I followed Keith Appleton's advice of string initially held in place with cycanoacrylate, then painted with white (or off-white) enamel. Seems ok.

How on earth did he snap it!

I wonder if the cleaner solution would be to get another piece of carbon fibre and replace the shaft complete? Rods are easily found, used in everything from Model RC Aircrft and and Fishing rods as metioned before.

I personally think it would make for a great article.

You mentioned in an earlier post you were thinking about adding castor oil to the fuel, did you do that in the end?

But wouldn't deliberately saying it wrong to fit our narrative be worse? Especially as the original is three or four hundred years old and predates any childrens variant of it by a few centuries.

E5 petrol (the older stuff) is 5% ethanol. E10 (the new stuff) is 10% ethanol. The ethanol isn't a new addition, the quantity has just increased. As a result you may be getting it twice as bad with the new stuff, but it isn't a new problem if the ethanol genuinely is the issue.

I'm with Callum. Your opinions do count, but yours have equal value to the other views, and some are struggling to adapt to that.

Visible on the small plate is PATT 5001. I wonder if it is a regulation, manufacturer or similar?

EDIT I've since read it most likely means pattern, as in the design something is made too, especially with regards to MoD equipment.

They are mentioned in passing here, specifically spark gap condensors, which could make sense..

As I understand it the frame formed storage of some of the pressurised gases.

I think Philips donated the generators to schools; I'd love to get my hands on one one day. That is obviously a visual tool to demonstrate the operation.

My grandfather made stirling engines intending to use them to power irrigation pumps in africa, but it never came to anything.

I did laugh at the Kase slice! It has a lovely finish for a workshop tool, I seldom have the patience.

My nefarious purpose is for cleaning off Dykem Blue; after some advice on this forum I purchased Acetone via ebay recently (almost certainly over the going rate). It works very well indeed.

I suspect there will be no difference to the accuracy, but it will make your working environment smelly and is not something you want over your hands any length of time. I believe its a bit of an old school thing in the states to wipe your tools over with it, but there are far nicer, less smelly and less toxic things you could be using.

If a film of kero is affecting accuracy then you are working to a much finer tolerance than I!

I wonder what the proportions of each facet of the hobby this forum supports. I had always supposed that Live Steam was the most popular, but as you say the most recent list of forum posts suggests that isn't the case.

My point is still valid. The content of your reply might be but it rather gets lost in the noise.

Thank you both. I've ordered something that is rated high enough for superheated steam. I do use the other forum quite heavily but can only access this one during my work day as the other is blocked.

I guess that answers that! I'll look into other alternatives. It just seems a very over complex design compared to my other locomotive.

I just linked to a Rabone Chesterman 49, as you mentioned they are sold out I located a second hand one.
