Thread: A trip to the scrap yard |
17/07/2023 21:43:17 |
Some interesting stuff there, I remember scrap yards decades ago where we used to look for parts for our cars, some had 6 or more scrappers piled on top of each other and we used to have to climb up to get at the bits we wanted, Sometimes the whole stack used to keep shifting and creaking. My son went to a big scrap yard to be told that no members of the public were allowed on the wrecks anymore due to health and safety and you had to tell them what you wanted which was hopeless. |

then again I’ve had a cheap clock on the wall in my back garden out in all weather change the battery once a year and it’s still going after 4 years Steve
--------------------------- Batteries vary wildly and there are loads of cheap junk ones using well known names such as Hyundai, Panasonic etc. How about this for a long lasting battery, I have my dads wristwatch, a Timex Indiglo, he died 7 years ago and the watch is still going on the same battery, I've no idea when he last changed it so the battery could be 9 or 10 years old, the watch keeps perfect time year after year as well as I don't wear it so never alter the summer/ winter hour

I've worked out that mine, pictured above is probably 25+ years old, it fell off the wall when re-arranging my shed a few years ago and hence the crude masking tape and wood strips repair, the current battery is a Panasonic |

I'm a bit baffled by the problem Iain is having with clocks, mine has had the same single AA battery for 2 years or more and it's still going, in fact I didn't bother altering it in the Autumn when we put back the hour so it came right again in the Spring Edited By vic newey on 06/07/2023 12:11:34 |
Thread: recent offer of magazines for £5 |

I don't think it is now, I had the 3 issues but I found it was not for me although I keep getting letters asking me to subscribe. I am more interested in the machinery and tools rather than making steam engines etc so I find the forum here far more interesting. I found issues from way back in the 1930 - 40's era have far more varied subjects compared to today. |

Brazing will ruin it, just glue it |

A simple repair; that would not ruin the patina as would any form heat with soldering/brazing etc; is cyanoacrylate superglue. |
Thread: At It Again - But New Twist? (Scammers) |

My wife had one on Friday from an old lady she knows in the WI, she asked if we used Amazon, my wife said yes and then the lady asked if she could buy her a $200 gift voucher as her computer would not work properly. My wife said " who is going to America? and the reply came back " don't know yet" I told the wife to do nothing as it was very suspicious, and I checked the email was not masked but it was the ladies proper email. On Saturday an email came from the local WI president saying to be aware of an Amazon scam and that the old lady had confirmed she had no idea what was going on with her email. |

If the thieves big loop not only opens and starts the car it must also continue to transmit as they drive away or otherwise the car would start beeping etc as does my Toyota if I walk away with the engine running |

My old Emco miller gets collet and drill chucks stuck quite often, I use a thin rod that fits inside the internal drawbar thread on my machine, then tapping it with a hammer cannot damage the thread as possibly would hitting the drawbar directly |

There are errors on that website for sure, I know the section on Pittler lathes contains a few. |

How interesting this is - thanks so much for posting your page. That's fascinating that they had so many Holborn addresses. The lathe I have bought just says High Holborn. "In addition the accessories also confirm such a connection, being constructed identically and so directly interchangeable with the Wolf Jahn originals. " I wonder which lathe accessories they are saying are compatable? Looking at the Wolf Jahn page I cannot really see any lathes that would be compatable (apart from one white one) as they all have beveled beds. James ---------------------- The catalogue also shows an 1/1/2" lathe which is exactly like a watchmakers lathe, it takes 6mm Wolf Jahn collets |

Thread: George Adams 2 1/2" Precision |

The closing down sale was following the death of George Adams. In the early part of the 20th century he was the sole agent for German Pittler lathes and a close personal friend of von Pittler who founded the company. Although lots of G.Adams lathes are still around there is no evidence of where they were actually made. I have discovered 5 different retail shop addresses in the same area of High Holborn in London but nowhere is listed as factory premises. A lot of tool retailers added their own badge to imported tools back then. Here is a link to a page of my website showing different addresses on various adverts and catalogues of George Adams. |

I'm glad it was of interest, here is another page, the catalogue dates from the 1930's |

I have an original G.Adams catalogue which shows 2 1/2"lathes which may be of interest Edited By vic newey on 18/05/2023 21:18:07 |
Thread: Anybody like weird plants? |
12/05/2023 20:38:59 |
Dave, you sure do have some strange cats! over the years we have had quite a few cats but always rescued moggies rather than pedigree or rare breeds, Our neighbour has a Bengal and two others that sometimes comes round, when they go on holiday we feed them but we have never heard of them eating anything weird. Aluminium caused a minor infection on my leg, I was out walking and something was constantly sticking in the side of my leg below the knee, I searched, shook my leg etc but could find nothing and by the time I got home there was a big purple blotch. I removed my trousers and finally found a tiny coiled up piece of aluminium swarf embedded in the material, I think your vet was wrong to presume aluminium was soft as it clearly caused damage to my leg, the mark is still partly visible after 6 weeks so please be careful of your cat eating it |

Word of warning, beautiful as they are and some of the plants shown can be stunning, if you have cats then please be aware that all lilies and the exotics featured are highly poisonous to cats and can cause death. I have four cats, one an Abyssinian will eat any plant so we are very careful what plants we have around, he even goes into the garden and eats daffodils when they are in season, needless to say they are on the list of poisonous garden plants, he usually proceeds to vomit the consumed plants which I suppose is his body’s way of countering the poisons he has ingested. So far his diet has not proved terminal. Dave W ---------------------------------------- I'm not sure if you are referring to my Arisaemas? which although are called cobra Lillies but are not related to the Lilly family in any way. In some parts of the world the tubers are cooked and eaten Apart from that, you clearly have an unusual cat because that's not normal behaviour is it so issuing dire warnings is a bit unfair, Our cats occasionally eat grass as do most cats but I've not seen them eat anything else.

Speedy builder 5 your morph is very similar to dragon arum which seem to grow like weeds in my garden and when flowering they stink to high heaven . ---------------------- I have four of the Dracunculus Vulgaris plants in the greenhouse and due to open the flower in a couple of days, unlike the Amorphophalus they are very hardy outdoors |
