Thread: Change of direction a single phase capacitor run motor |
14/12/2018 16:43:16 |
Hi Martin,, At the risk of Hijacking your thread, could I ask a question of the other Members? I have a small 1/4HP motor, made by Hoover, single phase,no cap, very smooth running and quiet. So far,so good ! Problem is that it cannot make up its mind which way it wants to run,no kidding ! Switch on to-day,it goes one way, tomorrow ? who knows, could be either way. This is less than helpful,to put it mildly. Anyone got any ideas how to help it on its way [one way or the other ] IT,S 1425 REVS so a useful item .I had in mind to use it for a disc sander, but as it is,it would make life interesting ! |

If you want to use your saw in the vertical mode, the teeth must be facing you,and pointing down ! How could you use it if the blade was facing backwards ? |
Thread: Cost of deliveries |

I was surprised at the amount of feedback resulting from my recent Post. It would appear that this issue and that regarding the "Pre Inspection" of machines before delivery, touched a sore spot with many Members. Does no harm to give these topics an airing now and then. Thanks to all who responded. |

Martin, I thought I had answered that question for you. Your saw does cut on the forward stroke, they all do. Looking at your machine from the left hand side, looking at the belt drive, your motor should be turning anti-clockwise. Check it out ! |

Thread: A question about lock (jam) nuts |
13/12/2018 15:45:43 |
As the MAN said "What,s in a name" ? I always thought that stuff was way overpriced, while being no better than many other makes, but then,I could never afford it anyway,so maybe it was a case of sour grapes? |

Thread: If you bought this lathe what would you do? |

Perhaps this machine was never run and tested before being sent out ? Such a pity !! Am I surprised ? not really. |
Thread: Cost of deliveries |
11/12/2018 20:06:57 |
Came across a post here regarding the high cost of deliveries from England to anywhere else, often much more than the cost of the items involved. I have experienced this many times, item value £10 delivery £13/14. Needless to say, that,s a non-starter. Strange to say,not all suppliers seem to be bound by this creed, very odd ! Wonder what the position will be after next year ? Watch this space ? |
Thread: How o Remove Chester Super Lux Motor |
11/12/2018 17:32:40 |
Not likely to be of any help, but why does the Super Lux have such a switch and does the "Common or garden" model have one too ? Just asking in case I ever come across it,since I have a LUX ! |
Thread: Pro’s and cons of owning an horizontal milling machine |
10/12/2018 14:33:09 |
I seem to recall that Chester used to offer a milling machine which was both vertical and horizontal. Not sure if they still sell them, but might be worth asking. As has been said, for some types of work, they are in a class of their own,but for the small operator or shop ?? Plus, they do take up a lot of room. |
Thread: Source of Aluminium Lined Plastic Water Pipe? |

S-O-D, You,re looking for 20 m of 3" copper tube, left over ?????????????? I wish you luck ! People have killed for less ! PS I think that blue pipe is the same as the Rednecks use over here, just plain plastic. |
Thread: Arc Euro ER16 runout |
09/12/2018 13:08:16 |
On the subject of Collets,I bought a set years ago, which I use on my mill. The holder has a threaded shank so would be no use for through work, but for the moment that,s not an issue. What I would like to know is this : How do I tell ER16 from ER25 ? There are 8 in the set from 4 to 16 mm and the holder is MT2 which I fitted with an MT3 sleeve. Have never used them in the lathe, only to hold cutters in the mill. Just curious. |

Some great ideas there regarding Rotary tables, much food for thought ! Thanks everyone |

Drinking and smoking are two things which can be cured by lack of money. How do I know ? Very simple,I have yet to meet the barman who will supply me with drink unless I pay him cash. They say it,s "An Old Spanish custom". If these people want to drink/smoke themselves into a wooden box,let them at it,but dont expect everyone else to help them along the way. I see the same thing over here and it just gives me A-P-I-T-A Food has never been cheaper so if someone cannot feed themselves these days, they must have very expensive tastes or be downright thick. |
Thread: Single point thread cutting |
08/12/2018 20:39:44 |
Sparey mentioned in his book, many moons ago, that it was becoming standard practice, even then,to leave the half nuts engaged, even where there was an indicator. That way there was no way to go wrong. I removed the indicator fro my lathe, since I never used it,I just cut the thread, move out, reverse, and move in again for another cut,no problem. |
Thread: Hemingway Knurling Tool |
06/12/2018 17:16:11 |
My knurling tool was made from "Drawings" on the back of a cornflake box. It,s not pretty [not much of my stuff is ],but ten years down the line,it,s still working. Take it from me,it,s not Rocket Science, even I could make one,and that,s saying something! It,s nothing more than two wheels in a frame. |
Thread: Cooling oil unit for saw or lathe |
06/12/2018 17:06:07 |
No matter what you come up with, there,s always someone out there with a better idea. Thank you guys,I will take both of those ideas on board. And I thought I was in the "Top Ten "? ?????? Excuse me while I crawl away under a flat stone ! |
Thread: New Lathe |
06/12/2018 16:58:23 |
As they say, depends on what you want to do,rather than what you can afford. If you need to do work of a certain size but cannot afford a machine big enough, that answers the question.! Horses for courses !!

Thread: Warco v Chester. |
06/12/2018 16:52:18 |
May not be much to choose between them,so I would be more inclined to look at the "After Sale Service". Seem to remember that both had issues with this from time to time,to judge from some recent Posts. Maybe just hiccups, but worth checking out. Ask around ! |
