A very encouraging and supportive member of the forum. We are poorer for his passing. My sincere condolences.

Thread: recent power outage in Medway
21/02/2022 08:33:14

Unrelated, but I live in the other Gillingham. No matter how many times I write "DORSET NOT KENT!" on ebay auctions, I still get people grumpily telling me that I should have told them the items I am selling are in the "other" Gillingham.

You can still buy new calor gas SuperSer style portable gas heaters, very useful for spot heat and the bottle lasts longer than I expected. I saved a few quid by getting hold of an empty bottle secondhand which I was then able to trade for a new full one from the agent. I'm sure someone will tell me its illegal and I'm going to hell.

The SEL engine is a Major as its the twin cylinder.

The Stuart boiler you can narrow down by flipping it over and counting the water tubes.

I think the vertical boiler is a bing but could be wrong.

Welcome Martin, it's certainly a very useful place.

Welcome Trevor, what a lovely place to live. I have a Seig mill and have been very happy with it so far. I don't know how I did without one.

The other workshop tool I can't believe I survived for so long without... a Proxxon linisher. I should have bought one years ago.

Thread: Alternatives to Loctite
19/02/2022 17:20:31

When at Boeing we used to use Loctite 2222 (I think) which when I looked it up (to compare to 222) is 222 but with better certification... I think they were able to trace every part of the manufacturing process, with the associated increase in price. But as mentioned, sometimes the price is justified.

Thread: Here's an interesting one

My work internet blocks that as being a "Very recently made website" and therefore a potential security risk.

Thread: Hello from North Yorkshire

Welcome Andy, I've had a few similar hobbies but none as satisfying as model engineering. I'm not very good but that doesn't affect my enjoyment!

Stuart kits are a nice starting point but even better making a simple oscillating engine from bar stock.

Another vote here for the Blondihacks videos on youtube, She is upfront when she makes mistakes which is refreshing, is quite mindful of safety and has an approachable style.

sometimes our model engineering society runs courses based on demand (we are in West Wiltshire, Westbury), however there is always someone around happy to give hints and tips.

Best of luck

Thread: Hello from Wiltshire

Hello Nigel, I'm just up the road, before Christmas I popped to the ESR with a view to helping out with their narrow gauge railway (I currently run my 3.5" and 5" locomotives at the West Wilts Model Engineering Society but figured I might be able to help on the 7.25" line there).

Maybe I'll see you around there at some point. In the meantime, welcome.

Jon

This says its for the 65-171R which I think is different unless its just the modern part number, I can't seem to find anything closer.

I tried to watch it but have obviously been a bit too eager; it still says processing. Just coming off my night shift so I'll try again later.

Thread: What happened to factory rejects?
09/02/2022 23:19:33

That being said, the companies I have worked for (admittedly defense not consumer products) were very heavily involved in a "Right first time", "measure twice cut once" style quality system to reduce defective items. Obviously that was safety driven rather than profit driven but it did have a measurable improvement on the amount of rejected tasks or components.

Thread: A Great Machinist

I found it interesting that he was using a vernier caliper. With genuinely no offence to those who still prefer them to digital calipers (my brain doesn't work fast enough to use them efficiently and my eyesight doesn't help, so I default to digital for ease if nothing else) it certainly makes sense to use a bit of kit that doesn't require a battery every few months.

Thread: I am getting shorter - how about you.
08/02/2022 20:23:35

I lost my leg quite a few years back and up until that point had always walked in a very hunched and twisted manner (I was in my late twenties, maybe early thirties). Upon walking on my prosthetic for the first time I was able to walk straight and taller for the first time in my life. People didn't recognise me, I'm sure at least partially because I'd suddenly gained height!

A friend lost his legs to an IED and had always been quite short.... however if you get to chose the length of both your legs apparently there is a bit of latitude and you can elect to be a little taller if you like.... I think he rather pushed the boundaries though!

Thread: You meet the nicest people with a Cowells
03/02/2022 06:24:01

Before I buy a car I used to scour forums to check for common faults, or more often how many faults you can expect (and if they are serious or just niggles).

What I soon came to realise is that people are more vocal about things that don't work than they are about things that quietly get on with the job in hand with no issues. IPeople don't join the car forums to have a rant at how well its all going... maybe its a similar principle. I confess I don't know anything about Cowells equipment.
