John, that rings distant bells. I noticed bags of flowers of sulphur for sale in the animal care part of my local farm supply store. <snip> I couldn't think of a sensible use for it.
Next time you are putting a handle on a file put some Flowers of Sulphur down the hole of the file handle first, then warm (not Cherry Red but hot) the file tang up THEN fit the handle. It will ensure a really good grip of the tang to the handle and you can repeat this almost indefinitely. |

I know a bit about Gas Turbines. For instance and a point some may find useful, if you test it in the spare room pointing out the window, you are going to need a new UPVC frame at the end of the test run.

Could you get a M8 tap into a 6.4mm hole regardless of material?
Well I managed eleven and a half and I was tapping 22mm deep the other day down 6.5mm holes before the (Dormer Spiral Flute) Tap snapped like a carrot. I wasn't paying attention and for some reason I had decided that 8mm course was 1.5mm pitch. These things happen. |
Thread: Anyone bought a new Myford |
28/11/2018 07:16:16 |
It's the Scot in me. I just cannot see north of 8k in a new Myford. In fairness I am looking at it from a work perspective, I have summararily dismissed something that I cannot get inch bar up the spindle, I will sit in the corner for an hour or two. It's a bit like Linux and Windows I suppose. Linux is only free if you place no value on your time OR it is a hobby. Which is where the Myfords are positioned, the hobby market. Yes, a Myford could well be useful to a Clock maker, but he isn't exactly producing a thousand off, I wouldn't have thought. As for accessories, the way I see it, most of these accessories are in lieu of other machines, such as a mill for instance or have been developed as a project in their own right, One thing is for certain, if you have a grand in an S7 you are likely to get your money back (or your heirs are) when it gets sold. Most second hand machinery has depreciated to it's current market value and stayed there. If you think you have a bargain, I am happy for you and if you think you can make a bit buying and selling machines on an "upgrade" path good luck to you. Personally I don't need the upheaval and I dread a move that is coming my way in a couple of years. It's a bit like the non stop knocking of far eastern machinery, it is built to a price. Not everyone can throw 3 or 4 grand at a used lathe complete with tooling so the mini lathe has it's place, look how many there are out there. And with every conceivable accessory available or the plans therefore. They don't depreciate that much either, not from what I can see anyway. This style of thread will always polarise people and it's the way it is, will always be. What works for one may not work for another. As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and a long bed Harrison 450 is a beautiful thing. I could probably get a Myford between centres, I must try that one day. |

Over the years I have met a good few people who rather wish they hadn't bought a Myford. I have never met anyone who regrets buying a Colchester or a Harrison. |

Ian, I think you are taking an unacceptable risk.
This sort of stuff is just patronising in the extreme. You have absolutely no clue as to how experienced or competent or even incompetent the person is but you have a view. You don't work for a teaching establishment by any chance? Crossing the roads around here is unacceptable risk given the number of potholes. |
Thread: fire warning |
09/07/2018 18:49:51 |
Well, my contribution. A good friend was awoken at four am a couple of months back (freezing cold, dark nights). His wife thought she could hear fireworks. Fromm the CCTV footage from the in Garage feed it became obvious as to the cause. A Solar Powered "Battery Conditioner" had blown one of it's diodes and fed the current back to the (plastic) solar panel. The Vintage Bike it was connected to, the one next to it, the Lathe, 60 years of tools and tooling and the car were a total loss. Garage needed demolishing too. Thankfully it was a stand alone building. I no longer leave any battery chargers connected overnight. |

Well I would concede that we all get it wrong sometimes. My grammar is not perfect. But "Lathing"? I think we can all agree on that one! |
Thread: Paint for Colchester Lathe |
21/05/2018 08:43:11 |
These Enamel paints such as the Paragon and Tractol ranges are designed to brush out as the Coach Enamels of old. Spraying gives good results but it is unnecessary, brushing gives depth. The only problem nowadays is finding good brushes at the right price. Surprisingly to me, rollers work well too. |

Thread: Pickling acid |
08/04/2018 21:07:07 |
Just to add to your woes, this from the Government Press Release today with regard to their tackling violence and knife crime (yes I know): The Home Office has also added sulphuric acid to the list of regulated explosives precursors that come under the Poisons Act 1972. This will mean that members of the public will require a licence to acquire, possess and use the substance.

Thread: Harrison M300 Thread Dial Indicator (Imperial) |

The Harrison M300 series was first manufactured in 1971, I think Tony's site at lathes.co.uk will confirm this. For spare parts, contact the 600 group who are Harrison HERE ( http://www.600uk.com/products/harrison-centre-lathes/) first as they might be cheaper than you think. Might be eye watering too, but best ask. It always amuses me when I see genuine second hand M300 Fixed Steadies go for sale on ebay for three or four hundred quid. They are £270 brand new from Harrison.

Quad electrostatics were excellent. They had diaphragms with a large area and very small excursion but needed a big room as they had to be sited well away from a wall for best results. My Quad ESL57's still are, excellent that is. They knock most everything else into a cocked hat. Just don't overdrive them playing Heavy Rock, there is no real need anyway as they are the only speaker I have found that the word "immersive" really applies to. You just need to be selective as to which amp you use to drive them. The most asinine comment I ever read on any forum anywhere with regard to "Hi-Fi" was a moderator claiming he could tell the difference in the positioning of the fuse in the supply cable to an amplifier by ear alone. It pretty much did for me with Hi-Fi and the bullshit surrounding some of the "accessories". I remember reading about one of Peter Walker's demonstrations (he of QUAD fame) when he discovered he had forgotten the mains lead and went over to a power tool manufacturer's outlet and bought a length of Electric Lawnmower cable to connect the Amps up with. Works for me. |

perhaps one of them can tell us the exact value of the term "load" in the collective noun "a load of testicles". Well, that isnt straightforward either. Is this a single load or a double load? Bearing in mind my old pal Brian had three testicles, there is always a variable. |

Bondhus are the original inventors of the ball head Allen key. There warrenty is very good but maybe only in the states. PB Swiss are probably the best you can buy now but certainly the most expensive, https://www.onlyqualitytools.com/catalog2/PB_Swiss_Tools/PB_212.LK_Ti.html |
