Thread: Cutting Steel Plate.
11/09/2021 09:46:23

Probably the easiest way is to find someone with gas cutting kit ........or the grinder suggestion.

Thread: Drunken pulley
15/04/2021 14:17:09

I am not a perfectionist but it would irritate me if the pulley had an head ache and would have to fix it with a bonded in bush bored correctly to the rim, I would not drill it !

I am guessing that the machine doesnt run 24/7 ? so would not worry about wear issues myself, belt will last for "ages".

Others may have different thoughts, as just seen above heat issues ?

Thread: Hangar door suspension
08/04/2021 09:25:01

Might not be a cheap job if corrosion has attacted the tracks etc. Henderson is very nice gear, but not cheap, F.H. Brundle have a selection of door gear also.

Good Luck, risk assessment and safe working plan spring to my mind also !

Thread: Pictures in posts and font sizes.
20/03/2021 11:59:39

That brought the Linux users out smiley , I have been one for over 15 now yes .

There are none so blind as those who don't want to hear ? ? ? Think I got that quote wrong ? ? ? lol

Thread: Damaged mill
20/02/2021 19:27:50

No possible in this case, but a mate always said I like to go in home after the job has gone well, rather than pushing things and finishing on a disaster.smiley

20/02/2021 19:11:38

I don't think that would clamp up if was part of the main casting? A little more information would help to see what is going on, a picture is worth a thousand words as they say, so two pictures must be worth two thousand words etc.

17/02/2021 15:03:05

Made me smile more than once, didn't see about the ones who put up an answer exactly the same as a couple more up post cos they have added their solution without reading the thread. smiley

blush Oh dear I haven't read all the posts lol.

Thread: You think you have trouble starting your car on a cold morning?
17/02/2021 10:07:47
Posted by Howard Lewis on 16/02/2021 19:44:26:

Didn't think that Land Rovers had excess fuel (No production DPA provided it) My Sries 2 relied on heater plugs. Substituting a CAV Thermostart which heated the ingoing air with a flame much improved cold starting!

Howard

Yes, you rember correctly Howard, but as I said I had fitted a 2.2 BMC diesel, used in alot of taxis, which had an in line pump.yes Slowest thing on the road around these parts, except for milk floats. The heater plugs in those series 2 engines were wired in series, if one failed you had no chance !

We will be talking frozen fuel on a cold journey next, cured by a heated filter housing, which was a joy at last adaption .

I have enjoyed this thread, lots of fond? memories.

Kigas? Easystart?

Once you needed Easy start it was the begining of the end, burnt all the crap out that was sealing your rings.surprise

I once had a Landrover with 2.2 BMC diesel fitted that fired up like that, cold Start button, that just chucked loads of fuel in, good for going up hill loadedyes, they were not supposed to be accessible from the driving seat, it used to fill the yard with Fog.

I think the answer is in the name, you would have to be one to pay their prices. lol

I used 3 of those those cheapo bearings top and bottom on my bandsaw guides, side and end thrust and am amazed how long they have lasted with the loading that they have taken.

Thread: To oil or not to oil
13/02/2021 09:15:24
Posted by Andrew Johnston on 12/02/2021 19:57:39:

In simple terms neat cutting oils provide lubrication and not much cooling, whereas soluble oils provide cooling and not much lubrication.....

Says quite alot to me, I have tanks and pumps, but don't use them anymore, a brush is my choice. I am not in a hurry these days, even to remove lots of metal. However careful I was always ended up with getting splashesd, cant forget the smell from the old fashioned stuff.

Thread: Grinding out a small crack for welding with Dremel
13/02/2021 08:53:41

My input at post no 11 to try to solve this, small or big, problem, lol.

Cast iron and plate sort of tells me its an angle grinder job without much doubt, could be wrong often am, as the wife she will confrim that for sure, again without much doubt !

I go with The Bear, on both of his points. lol

Thread: Cracked motor mounting plate
05/02/2021 08:31:27

Depends what final result you want, appearance wise? To my mind a bolted on plate as mentiioned, L shaped of you want, with a deep vee either side, heated and filled in by someone who can run a rod would be a succesfull repair.

I am thinking this a not a highly stress part, but as someone mentioned why did it crack?

Thread: The Repair Shop is getting to me...
10/01/2021 12:51:12

And I thought it was just me who was grumpy about this load off rubbish. I have had to resort to the switch, could stand no more of it, should have been a nicer experiance.

There would be even more blubbing if there were bills presented on collection, say x hours at say £40 -50 an hour = 850 notes sir, lol. ......."no way, wish I had left it neglected now"

So the "experts" are paid by the program makers, I would like to see the paperwork ?

Thread: Simple 2D Cad system
04/01/2021 12:50:18

I have been a linux fan for years so don't normally spend money on software, but recently upgraded my qcad package for a very reasonable 30 ish pounds. I have used qcad for over 15 years, recently tried some free packages but for me nothing matches up to qcad. There will be other opinions.........

I have been looking for something that will run on my recent chromebook, Librecad is an option.

Qcad is linux windooz and mac by the way, free no hassle trial is also available.

Projects look good.

Thread: TIG is harder than it looks
31/12/2020 11:30:52

Found it they do lots of thing engineering , I had a chat with the welding instructor, he said he would tailor the time to whatever was requested.

Noting like someone telling you how to do it and then watching and saying where you are going wrong. I seem to remember they are somehow connected to R- Tech, nice machines and you get your fee back if you buy an expensive model.
