Thread: Lathe tool recommendations? |

Tbh, I don't mind throwing a bit of money at a half decent bench grinder. I've had a couple of cheap ones and I found the torque drop incredibly irritating. |

I didn't know that about the brazed carbides either so that's useful intel, thanks! The main issue here is that I was spoiled in my only machining job, in that we had an old boy who's sole purpose in life was spending his days grinding the absolute most perfect tools for any particular job, often even with subtle differences for each individual machine. The guy was a bloody savant! The flip side being, I simply never learned this most fundamental trade skill. So basically I'm after a half decent set of pre-grounds to check my work against on the decent amount of HSS blanks I inherited. Obviously going to have to get to know the Logan properly and work out any intricacies it prefers. Thanks for all the input folks! |

I suspect the Logan won't allow the best to be got from carbide I actually hadn't considered that, that's a very good shout thanks! Although I will want a new set for my CJ18 at some point. |

I'd buy or make a tangential tool holder. It will do 90% of your work and is dead easy to sharpen. Always in the market for a new YouTube rabbit hole, cheers! Edited By UncouthJ on 06/07/2022 15:30:21 |

Beautiful old machine, flat belts and all. Save yourself a LOT of mess and instead of nasty black graphite grease on the gears, go modern with spray-can clear teflon motorcycle chain lube. OOOOH! I didn't think of that! Ok, that'll be the go-to for the main gear train, but I'm going to stick with graphite for the QCGB... |

Hi folks. I'm in the market for some new tooling. What's the best value sets available and where from? I'm looking for a set of pre-ground HSS and a set of carbides. Preferably including boring and basic thread cutters... Thanks |

You are a brave man saying that about Chinese machines on here, can’t say that I disagree with you though.
Oh it's ok, I've got one too, so I'm allowed! Two words... BACK GEAR! *Mic drop. LOL

Thought I'd document my lathe strip & rebuild, as there's not much about these on here. Got an absolute steal on this beautiful piece of history, it should have gone for twice what I paid! Unfortunately it's been used in a combined metal & wood shop for a few years, and not protected from the latter work. Needless to say... The crud is strong with this one! Though it was previously owned for decades by a BAE engineer, so I'm confident it's been well cared for most of its life at least. Fortunately with machines of this era, it'll still be going strong when all the modern Chinese machines have crumbled to dust! After a hearty bit of TLC anyway... Going with meths for most of the cleaning. Diesel/kero was suggested, but with fuel prices being what they are, may as well suggest Myrrh! Finishing up with lashings of brake cleaner. For fluids, the manual has suggested SAE 10 (ISO 32) ways oil, so I've opted for that over the more common 68. Now I know MrPete likes oil for the gears, but I'm sticking with the manual and going with graphite grease. Think that's all for now... I'm further along with the job when I thought to start writing this but this is definitely enough for the first bit! J.

Thread: Single phase milling machine recommendations |
27/06/2022 21:48:11 |
Sorry I've not replied to now, the 'answer in the email' feature seems to not be working for me for some reason. To be investigated. Anyhoo... Reason for looking at 1ph is that the sparky who fitted the house RCD, and I spoke to about wiring up the workshop I'm setting up in the garage, said something about being too far from the supply to be able to put 3ph in there. Did find it weird as the largest sub station in the area by far is over the fence at the end of the street. But my knowledge of the electrical grid is less than rudimentary even so I took his word for it. If the vfd or rotary convertor are things to discuss with him or someone further then I'll do that. I know 3ph is superior, I understand far more about electricity in use so to speak, it's the 'getting it to and out of the wall' aspect I've not really looked into. I now realise I have some YouTube'ing to do LOL. J |

Hi folks. So I'm an old tools kinda guy... I have a wonderful 1941 Logan 700 lathe and a beautiful 1975 Sherry & son compressor. I'd really like to maintain this theme with my choice of milling machine, but struggling to find anything in 1ph. Is newer tech the only way? I'm guessing it's owing to the higher speeds involved with milling? I just find the older tech so much more rigid and easy to maintain. I have got my eye on a Warco WM250 that's had full CNC modification, should I just set my course that way and give up a fools errand in this instance? Any thoughts and advice greatly appreciated! J |

Hi folks. Resurrecting an old thread again. I'm interested in sourcing drawings for JH's Suffolk dredging tractor. I was particularly looking for his modified Yorkshire boiler, but having seen the little tractor I've fallen somewhat in love! Anyone able to point me in the right direction please? Any assistance greatly appreciated... J Edit: ignore my ignorance. Just noticed the comment about them being available from sarik.

Thread: Engine scale |
12/06/2022 23:10:58 |
Thanks Paul, that's great advice. I had the same thought re larger engines and items. I've bought some books and plans for scrap wobblers and stationary engines etc to get me started. The TE is definitely a long term goal. Besides it's going to be long term before a decent mill is on the cards for me. I'm currently very limited on space, so vertical milling is my only option for the time being, but that's why I went for the Logan, it's the only thing in my price bracket with power cross feed. I've had a difficult few years, so I'm just excited to get started. |

Thanks Mark, that's a good shout. I'm going to work my way up, but interested to see where my ceiling will be. Just want to be able to drive around the steam rally LOL. |

Hi folks. Anyone willing to share the manual / parts list for the Logan 10" (Wards 700) lathe, before I fork out for it? Thanks. J

Hi folks. I've just hit the jackpot and scored a Logan 10x24 late. My long term goal is model traction engines. What scale plans should I be looking toward for this size machine? Thanks. J |

Thanks for that Howard. From a few labelling plates I've found in the tool chest, I think the guy actually made measuring instruments of some description. So that would all fit... His wife seems quite determined to throw everything in the filing cabinets away but I think I'm going to make a point of asking for a look-see! |

Another nice find. Unfortunately I've no key for the lock, but was able to pick it open thanks to my other hobby 😉 Sorry admin, I can't figure out how to turn them myself so I'll have to keep you busy 🤷 |

Thanks ever so much guys. The more mundane items, not listed in this thread I've just uploaded ready to put up on the classifieds. If anyone can think of any more appropriate forums to list the more specialised gear, or can think of anyone who might be interested in any of it, please feel free to tag them or pm me for contact details. Thanks again Jay
