Thread: Hydraulic Copying Attachment - Micrometer Adjustment |

Gents The patent says: the depth of cut is adjustable by moving the fulcrum axis 5 of the lever 4. Does this mean that by changing the fulcrum the setpoint going to the summing junction is reduced so that the travel required to achieve a null position is reduced? I'll get my coat!

Cai the gib strip is on the side of the carriage and adjusted with four screws which are fitted with locknuts. I believe what you refer to as being underneath is the retaining plate which is adjusted with shims. Pinning the gib strip as suggested above by ega will stop it riding up on the points of the adjusting screws which will reduce the running clearance. HTH Dave

Thread: Myford dividing head enhancements |

I have almost completed an adaptor to hang a Myford DH off the tail end of my Boxford CSB. It is essentially as the one referred to above in the BHI Journal. To get the DH at a sensible position I chose to support it from the banjo spigot on the LH lead screw bearing via an arm locating on a plug fitted to the DH over arm socket. HTH Dave |

Double decking: The Southern Region of BR ran two sets of DD EMUs from the early Fifties to 1971. They were not true DDs but split level to work within our cramped loading gauge. Apparently the turn around time for station work was greater as the number of doors in the stock could not be increased whilst maintaining the greater capacity. Ironicaly the Great Central referred to above was built to the continental loading gauge. What a shame it was a victim of Beeching,s axe. Dave |

Marples (Beeching was only carrying out orders) believed his motorways should carry the freight so the Great Central disappeared and the Settle and Carlisle nearly followed. Ernest Marples, as well as being Minister for Transport had his own road construction company. I wonder why he was so keen on motorways?

Thread: Boxford change gears for screwcutting. |

Hello Terry Harold Hall has a page on his website which may help you, it gives all the possible changewheel selections for a given pitch based on a 5t step in wheel teeth. This may have been derived from NthreadP but only Harold could answer that. HTH Dave

Hello Bob, those rods are neat! I realise that the Humber is not a very high powered bike but do you need to nitride them after you have finished the machining? I once saw a set of rods destined for a 1760cc Ford X flow that had been shot peened - they had a surface not dissimilar to a golf ball. The engine ran ok though! Cheers Dave |

Peter one wonders how such a crane can perform lifts as it looks capable of doing without rolling. It would be interesting to know how a stable counterbalance is achieved. thanks for posting! Dave |

PGK This link took me down a very interesting route which lead to the inventions of John Blease. It was amazing to read that although not a doctor he had acted as an anesthetist on one occasion! Dr Manley subsequently joined Blease's company. Cheers Dave |

Thread: Adjusting an M&W level |
20/02/2020 06:44:28 |
Robin I was recently given an ELM level which is a 12" version of the ELS. It had a broken vial. I removed the old vial which was held in by a potting compound similar to Polyfilla and am about to rebuild it with a vial obtained at a very reasonable price from Cromwell tools (I have no connection). Each end of the vial holding tube has two vertical screws, one screwhead inside the end plug of the tube, the other beneath the end of the tube. both have access holes for an allen key.The lower of the two screws acts as a jack for calibration, the upper one is a securing screw. To calibrate, the securing screw is released and the jacking screw is adjusted as required. I haven't done this yet but my understanding is that the level is calibrated by obtaining the same deviation when the level is swapped end for end on a flat surface. Once done, possibly over many iterations, the securing screw is tightened and a final check is made. HTH

I had a 1961 BSA A7 500 many years ago, that had cycle thread fixings all over the engine. The barrel to crankcase studs were 3/8 Whitworth into the alloy cases and cycle thread where the stud passed through the barrel base flange. I cleared out the local bike shop's stock of 3/8 nuts during the rebuild. Dave |

Gene I have used Dow Corning 736 silicon sealant to secure winding tails after digging around for star points on 3 phase motors. This has a max temp of 315 degrees C. As an aside I also used the same product to re-secure/seal the glass window of my kitchen oven door. It has lasted over 5 years with, sometimes, an inside temperature of over 220 degrees when baking bread. HTH Dave |

Morning all Hopper mentions Martin Cleve above: in his book ' screwcutting in the lathe' he describes a simple jig to aid producing a screwcutting toolbit on an off-hand grinder. See pages 123 et seq. l made one and am very pleased with it. It is worth getting a copy as it is a mine of useful information. HTH Dave |
