Not sure that you need much more speed for screw cutting ??indecision

not for screw cutting no but for turning

Welcome Adrian. My first lathe was also an 'M' type Drummond and I had many happy hours on that making things.

You will find information about your lathe here;

Brian

Thank you for that link Brian and that traction engine you have in the picture looks amazing!

Hi Adrian I have an M type lathe like you although i have done a few mods to mine like just pluging the first jole in the bed to prevent small parts disappearing to fitting a quick changed toolpost. It's worth having a look in my photos to see results and ideas.

HI David, i really like the look of your M type so I'm sure i will be asking you some questions as i can already see a few modifications I would like to make to mine.. That plug is a really good idea and one i will do this weekend..
I bought a copy of Model Engineers workshop last month because it had plans to make tool holders, that could well be my first project and along with the other projects that i will need to make to make them

Welcome. Just one piece of advice. Before you power up, thoroughly check it for freedom of movement. Do your best to find a copy of the owners manual. Buy a good training manual, if necessary one for any lathe of comparable size. The manual will provide you with generic safety and operation information. My learning curve took about 6 months. Good Luck.

Hello Bill, I diid go over the lathe with some good quality oil and checked everting was moving as it should be before i turned the motor over.. I did find the back gear would not stay engaged but thats now not a problem after some good use..
i bought the Amateur's lathe book about 4 years ago and must of read it about 20 times over but like you say its going to take sometime to put that into practice

...

...but I'm thinking my lathe being an older 3 speed pulley just is not fast enough

With a decent HSS tool, there's practically no such thing as not being fast enough. Sometimes finishing and screwcutting is done at speeds of 10 M per minute or less, or even by hand-rotating the spindle or chuck for some tasks.

Screw cutting, now there is a discussion! I was just thinking if i had a bit more speed then i may get a better finish but from all the points people have made here I'm thinking not...
I have a full set of gears with my M type so screw cutting is something I will try

I made my own live centres, one of my first projects

Bought a pack of cheap bearings from ebay for the job, they aint brilliant but I still use them 10 years later

Buy a DTI with a magnetic stand for 20 quid, you'll definitely need it before long

Enjoy and GL

Edit: I did a headstock stripdown here. Take your time and enjoy the learning of new skills

thanks for the link Ady1, just about to sit down with a morning coffee and read the whole thing..
and making my own centres is something that i have thought about doing, as you say it would make a good first project and i have my eye on a DTI and magnetic stand at my local tool shop

I will order that book tonight and I'm sure I should have a knife tool in all the hss tooling that came with the lathe

03/01/2019 02:42:38

Thanks for all the replys much appreciated, I will start tomorrow buy adjusting the head stock bearings..

I will also buy a live center as I only have a dead center at the moment..

The k you Hopper for explaining how to adjust the head stock bearings

02/01/2019 22:05:53

what is the best tool profile for what i am trying to do?

02/01/2019 21:50:01

I will try a bar stock that i have tomorrow on the lathe and see if thats better.
i am thinking that its basically the bolts that are the problem after what martin has said and maybe i need t think of a better plan..
i changed my feed rate from the lowest to highest and it did get better but I'm thinking my lathe being an older 3 speed pulley just is not fast enough

I bought an older Drummond m type lathe a few months back and i am having problems with getting a good surface finish..
at the moment I am turning down some bolts to make a wheel adaptor for my rc truck and the surface look like its ripping out, would this just be the cheap bolt material doing this?

this is another tool that came with my lathe that looks like it was made to bolt to the cross slide.. would this be a radius cutter?

Thread: what tool is this?
02/01/2019 16:15:24

thank you everyone for the input.. yes I am now starting to think it was a puller or pusher for a one off job..
I will hang it from the wall just incase

02/01/2019 05:48:08

this tool came with a lathe that i bought a few months ago and i am trying to find out what it is used for?
I was told it is as a bell chuck but it looks like it was built to be placed in a chuck..
I'm starting to think it is some sort of dead centre
