I will be using the GT inserts primarily on aluminium, how do they perform on other materials..? |
Thread: Screwcutting on the lathe |

Iain, as Jason says there must be a problem somewhere, my mini lathe was 500 watts (brushed) and I had no problem cutting threads with it of various sizes, I used low range which had plenty of torque at low speeds. |

Would I be correct in that ARC only do the CCGT inserts in the Sumitomo range.? |

Henry, I will let you know I have ordered a Chinese one for a grand total of £7.00. A friend bought his for £6.00 and says it is fine and more than accurate enough. Will be interesting to see what turns up. Ron |

failure in this instance would risk irretrievably damaging the shaft that would be difficult for me to replicate
Alan, I would have thought that answers your question......pin it to be certain. Alan I use 638 all the time and swear by it but going back to what you said in your original post (highlighted above) and based purely on that I can't see how "not to pin" is even a consideration just do it and remove any doubt. Morning Jason The picture of the type B main frame set up in the lathe looks interesting I am guessing the V and 123 blocks are balancing out the bulk offset in the casting. Is the V taped on with 123 cross wired over the top..? Ron |

One thing is for certain Jason, I dont think I would ever get tired of looking at those engines they are different to say the least. I can see that some of the parts may be a bit of a challenge to set up for machining but the end result makes it well worth it, the Type D I think looks amazing. Can I ask you keep us up to speed with progress it will be good to see them come together. Ron p.s. Forgot to say that watching the videos both the Type D and SB2C run very nicely indeed.

No that's another one of his engine designs, a Type B
Jason, would I be correct in thinking you have a full set of castings for the engine and going by the picture did you bring them in from the US. |

It was yesterday actually we were in the town and passed the 3 mobile shop so as a long standing customer popped in to see if I could have a free upgrade to a new phone, no problem sir and after 20 minutes walked out with a new £400 phone. We had a coffee in M&S and as we were leaving and standing at the top of the stone stairs the wife asked to see the new phone she was admiring it when she dropped it and I watched it bounce down 12 steps to the bottom. It was wrecked the screen was smashed and wouldn't work, I went back to 3 but I hadn't taken out any cover so had to buy a pbone. I didn't spend £400 but they did me a good deal on another model which is still street's ahead of my old phone. The wife is still upset over it despite my telling her not to worry about it in fact the new one seems to be nicer to use and the camera is excellent so not all bad. I know I know it was a bit stupid handing the wife the phone at the top of the stairs

Sound system as mentioned above |
14/11/2019 14:08:33 |
No visual just sound, I am giving a budget priced sound system a try for the loco. Its a third of the price of the top end systems which can cover a particular class of loco. It comes complete with a speaker and is ready to go, no setting up other than the volume which is adjustable. The two tone horn is not correct for a class 22 but I can live with that, I rather like the engine start up and the run down, sounds quite good I think. It sounds better than it does through the camera and I have also found that the sound quality improves if the speaker is housed and not free standing in the open. You may need to adjust your volume up or down. Edited By Ron Laden on 14/11/2019 14:09:49 Edited By Ron Laden on 14/11/2019 14:13:11 |
Thread: Rod Stewart's Model Railway |
14/11/2019 07:09:44 |
That is railway modelling to a very high standard I think, you don't see too many layouts with that level of realism every inch of it is full of detail. He obviously has a very good eye for it just look at the scene at the station entrance in the last photo with the yellow cabs and all the people and how busy that looks, very realistic. I take my hat off to him very impressive indeed. Edited By Ron Laden on 14/11/2019 07:10:08 Edited By Ron Laden on 14/11/2019 07:11:09 Edited By Ron Laden on 14/11/2019 07:12:34 |

Thread: Allchin Gears- thinking of using pre-cut chinese |
11/11/2019 20:48:44 |
Phil, I have gone with a set of Chinese gears (picture below) for my electric engine, its my own design but a lot of it is loosely based on the Minnie. Scale is 1.625 and the gears I have gone with are 1.5 MOD. The good points with the gears are price, the set cost 1/3rd the cost of the best UK prices I could find. They are well made and machined true and mesh together nicely. The couple of not so good points are that they are quite thick at 15mm so the 6mm and 8mm width I need does mean quite a bit of machining. Also the dark ring you see around the teeth is from the hardening process which is on all of the gears and it really is hard, HSS doesnt like it at all so it does mean insert tooling then its not so bad. I have no idea if all Chinese gears are hardened this way so it was a bit of a surprise when they arrived. For me the main reason for going Chinese was the cost, it was way cheaper than I could find anywhere else. Ron

I use this type on my VMC. They are more than accurate enough for my needs and not expensive.
I also have these fitted to my WM 16 & so far they have proved invaluable & accurate enough for all my needs. Have just changed batteries after approx a year so battery life is not an issue with me, well worth the outlay. Usual disclaimer applies. George. Snap, I also fitted them to my SX2 and have found them to be accurate and reliable. Ron |
