Thread: New Chuck won’t screw on
21/07/2021 16:50:43

I decided to fit a new Chuck to my ml7, being a relative newcomer to precision work I opted for the easy way of purchasing a Chuck complete with fitted backplate. Well it will only screw on half a turn, told supplier only to be told that they are machined on a myford and then checked on two other spindles to check fit. When looking at the thread on my backplate you can see a full turn of the thread before it is fully formed, but on the new one the full thread is formed at just over half a turn. If anything I would have thought my spindle thread would be worn not larger than original, any thoughts please.

Thanks Richard

Thread: Useful MEW Table

Being a newcomer to the model world, I have been looking on the net for drilling and tapping sizes, recently I found this among some lathe bits and pieces and I think it’s really good. It must be a few years old because I’ve had it about 30 years.

Thank you, I’ve just ordered a couple of HH books, Tool and Cutter sharpening and one about Milling. I do have a book on making small workshop tools so may start with that, as you say learning and hopefully ending up with something useful.

Thanks for the replies, I might have owned the Cromwell for 25 years but only actually used it a few times to make nylon bushes. Whatever project I start with it will be a steep learning curve as I have not worked to such fine tolerances that will be needed, it will be a challenge along with sourcing materials at reasonable delivery costs, which can be very expensive at times to where we live.

I have a Cromwell and Ml7 Lathes, and an Amolco Mill,I’ve owned the Cromwell for 25 years but have never done any serious machining.
Wanting to learn to use them properly is why I’m here, the plan is to either build a Wig Wag or small workshop tools as a starter project.
