Thread: Link to Arc and Chronos sites errors
04/07/2021 09:19:04

Wasn't sure where to post this but the adverts links to the ARC and Chronos sites are generating an error when using Firefox browser.

The issue appears to be with a secure connection with the ad server servedbyadbutler.com.

Firefox detected a potential security threat and did not continue to servedbyadbutler.com. If you visit this site, attackers could try to steal information like your passwords, emails, or credit card details.

What can you do about it?

The issue is most likely with the web site, and there is nothing you can do to resolve it.

If you are on a corporate network or using anti-virus software, you can reach out to the support teams for assistance. You can also notify the web site’s administrator about the problem.

Thread: Model Engineer's Auction

I emailed them back and suggested that they change the information page for this auction because it says VAT is payable on the hammer price.

I have just had a reply to say they have changed it.

Stuart

I had just done the same! wink

Paul L, Please check this because I could be way off the mark, but I understand what you are saying is correct in normal circumstances if the sale goods have a commercial origin. My understanding is that if the sale item has originated from a private source or education then VAT is only payable on the buyers premium.

I am only stating this as I am located not too far from the auction house and, although nearly twenty years ago now, I used to go regularly to the sales and I bid for several machines and tooling there. To the best of my recollection I did not pay VAT on the hammer price for a Boxford shaper and a Harrison miller because they had originated in education, but VAT was levied on the buyers commission. I can recall paying VAT on the total net price for some tooling I bought out of industry.

I could be wrong and my memory is playing tricks on me, but that is my understanding until I am corrected. I am certain for anyone that is interested in bidding, a quick phone call to the auctioneers should clear up any mis-understanding.

This is my understanding.

Normally when I bid and win, I pay the hammer price plus buyer premium+vat. there is not usually VAT on the hammer price.

That is what made me post as this appears to have VAT on the whole amount.

It looks to me as the successful bidders will pay the hammer price plus buyers premium plus vat on the whole amount.

so the myford lathe at £1200 would cost £1656. anyone else read it that way?

Hi Paul L I have sent you a pm

Just a quick 'thank you' to Kevin for his assistance with the drawing and advice. Much appreciated.

regards Paul

Hi Kevin,

If you are going to adjust the z axis gib strip, any chance you could pop the top adjuster out and make a drawing for me. mine is missing and id like to make a replacement.

Thread: Can you recommend a UK supplier for good quality "mill board"?
04/06/2021 12:43:14
Posted by SillyOldDuffer on 04/06/2021 10:37:57:

I think John may have to experiment to find exactly what he wants. 'Millboard' isn't a particular material, rather it's a generic name for a finishing, trimming or cladding product that can be made in different ways from different materials. A quick search found Millboard made of selected oak, 'wood free Millboard', Millboard made of recycled materials, and Millboard containing polyurethane, which John might consider toxic.

Whether or not an individual Millboard is 'good quality' when used for an off-piste purpose like modelling is anybody's guess. It would help to know much more about John's application, for example we only know it has to be 'strong stuff', which is meaningless in engineering terms. Does it have to bend round a particular radius, be hard or tough, resist tension, or tearing, or whatever? Does it matter if the material is brittle, or isn't waterproof? Etc, etc. John mentions millboard is recyclable: is that a requirement or an observation?

In engineering it's best to defer deciding what the solution is for as long as possible; that is don't start by deciding the answer, and work back from that. (In this case 'good quality Millboard, what Brand should I buy', when perhaps the answer is tinplate, fibreglass, or vacuum formed plastic.) Better to clearly identify the requirement, identify options that meet it, and only then chose one. At the moment only John knows what he has in mind, and why one product would be more suitable than another. For example, what is it exactly about the Limehouse Mills product that makes it's specification more suitable than other millboards?

Dave

Why do I get the feeling that whatever is suggested will not be suitable?

When you click the 'remember me' box you get a cookie set that 'maintains state' so your credentials are maintained. You probably have set the browser to, clear history, delete cookies or use private mode so then the cookie gets deleted when the browser closes and you have to log in again. (not such a bad thing in my opinion)

I would also echo what Jack says above

Thread: 10TB HDD

Do you actually have 10Tb of data?

The larger drives have much higher data density rate, lower flying heads and run error correction continuously.

I would advise a Raid Array of five 2Tb in a NAS device if storage and redundancy is your primary concern.

Thread: JD Metals

I see that JD have an advert on the site but there web site has no company details (Registered address etc). I like to know who I'm doing business with and this all seems a bit fishy.

The previous incarnation of this company

JD Multi Metals, Unit 16, Newhall Industrial Estate, Sheffield, S9 2TW
Registered in England: Partnership No OC414358

was ' dissolved via compulsory strike-off'

Thread: Spy Pixels in Emails

Paul - look at the HTML code - they attempt to plant a pixel if they find Javascript turned off - blatant attempt to track those who block other methods

Ok so what would this pixel tell them? planting a pixel = inserting an image.

What the html code is doing is starting 'Facebook Tracking Pixel' (either with or without javascript)

Essentially, the Facebook Tracking Pixel is an analytics tool, a piece of code designed to be placed within a website in order to track users as they use a site with pixel enabled. As detailed by Facebook on their pixel site, the tool is triggered when someone visits a website and performs an action on that site. The pixel automatically reports the action, letting the site owner know that someone used their site after seeing an advertisement on Facebook.

The tracking pixel also allows for the customer to be reached again using a custom audience tool when setting up a new advertising campaign. In theory, the pixel is one of the many ways that Facebook allows advertisers of all sizes to get better at delivering ads to people who are more likely to click on the ad. The consumer benefits by seeing ads targeted to their interests though at the cost of some privacy online.

You can defeat this easily by configuring your browser. Firefox is specifically geared to help protect you from tracking. especially if you install the ublock origin, and duckduck go privacy extensions.

Paul

This is an old method of seeing if an email has been opened / read.

A picture 1 x 1 pixel is linked in the email with a specific name eg 'Paull.jpg'. when the email is opened the picture is requested from the senders server, so if the sender monitors the requests then they can see that Paul L opened the email. Its a very crude way of tracking and easily overcome by setting ' do not download pictures' in your email client.

@ Frances, the owners of this site do not need to 'attempt to place a tracking pixel from facebook' on this site as there is a facebook icon, bottom right of the page, that, unless 3rd party cookies are disabled in your browser links directly back to facebook, same for twitter and pintrest.

Third party cookies are the primary way you are tracked around the internet and 3rd party adverts are one of the biggest infection vectors for malware. Apple has never allowed 3rd party cookies on there products, Google has indicated that they will also ban 3rd party cookies in the future.

There are other ways to track people such as Super Cookies and also Browser Fingerprinting but these can also be managed.

Clicking on link in emails is a serious problem and should be discouraged as should opening attachments.

To clarify, did you mount the z axis scale to the cover or through the cover to the column?

There are a lot of solutions af varying types to meet your particular circumstances. If you use the forum search feature on the front page of the website with a few suitable words you will find loads of suggestions and can take your pick. Never a one stop shop.

Baz,

I'm aware that there are various types but it was there effectiveness compared to wiping over with oil that I was interested in hearing about. I did try the the search function using various terms relating to my interest but nothing was found.

Paul it all depends on the conditions in your workshop, and outside. I have a good amount of bare cast iron in my workshop and I don't use any surface protection at all becuse the temperature remains fairly stable. If I had an uninsulated roof I expect that I would be in a constant battle with rust.

Pete,

I don't really have any rust issues as i regularly wipe everything over with oil. what i was interested to hear was if the new solutions a better option or just 'snake oil'.

Thread: Sieg SX3 Machine DRO install
29/01/2021 12:39:33

Hello Martyn,

I'm considering fitting a DRO to my SX3 at the moment but deciding where to buy from is not so easy. What size scales did you go for for each axis? Where did you purchase your kit from?

I see you added a scale to the z axis also, I was undecided as to where I needed this but on balance I think I do. I'm also in the market for the extended table if ARC ever get one back in stock!

What do you use to protect the machine guideways, tooling etc in your workshops?

Is just a light coating of oil sufficient or are the more modern solutions (e.g. MetalGuard Ultra) the preferred way to go.
