Dont think you will see much on Done Deal.

There is a place in Longford called Kenquip, I think, might be worth a look.

Thread: 3 Phase in a Model Engineers workshop
13/06/2020 09:22:02

When I lived in Dublin, I had a 3 phase supply, 415 v from the pole across the road which carried the supply to all the houses along the road.

Now that I live in the Sticks, I get my 3 phase from a Rotary Converter to run my lathe and mill ,each with 1,5 motors

However, my wood planer and spindle moulder both have 4 hp motors, but the converter has no problem handling them. Could it be that your converter is too small, although this seems unlikely.

I would be more interested in how to open the bottle when one cannot find an opener and one has few good teeth left ??

Thread: New Lathe - poor suface finish on my results

Would have to agree with all of the above advice, Reason ? Have been there-done that-ruined the tee shirts !

Overhang from chuck is too much

Tool always cuts on the return stroke, that,s why you need to retract it

Forget about inserts at this stage, HSS is all you need to get perfect finish, easy to grind, cheap to buy.

Speed is easy to work out, most books give detailed info on it, Sparey mentions 80/1/4 of work dia= revs. all gone Metric now, but the idea is the same.

Tool needs to CUT, not rub, so centre height needs to be right

You think you have problems now ? Wait till you get to parting off !!!!!

One last thing ,keep in mind the size of your machine, it is not a factory monster tipping the scales at ten tons.

Like parting off, this seems to be a bit of a "Black Art"

Perhaps more of a Hit-and-miss exercise.

The other two ? Who knows ?

Thread: Homemade cutting fluid
09/06/2020 13:51:49

I buy water based coolant from a local farm shop, at 27 Euro for 5 litres.

Mixed at 20/25 to 1 ,it goes a long, long way, so why bother making up your own concoctions ?

Kero or WD40 for Ali alright, but the mix for everything else.

But then, my standards are so Low-----------------------?

Thread: Parting off

Like many, many others,,,,, I find parting off to be the biggest P-I-T-A !

However, I live in hope, but more likely to die in dispair

Welcome to the club [gets bigger all the time ]sad

Thread: choosing a lathe
08/06/2020 09:32:02

Good morning David,

As you say second hand machines are fairly thin on the ground over here.

When I went looking for some woodwork machines years ago, the stuff on offer was not even fit for a scrapyard, and being "offered" at silly money.. I ended up buying new from a guy in Kendal, in the North of England. Drove from Dublin to Larne, got the boat over to Scotland, then drove down to Kendal, and back again with everything in my van.

When it came to buying my lathe, I went Dublin to Holyhead to Chester and bought new again. Just loaded everything into my van and headed home, no messing about with pallets ect

Might be worth while asking around for someone with a van taking a load to England and returning empty.

If you would like to view my collection, you are more than welcome [if you can travel !], can stay over if you need.

If interested, send me a message.

In the meantime, take care.

If I was waiting until I could afford a "Classic" I would never have got a lathe, so I bought Chinese Junk in order to get started. To my surprise, it is still going well, 20 years later.

Will it sell for huge money when I snuff it ? Who knows, wont be my problem !

Get what you can afford, bigger the better, and get started, you wont live forever.

Remember the story of the man walking through the woods, looking for a good walking stick ?

He rejected each one he saw, thinking to find a better one further on.

Before he knew it, he was out of the wood, with no stick !laugh

Thread: Replacement key for Emco stand cupboards

At the rate I lose keys, I stay away from things like that ! The locks on my lathe just click shut, I forget where the keys ever went.

Thread: Keeping Shop clean
07/06/2020 12:14:29

An old turner I knew always maintained that if you have time to clean up your workshop, then you are not busy.

When I asked him how he managed to find anything, he said that it was simply a matter of remembering where he last dropped it Sounds like a very logical approach !

Every so often I have a major clean-up, mostly after I have mis-laid so many tools that I am unable to carry on, then it,s like a reunion of old friends, never know what might turn up.cheeky

As Jason said, let sleeping dogs lie, not enough to worry about.

Thread: Colchester Student Lathe
03/06/2020 11:23:48

Surprised to hear that some Colchester lathes were/are bad at parting off !

I though they were supposed to be the cream of the pack?, at the price of them, I would expect something better.

Perhaps my Chinese Monday Morning Product is not so bad after all !cheeky

Thread: internal grooves for o rings
02/06/2020 13:09:28

Thank you for that Martin, I have just been checking out those grooving tools, never knew there were so many types available, well worth investigating. I can see now that my attempts were crude to say the least.

Plenty of that stuff around on Ali express but getting anything from China right now is a hit and miss affaire except for a virus, of course.. I have three items "ON THE WAY" one of which is "In the country", but which country ?.

Just a case of wait and see. Still it,s good to know what is available.

Take care.
