Thread: Where to buy small quantities of 316 steel 60mm (2 3/8 inch) diameter |

Try M Machine Metals. They don’t list those exact sizes but would probably be able to machine them from the next larger and they supply by the inch. Very good service too. Edited By Frank Gorse on 08/07/2022 10:51:24 |
Thread: Moving v belts on pulleys ? |
19/06/2022 16:31:51 |
Wrap a strip of cloth,as many thicknesses as necessary, round the belt and use this as a handle to ease the belt over the edge of the pulley. Easier to do than to describe, this was shown to me by a proper engineer during my very brief career in engineering. |

If you don’t like jargon then imagine your doctors talking about your case using only language that the man in the street would understand. Or the pilot on your next holiday flight talking to Air Traffic Control.

Fair enough, looks like we can’t blame the Americans for this one! |
28/04/2022 22:40:23 |
I had also assumed that ‘shop’ ,meaning workshop, was just another of the Americanisms we were stuck with but in Stanley Holloway’s ‘Three ha’pence a foot’ Sam Oswaldthwaite followed his trade ‘in a shop on the banks of the Irwell’ and that dates back to 1932 at least. Also relevant to present fears of rising sea levels! |

Just followed the link to the FFF system, wonderful stuff. Can anybody tell me how to recalibrate my DRO to read in nanofurlongs? |

Not so Duncan. You measure the distance in any direction on the chart then simply take the dividers to the latitude scale on the chart. According to Google the Nautical Mile is currently used by all countries for air and sea navigation. Edited By Frank Gorse on 11/04/2022 13:34:33 |

The cable is one tenth of a nautical mile so should be decimal enough for most people. The nautical mile is one of the few units that has a sensible derivation,it’s the length of a minute of latitude plotted on a standard navigational chart so distances can be measured with the simplest equipment, dividers. Not so with kilometres. Fathoms haven’t been used here for many years but are still in use in the USA. If you want to tell the Americans they’ve got to stop using all these archaic units, good luck! Wars have been started over less. |

The US quart is 0.95 litres so that may account for the measurements in the saucepan. But,yes,it’s all a mess. (Sent before I’d seen Nicholas’s post, above) Edited By Frank Gorse on 08/04/2022 22:40:09 |

Jim, the website you provide a link to is dated January this year. According to ‘Boilerjuice’ website the price of oil at that time was around 62p and recently peaked at about £1.60something. It’s wild fluctuations like that which are the problem. |

I too am surprised to read that “at the moment oil is a cheap way of heating a home”- please can you quote your sources of information(and of oil). |

Signed that, thanks for pointing it out. |

If it wasn’t for free speech we wouldn’t know who the idiots were. There are only 10 kinds of people, those who understand binary and those who don’t. |

I’d suggest ‘Lathes.co.uk’ website. Modest one-off fee, realistic assessment of what to ask, very professional looking advert and lots of viewers. Bought two machines from it myself. Edited By Frank Gorse on 24/02/2022 22:27:05 |

Thread: M E Beam engine |

Looks very nice. I’m building this engine too and am increasingly inclined to fabricate parts rather than use castings. Two questions:did you bend the bar for the entablature cold or hot? You’d have to be quick to get it into the jig before it cooled so I’m guessing cold. And please can you tell me where to find the article by David Haythornthwaite,I’ve looked on his website without success and i could use all the help I can get! Definitely going with the 12 studs anyway.

I had to order some electrical bits from them for my Wabeco milling machine. Didn’t find them the best firm to deal with, the parts took weeks to come from Germany (perhaps that’s just the present situation) but at least I got them. They don’t even keep a set of brushes-universal for the Wabeco range-in stock here.

Crikey,at £2/mm what are you cutting.? If it’s that expensive silver solder or epoxy the stub onto a piece of bar and hold that in the vice. Blades are about £30 for 3 from Tuffsaws and they’re excellent quality but I see they’re not taking any orders at present as they’re too busy! |

Michael, I’m not a Welsh speaker but I know that there is no letter ‘k’ in Welsh,so it would have to be ‘llocnut’. Or of course you could simply use Lloctite instead.
