Thread: Sunbeam B24 350cc 1939

Not wanting to start an argument, but it is under the Vehicle Restoration section, and has a fully descriptive title. Would be more likely to get lost amongst the more general motorcycle thread IMHO.

Thread: What did you do today? 2023
13/01/2023 17:44:08

John Doe 2 - pretty sure that boiler does not have a modulated burner. What it does have is a boiler thermostat (not the same as the room thermostat), and that's what you should be turning down. From your description, it sounds like you have partially closed the gas cock in the supply pipe - probably not what the manufacturers intended!

The system when installed should have included a suitable bypass so that sufficient water can circulate to prevent boiler overheating - common practice is to use the bathroom rad or towel rail fitted with two lockshield valves so that it cannot be shut off without tools.

Rob

Edit - apologies, re-reading your posts, it looks like you are pretty clued-up on how it should be working

Thread: Recycling old CDs
13/01/2023 16:39:39

Thanks chaps, some good ideas there - I'm particularly drawn to the Stirling engine, as I don't have any milling cutters, nor any badgers. And it's a good fifteen years since I did any clay-shooting.

Having a bit of a tidy-up, I now have a pile of old CD-ROMs - the sort of thing they used to give away on the front of computer magazines "back in the day". Very few, if any, of the programs contained on them are much use these days, so it's chucking out time for them.

Anyone got any ideas for alternative uses (keep it clean!) or do any of you know if they can be put into the normal plastic recycling bin (also applies to the cases the come in)?

Thanks,

Rob

They call cutlery 'flatware' over there, don't they?

There is (or used to be) a product called Micarta, much used by the knife-making fraternity. Lots of different colours available if you wanted to move away from the traditional.

I use an old shower curtain to cover my lathe, seems to work ok - that's the woven, synthetic fabric sort, rather than the ones like a thick plastic bag.

Thread: Anyone have experience of PIV (Positive Input Ventilation)
11/01/2023 16:30:51

No experience so far, but have looked at the Vent-Axia range https://www.vent-axia.com/positive-input-ventilation

A friend who is a heating engineer thinks they are a good idea, and has been urging me to bite the bullet. As yet undecided,

In theory, the combination of postcode and delivery point suffix (DPS) should be enough to identify any property in the country. However, having spent many years working on address-matching for the UK government, I know there's always a small percentage where it does not work as planned - in cases like that, you can't really blame any delivery company for errors.

Unleaded at a Shell garage around the corner is 156.9p a litre, but a Shell garage on the main road into town is 151.9 - I can't figure it out either frown

Just an aside, sorry, but that Boxford site always throws up a Trojan warning on my PC - I can explicitly allow access, but I just wonder what exactly it thinks is the problem?

Well, I'm not too worried yet. The hype usually outstrips the reality, except for carefully crafted demonstration pieces.

Petrol in preference to IPA, I would think, much better at dissolving goo (usual safety advice applies). Never had much joy with IPA.

But if you can get it, Plus Gas is excellent, or as I mentioned (if you have any) good old lighter fluid.

Rob

Edit - the above assuming it's congealed oil, rather than corrosion that's the issue.

I certainly wouldn't be brave enough to take it apart. If you have access to an ultrasonic cleaner, I'd go for that, with a suitable solvent.

Or lighter fluid usually works quite well, and leaves a very slightly oily residue.

Thread: Just How Expensive Is a Card & Stamp?
03/01/2023 18:58:05

At the risk of being shot down in flames by those who seem to have an in-built (built-in?) dislike of electronic communications - except, of course, this forum - I know, and use, the website you are referring to. Just to clarify a couple of points, you don't have to sign up to anything to view your card and secondly, the site does NOT choose the card for you - you select from what is probably a larger array than most non-specialist shops carry, and you can personalise the greeting and message to whatever you fancy. Presumably those criticising haven't actually looked at the range available? Or even seen those sent to them, if they refuse to be 'suckered in' to actually viewing them?

Comes in handy when sending to friends and relatives around the world, and of course is not limited to just Christmas.

(I'm not sure how you define a great big email, they all look the same size on my screen wink)

Thread: Spray oil?
03/01/2023 13:45:59

The rather pleasant smelling GT85 (with PTFE!) seems quite good to me for this purpose, and is often on offer at Aldi - bought a box full last time around, which should last me a while. And, as I've mentioned before, it seems identical - at leastt in smell - to the more expensive Wurth product.
