dave, Ian, Michael, John for the information and links to Forth.

It was the "Retro Computing

" title that got me thinking about Forth. I had a Jupiter Ace and I also had Forth on a HP 85 Computer. I enjoyed playing around with it but at that time the need was for large data programs and Pascal took up most of my time. I can't pretend to have ever coded any serious application but I still have the 'Starting Forth' book.

Now that I am retired , I want to play around with Arduino and motor control with a view to CNC at some time. Forth just seemed ideal, given it was developed to control large astrological Telescopes . It was also very memory efficient. I know the HP computer came with 16K memory, 2.2Mb 8" disks (which were considered huge at the time)and memory was always an issue with every program.

I wil check out the links and hopefully get started somehow.

Thanks

PS. Still have the HP computer - it was dumped and I literally rescued it from a skip. Not sure what happened to the Ace

15/12/2020 09:38:37

Sorry if it a bit off topic, but i haven't seen any mention of Forth.

I remember a small computer, similar in every way, except colour, to the Sinclair. I think it was called the Jupiter Ace.

My reason for mentioning is that it would seem an ideal language for CNC etc and for a lot of what we do in workshop.

Just wonder if anyone here uses it or has any up to date information?

Thread: Looking for an Illustrator type program?
05/11/2020 09:57:35

Affinity Designer might suit. it is a direct competitor to Illustrator.

It is not free but it a single purchase. i have it for about 5 years and all regular upgrades since have been free of charge.

However, it might be overkill if all you want in a simple text editor

Occasionally, Serif, who own Affinity, have special offers,

“Our head wood guy told me ash didn’t even really have a market or use until American baseball bats and electric guitars, because of Fender.

Funny, I always thought coach built car bodies were built on an ash frame.

Phil

You are correct. I assume that the European Ash is different to the Green Ash referred to in the article. Its' elasticity meant it was very suitable for tool handles, bows, cues, support for weaved baskets etc. It was , and probably still is , used for car bodies and for early aircraft frames.

An important use of European ash is for Hurleys.

No problem Jason, not trying to blame you.

I was only posting here because the only email i received from subcription site says "Please try to avoid emailing us again unless it’s regarding a new issue as this may cause further delays".

There is no problem or urgency, I will try again next week if it is not resolved in the meantime.

Jason, Thanks for your time

Have you looked at your account here (very top of page "your account" ) or if you have not set one up then do so using the same e-mail address you used when taking out the subscription and it should show your subs number which can then be entered onto the forum for digital access.

Also check your spam folder as the confirmation e-mail with subs number may have gone there.

As you said in your first reply to me, the system only shows the expired print edition.

Perhaps best to cancel and refund me if you cannot fix it

Try entering your new subscription number rather than leaving the old one there.

I have no new subscription number. That is the problem,

Gerard at the moment you are showing as having a Print only subscription to MEW, if you have only upgraded to digital in the last 24hrs it may take a day or two to become active.

I know i am showing as having an (expired) print only subscription. But I have paid for a digital subscription and it is not showing up. I have emailed to [email protected] but only received a generic reply with , strangely, a warning not to email again! So there is nowhere I can raise it other than here on the forum.

Any help would be appreciated

.... you can use a tablet or PC or even a large screen smart TV .....

Jason, I have tried to take out a Digitial subscription bit the website says only for IOS and Android. Can you clarify if it is available for Windows 10.

Thanks

G

Hi Gerard,

The pocketmags app works with W8.2 and W10:

www.model-engineer.co.uk/editorial/page.asp?p=1334

"PC For Windows 8.2 and Windows 10 follow the steps as for Mac. Please note Pocketmags reader does not work on earlier versions of Windows."

You can also access pocketmags subscriptions through their web interface, but this doesn't allow downloading of copies for offline reading.

Neil

Thanks Neil, Jason

I will download asap

Lord Rosse discovered the spiral structure of some galaxies with it.

If you look immediately north of the telescope you can see a hedge planted in a spiral to commemorate it. The castle still has a museum which also covers photography, by and the invention of the turbine
