Thread: Its nearly there !

All back together now after rubbing back down and spraying the few bits that I had hand painted. Really pleased with how it turned out. Just waiting on an NVR switch to turn up and I can finally get the motor installed and get it up and running.

Thread: Cap head screws

Buy your Capscrews from a proper engineering supplier. "supermarket" hardware can be low strength. Unbrako is good quality. (Ditto for Allen keys, I still use the Unbrako Allen keys bought in 1958 when I was was an Apprentice )

The steel in the D I Y screws and keys can be soft and more trouble that they are worth. You tend to find this out when you need to remove a tight screw!

Hi Howard thanks for the reply, I'm in Deal, Kent

Hi Ron, just for general use really. I think as a couple have suggested I will start by buying a few more of what's needed at the time and build up an assortment that way.

Hi all, I expect most of you who have been at this a while have a good selection of cap head screws to hand but as a beginner to all this, is it worth buying a mixed selection box of them to start me off. I am going to have a go at the little Wig Wag engine by Ade Swash, or should I just buy what's needed as I need them?

recommendation's please.

Hi Duncan, yes I have considered three phase with a VFD but the motor that came with it was running fine when I tested it and will do to get me started. I do appreciate that three phase and its benefits would be the way to go when this one packs up though and it will be on the cards at some point. I just want to get going and use the lathe even if its a simple thing like a handle for the old drum switch laugh

Here is the drum switch, i have stripped cleaned and painted it, its a type A Dewhurst switch and it appears to be threaded where the handle fits. Does anyone know how to measure this thread?

A leadscrew clutch is on my list of things to do as I have some drawings to follow, as is a handwheel dial, the first job is a new handle for the original drum switch, although I won't be using it. Thought it might be a nice beginner project to get something turned to size and to try and cut a thread.

Finally, got the lathe back together and I'm really pleased with it although I am so tempted to strip it again and spray the bed, tailstock and headstock as I have the covers as its a much better finish. Trouble is I want to start using it. Just waiting on new switch gear and should be able to get it up and running.20190317_141645.jpg

Thread: ML10 heastock spindle
10/03/2019 14:46:00

Hi all,

I'm making some progress now with putting the lathe back together, today I have refitted the Spindle as per the manual instructions complete with a new belt. However, I don't know if I'm missing something but it doesn't seem right. In the photo below you can see a gap (marked with arrow no 1) now if I leave this gap as shown I have no side to side movement in the V pulleys. and everything is nice and snug with no backlash, however when the back gear is fitted it rubs on the bull wheel.

If I move the bull wheel further over to decrease the gap the back gear fits with no rubbing on the bull wheel but there is some side to side movement in the V pully ( arrow 2) and the thrust washers and bearing are floating about. Is this correct ?

I'm in Deal, Kent. normaly order stuff from ebay suppliers but the BSF stuff seems expensive or is it just me being a cheapskate ?

Thread: ML10 Hammered Paint
19/02/2019 15:30:25

Hi,

I've just bitten the bullet and ordered some of the Dark Grey Coo-Var Hammercote. Next day service saw it arrive today and I'm quite pleased with the match. Please see the photo of my headstock casting below. I thought it best to paint a bit in a not too visible location to try it out. The red circled area is the new paint and if anything is a little darker than the original but that could be that the original paint has lightened up a bit over the years.

Thread: Modern equivellent idea's please
16/02/2019 23:42:05

Thanks for the input on this, I did think about going with a three phase motor but it seems to be quite expensive. The motor I have is serviceable so if I can use it I would like to use it. If it fails then I will change it out and possibly go with a 3 phase. This electrickery stuff is all chinese to me though I can just abut wire a plug, this is all a big learning curve.

15/02/2019 14:58:49

Thanks for the replies, it gives me an idea as to what im looking for, got the resilient mounts off and I was right they are silicone based surpriseand completely knackered.

20190214_174252.jpg

Got the ends of the motor cleaned up though so I can now see what's needed

20190214_174908.jpg

Don't hold out much hope of finding new ones though, I've already tried 1 company Remco and they only do a six sided rubber the ones I need have 9 sides ! however they did offer to send me a pair of what they had at postage cost only, which I thought was very good of them.

14/02/2019 14:13:51
That would be nice yes.
14/02/2019 12:39:54

Hi looking to give the motor a good clean up, looks rough but runs smooth. The mounting rubbers have been topped up with what looks like silicone and will need changing but what I would like is some idea's as to what to substitute the on /off switch and drum switch with, something simple please I'm no electrician!
