Thread: Stringer EW Mini Lathe

Firstly, how to post pictures can be found here

Secondly, I wouldn't advise attempting any sort of restoration - not as easy as it sounds (to do it properly) and could ruin it completely.

Still showing as available for collection at my local branch, so might be worth checking near you if you want one. And there's apparently a free accessory set you can claim from Bosch too.

A diesel guy could stumble into work at 07:59 and have his train up and running at 08:00

Not really, don’t forget all the pre-departure checks.

Also providing the train or loco had not stood outside all night in mid winter and wouldn’t start.

If you're interested in diesel start-up procedures, Talking Pictures TV (Freeview channel 82) are showing the training film Driving the Train (1959) on 5th October at 05:40. Bit early, but set the recorder! They are running a season of British Transport films at the moment.

I'll be there, and I'm bringing a vaguely interested friend who, I hope, may become more interested after seeing what's what.

Oh, got my drill bits too - what's the minimum size you can handle, Noel?

Another YouTuber I found in the last week or so is Jonesey Makes - seems to be mainly constructing workshop tools from Hemingway kits, nice clear videos, good audio.

There's a listing on Ebay at the moment for The Electronics Handbook at a very reasonable Buy It Now price - almost tempted to buy it myself as an investment, looking at the others listed at very unreasonably high prices.

Thread: Looking for an electric drip feed oiler pump

No idea if it might be suitable, but I picked up a 12 volt oil pump from Lidl a while ago. Designed primarily to empty a sump via a pipe inserted down the dipstick tube.

If you have a look here, you will find that the file sketch_A.par has to be downloaded as a zip file - which could then be extracted to wherever you like. The training files that come as standard with the installation seem to default to C:\Program Files\Siemens\Solid Edge 2022\Training so that is probably as good a place as any.

It would seem best to start at the beginning of the tutorials and work completely through them in order, rather than popping in and out and choosing bits that seem to cover what you want to do. I don't think there are any short-cuts to the learning process, unfortunately.

I get the feeling that the first line of instructions - in this case "Open a part file" is more like a title and tells you what you are about to do, the subsequent lines give you the actual step by step instructions on how it is achieved.

Possibly could be better written.

Thread: How to chuck a bolt head
22/09/2022 22:23:55

I always put a couple of nuts on the bolt - same size as the head, obviously, so there's no tendency for it to tip. They don't have to be tightened up, just get the flats aligned. Of course, this depend whether the finished length you are aiming for will allow for this.

Lots available on EBay, search "watch spring pin". Oddly, you can get 360 of them for only double the price of two!

Just to digress slightly, you might find the Lancaster oval bore rifling system of interest. Bit of a write-up to be found here.

+1 for Lumiweld, not sure if the rods are still available though - I picked them up at a show many years ago. Used for various repairs on bikes and odd machinery items, always successful, if not particularly neat, there is some skill involved in getting results like the demos.

Do they create much suction? Just musing on whether one would be suitable for de-aerating epoxy resin in a suitably sealed container.

A small reservoir on the output side could be arranged to let some lubricant drain back into the workings, possibly?

Rob

Have used them for degassing epoxies - works very well indeed - also used as a vacuum source for a small (300x300mm) vac table to hold down printed circuit board material on a cnc router/drill. To preserve the lube I have the outlet exit the compressor vertically into the bottom of a brass funnel filled with open neoprene sponge - the sponge traps all oil and the oil drains back into the compressor when it is not running - seems to work ok - this specific one has about 1500 hours on it as a vac pump, and have never needed to add oil.

Thanks Joseph, the vertical outlet / draining back when not running was exactly the sort of thing I was imagining. Hadn't thought of the sponge, though, great idea.

Thanks Bill, that's the sort of thing I was thinking about. The pressure cooker is a good idea too.
