Thread: countershaft bearing replacement
01/09/2019 15:42:51

Thank you Ian,

yes that puts a doubter on a ring bearing unless a I can find a lower profile type, i don't want to risk trying to alter the casting apertures either so still considering what to do.

here is a pic of the actual castingbracket2.jpg

Hello Bazyle,

no the lathe itself is a Pittler from 1898 and I have no idea whether the c/shaft is original, it has V belts but could still be the original cast bracket & shaft bearings

Thank you Clive & Ian T

I think I would probably be better off making a roller bearing holder to fit in the casting aperture, this way I won't risk botching up the original one trying to bore it out for a bush.

The shaft is not scored where it passes through the bearing. The left hand side of the shaft runs on 4" past the bearing as there are two pulleys inc one for the overhead c/shaft, this is where the wear is most noticeable.

7/8" ring bearings are easily available so I'll look into it

bearing.jpgThe bearings on my vintage lathe countershaft have become noisy. I would think many lathes had this type of plain iron bearing but now there is a bit of play, This is worse at the end where the pull of the motor adds more pressure.

The spindle appears to be imperial 7/8" , I am thinking of perhaps using roller bearings if i can find a way to fit them.

The casting has inch & a half holes where the bearing fits and screw/nuts to centre it.

Has anyone replaced bearings in a similar casting to mine? and if so how did you do it?

Thread: Closing down sale ,1930's tool catalogue
13/08/2019 20:48:19

Hello Stephen,

unfortunately neither is mentioned, possibly because they were no longer available in the 1930's or G.Adams had no stock at the closing date

That type of rotating carriage is very similar to the round bed Drummond, without doubt both are copied from the Pittler. i wish my Pittler had the option of a T slot table although it must be somewhat restricted in that it cannot move it two directions as would a cross-slide version ?

Glad it was of use, I don't have a George Adams lathe but have a German Pittler which was probably sold via George Adams as UK agents.

Looking at those prices you have to take into account many workers were paid equal to £135 per year for a 50 hour week!

I remember my Grandad in 1951 only had electric light but no wall sockets, any electric items inc the wireless were plugged in there so many home engineers would use a treadle

page2.jpgpage.jpgI recently obtained a fascinating catalogue of George Adams, one of the biggest retailers of lathes & tools for several decades.

60 pages full of all kinds of tools, lathes, and everything in between, as well as producing G.A lathes ( has anyone got one?) they were agents for Von Pittler earlier in the centuryg adams.jpg

photo5.jpgtesting the taper attachments bit of ageingI've finally got around to making a taper turning attachment for my B8, I also had to make the slotted extension to the cross-slide as the original was broken off some time in the past and it always bugged me. I did intend to make it as near to an original as possible, seeing from photo's that the main bracket & top plate are all cast as one piece made that a step too far so the bracket & top plate were made separate.

It's complete enough to actually use it now, I just need to devise a way to add a graduation scale.
I did a test run on a 1" bar and it works perfectly, the sliding block that connects to the slot has an adjustment gib & two screws, there is no play whatsoever so seeing it now looking like it actually belongs is very satisfying!Ready to test!

Thread: Inspection guage, what is it for?
29/07/2019 17:23:02

Yes, you are correct, these are quite expensive according to the info I got elsewhere

29/07/2019 16:31:52

90+ views so far and nobody identified it? a few clues, quite a few of you would use it, it measures clearance of something that many of you might use in your workshop

29/07/2019 14:50:04

I got this Starrett inspection tool decades ago from somewhere I can't recall, I never did find out what it was for and it's remained in a tool drawer ever since

I finally found out yesterday but I wonder how many of you will spot it straight away!inspection.jpg

I have only ever owned one, it's an Emco Mentor 4 speed geared head. I bought it in the 1980's originating from a school workshop.

http://www.lathes.co.uk/pittler/index.html is a good start.

Not really, it does not give measurements other than distance between centres
