Thread: Lathe newbie in East Midlands
01/05/2020 21:21:52

Welcome!

Thread: New members
01/05/2020 21:20:39

A very warm welcome. I've just made the jump to mill ownership myself and the improvements over a vertical slide are well worth it, if only for the reduced hassle!

Welcome.

Thread: Stuart Turner D10
24/04/2020 22:11:39

Any chilled castings in that lot? I don't know what Stuart have been doing but every single person (literally, everyone in my club!) who has built a recent Stuart engine has struggled with hard parts of the castings.

Thread: Shiny Chrome type paint
20/04/2020 15:39:39

Fairy Huntsman? Very nice.

When my son paints models with his airbrush, such as MIG 17 or Lightning, he undercoats the silver with black as apparently this makes it more realistic.

Thread: 540 Motor as a generator
17/04/2020 20:52:08

To revive this thread, I finally got around to seeing what a 540 would put out. Unloaded at 1000rpm I saw 2.8v. Running in the opposite direct got a negligable difference.

I stlll plan to build a generator, or rather, some period looking mounts to make the generator look like an old school generating plant.

Thread: Homemade Lathe Tools
06/04/2020 20:10:16

What a great idea for a thread. I don't have a photo handy but my first big lathe tool project (I'm a novice) was a between centres boring bar for making my Britannia cylinder bores as parallel as I could. I'm sure it will come in useful for any other locomotives I make, but otherwise is probably destined to live in a draw!

Thread: Small drill bit in large drill press?
02/04/2020 21:49:13

I agree with pgk pgk (and by defininition Bob).

To "clock" the chuck you can spin it up and check to see how much it visually wobbles, stop the drill, turn it a few degrees and see if the wobble gets better or worse, then keep moving it in the direction that improves it until you have to go back again. Smaller chucks are seldom very accurate but it will help to get things a little better.

Thread: Sieg Mill from ArcEurotrade
02/04/2020 15:33:24

Just to close the loop:

My mill has been delivered and finally bolted down (it arrived long before I had the space cleared for it!).

The quality seems very good, my only complaint was that the DRO didn't work at first; removing the battery, wiping it clean of oil and refitting it soon sorted that. It seems to be a fine machine, and the starter set I purchased with it (at additional cost) really does have some excellent quality bits in to get you started. Really pleased with the machine and the service received.

Thanks,

Jon.

Thread: Academia.edu
02/04/2020 15:30:13

I joined academia.edu to read some papers a friend had written on the cold war (bunkers and suchlike). I wish I hadn't, they bombard me with spam. Unsubscribing has had no effect so they are consigned to the blocked filter now.

I wonder if thats the same Charlie Brown I knew from ETPS? I suspect there are many "Charlie" Browns! This one was primarily Rotary wing I think, he was CO at the time.

Thread: James Scooter
27/03/2020 09:24:31

Ignore the likes of JA. "Rubbish" or not, it's all worthy of restoration or forum's like this wouldn't even exist.

JA, would you walk up to a proud owner at a show and tell them their pride and joy was rubbish or only behind the safety of a forum? I suspect and hope you wouldn't be so crass.

I had a look through my James paperwork but couldn't find anything about the scooters, sorry.

Thread: Websites for the Bored
25/03/2020 18:00:17

I'm lucky enough to have visited that museum in Prague and its fantastic. Highly recommended.

Thread: My First Stationary Engine
15/03/2020 19:17:09

Not only is that engine very beautiful to look at, it sounds like the Jetson's car. smiley

Thread: Ebay deleted listings
15/03/2020 19:10:34

I suspect people are just having a laugh. Which with all these things, assuming you are doing everything else right, is probably the best thing to do.

Thread: Aircraft General Discussion
13/03/2020 21:25:44

My late grandfather always claimed he first heard a sonic boom in the 1940s. When pressed he would admit it was the blade tips of the Harvard.

Thread: Sieg Mill from ArcEurotrade
12/03/2020 18:04:09

Fair enough, order placed.

12/03/2020 16:57:20

After a lot of deliberation I think I'm probably going to go for a Sieg mill from ArcEurotrade, does anyone know if they have sales or special offers? I'm not in a screaming rush but I'll happily wait if I'm likely to save a few pennies (it's a huge purchase for me).

Cheers,

Jon.

Thread: What sort of things DO NOT inspire you
23/02/2020 10:44:57

Getting embroiled in pettiness when this hobby is about enjoying what we do. I love to learn about new skills, and get constantly annoyed with how slowly I seem to pick them up myself. I'm very lucky that my local MES is so supportive and patient!

Basically anything that strips the enjoyment out of what is supposed to be fun. Not many of us are lucky enough to do this full time. I'm 30 years off of retirement but I'd love to have the time to do these things before my eyes get totally knackered.

Thread: Recovering from disaster
20/02/2020 12:05:42

Maybe its worth getting an agreed value on some items. How can you explain that a 50 year old lathe isn't just old junk to someone with no interest to whom you are just one of 100 calls a day?

Thread: Brian's 1" Minnie Traction Engine
17/02/2020 23:27:18

I would imagine not; there isn't any pressure there.
