Thread: SPG Tools in Hinkley

Lots of web-sites do NOT work on my system.

I put it down to Witchcraft!

Your view may differ

I'm afraid that the Green encircled link does NOT work on my system but I am grateful to everybody who has (and perhaps still is) looking into this for me.

I have written to the firm and will know, in due time, if they are still in business.

When I was buying my Mill from SPG, they rarely answered the telephone and I was reduced to leaving an message on a Telephone Answering Machine - so I don't believe there would be any point in ringing.

With best wishes and thanks again.

Thank you ALL for taking the time to respond.

I'm a little surprised that the Web-site worked for Mr. Lewis when it would NOT work for me!

I have written to the address provided by Mr. Downes and await a response.

My experience with web-sites is that they often display incorrect information - on the basis of a web-site, I went to the nearest Lidl to buy a box of 107 HSS drill bits for £14.99 (as mentioned in another thread) only to find that I was wasting my time!

The Interweb is the last place that I will look for information about anything!

08/01/2022 17:12:19

The person with whom I communicated was Simon Gudger when I was negotiating the purchase.

I'm NOT particularly worried about wether a web site works but the fact that the domain is offered for sale does concern me.

MC

08/01/2022 16:09:24

I bought my Mill from them in 2020 during the lockdown - so they were certainly in business then.

I am happy with the Mill so wanted to tell somebody else about it.

Does anybody know if SPG Tools of Hinkley are still in business.

I was going to send a link to their web-site to a chum and I can NOT access the site. It seems that the Domain is up for sale.

Happy New Year

Thread: Summer 1990 Rotary Table
08/01/2022 02:04:35

Neither excuse or apology is needed or expected.

I wonder if the copyright notice is invalid because the name of the company is wrong!

Intellectual Property Lawyers would make a lot of money out of things like that!

Has anybody other than Circlip actually made one from the drawings?

With best wishes and thanks again.

07/01/2022 16:18:24

I did nothing more complicated than enlarge the drawing so that the element for each part filled an A4 window on my screen and then printed "Current View" on A4 sheets.

I notice that in many places on the drawing, the draftsman used a " (inch symbol) before the decimal point - but NOT consistently.

I notice that the holes on the 2.5" and 3/4" circles are only shown for part of the circles (say between 1 o'c and 5 o'c) rather than for the entire circle. Any idea why, please?

If Mr. Daish is a subscriber to this forum, is there any way of contacting him, please?

Very many thanks, in anticipation, for your continued assistance.

Dear Nicholas

Thank you for taking the time to write.

Those photographs are far better than the ones in the pdf that I downloaded from the archive. The second shows detail of construction much more clearly.

I hope that I did NOT offend when I wrote about the overlapping sheets breaking parts of the assembly.

With best wishes and thanks again.

MC

07/01/2022 08:54:19

There is a photograph of the underside of the assembly in the article but it has reproduced poorly.

That would give confirmation of the way that the table was constructed.

If anybody has a copy of the printed magazine it would be very helpful to have a high resolution colour photograph of the top of page 56.

Although I have a digital and print subscription, the scanned image in the magazine in the archive is rather "washed out"

With best wishes and thanks again.

Very many thanks to everybody for your contributions and comments.

I was always taught (I passed O'level Technical Drawing with grade A over 50 years ago) never to write a number less than unity without a zero in front of the decimal point.

Clearly the draftsman who created the scanned drawings never heard of that convention.

Having read all the comments, I now think the screw should have been 5/8 inch long

I am sorry to write that I found the "overlapping printable Pdf pages"to which JasonB referred NOT very helpful because the some of the parts appear on two sheets. But I enlarged the pdf and printed each element entirely on an A4 sheet. (I'll be happy to send those to anybody interested if you send me your email address, off-list.)

Has anybody (apart from Circlip) actually build this Rotary Table, please?

I came across some 4"diameter Aluminium this afternoon and may be able to acquire a slice 1/2" thick. Can anybody see any problems in using Aluminium rather than steel for the turntable, please?

With best wishes and Very many thanks again

Ladies & Gentlemen

Has anybody made the Rotary Table described in the Summer 1990 issue, please?

I have looked at the drawings and carefully read the article.

The list of screws on Sheet 2 of the Drawings mentions an EIGHT INCH long 4BA socket cap screw but I can't see where this is used in the finished article.

The photograph on page 56 of the article doesn't have sufficient clarity for me to see how it's used.

I intend to replace 4BA with M4 throughout but cannot find a 200mm long M4 Cap screw from any of my usual sources.

I have tried to access the Archive to see if I can see detail in the article that was lost when I saved it as pdf - but without a total lack of success.

Happy New Year and Very many thanks for reading this

Thread: Middle of Lidl
02/01/2022 14:05:18

If anybody lives in the Welwyn Garden City area, they might like to know that there were two packs of the 107 piece drill set left (after I bought one!).

Lots of accessories for "Dremel" type tools, too. They were so cheap that I decided to stock up.

Also Coin Cells in different sizes at 6 for £1.99

My very best wishes to you and your families for a Happy, Healthy, Peaceful, Successful, Prosperous, Stress- and Covid- free New Year.

I have twice served, once locally and once at the Old Bailey

When I was summoned recently, I wrote back explaining that I would be delighted to serve but that I had been diagnosed with a Prostate Problem and hoped that the court would be sympathetic to allow me to empty my bladder quite frequently.

I was excused.

Does part of the rod need to be unthreaded?

If not, consider buying some 3/16 BSW studding and cut off the lengths that you need.

MC

21/11/2021 11:13:20

Steve

Where are you located?

I have a number of 7/8 BSW taps (inherited from my late father when the family company was building Fire Escapes before WWII).

I you are local, you could borrow.

For security, I suggest you respond OFF LIST.

With best wishes.

Thread: Converting fractions to decimals

I can assure you that the screen remained blank

That may be because my computer was tired so late in the evening but the screen remained blank.

I have now downloaded the catalogue and printed the chart.

I have never heard of "American Inches" in the past.

I think it would be better if printed on A3 paper since the text is VERY small - but I don't have an A3 printer. I'm lucky when my A4 printer works !

With best wishes and thanks

Thread: Being nice to a vise

I made a simple Screw Jack by screwing a bolt into a Hexagonal Connector Nut (the sort that are used for joining two pieces of studding).

Obviously, the minimum space is the (length of nut + thickness of head of bolt) but it can be made as large as needed by using longer bolts.

I tidied it up by putting a taper on the top of the Connector and turned the top of the bolt round and knurled it (but mostly because I had made a knurling tool for my Taig Lathe and wanted to use it!).

Posted by Tim Stevens on 16/08/2021 11:53:16:

It is a chart of fractional inch sizes (down to 64ths) to millimetres (and four decimal places) for all dimensions from 0 to 12", and then in 32nds to 24".

Sadly the Koken web site does NOT work on my computer!

I put "Koken.co.uk" in the usual place and the Firefox screen remained blank!

I never got as far as the catalogue - pity because the Chart seemed useful (from what was written)

Thread: Empty Drill Boxes
02/09/2021 23:16:13

Tracy Tools will sell me a set of Split point HSS drills in a metal box for £13.20 including Postage and V. A. T. ; the basic cost of the set is less than the price of an empty box from Drill Service (Horley).

So I shall probably go down that route.

Very many thanks for all your help

I hope that you and your families are, and will remain, safe and well.
