Thread: Drilling holes in tubing stainless
02/11/2020 10:12:23

Thanks for that ive purchased some 3mm stub drills.

I am also looking at getting a rotabroach that looks ideal as drilling large holes over 8mm is a nightmare with a bench drill.

Also would a v block help ive looked at warco and Chester drills but I'm worries

The table does not swivel to allow drilling opposite the handle.

Thread: Problem With Corrosion Of Stainless Steel
10/03/2018 21:34:47

I make moulds out of off cuts of stainless tube and i have found contact with fairy liquid which i use to stop the silicon sticking makes the stainless rust like mad 304 and even 316 gets rust spots.

I have also found that even 316 rusts where its been worked on cut drilled etc mostly

i have the die grinder jig for setting all the angles but do not have a surface grinder i often wonder if i could maybe touch them up by rubing a stone accross the top whilst there in the jig

Thread: turning oilon platic rod
31/01/2018 21:02:31

i was taking a light cut on some oilon plastic rod when all off a sudden the tool seemed to grab and slice right through as the wheel span and the tool jammed into the chuck .

Is it commen practice to lock the saddle and use the gears to take the cuts so this cant happen never happened before.

the plastic did have a label stuck to it i thought it would not matter and it would just come off as i cut into it.

luckily i hit the clutch fast so no damage

Solder sucker.

Or does the 'rework gun' do that?

Or don't you make mistakes? devillaugh

Solder sucker in at number 10 and we lose the mini-clip leads

copper wick chemtronics was one of my favourites to remove old solder and if your removing components look at the low melt solders chip quick is deadly for removing the chips that have plenty of legs on them this is one topic i can help with did bga and reworking and all kind of electrical repairs down to component level

few years ago i was a wizz at soldering and de soldering all kinds of components even re balling bga chips down to 0.3mm solder balls, dry joints was a nightmare on the xbox 360 RROD
Thread: Some questions about die head chasers
03/01/2018 22:21:28

I guess if you can salvage chasers from mixed sets and set them up in the jig and grind with a surface grinder all will be good as you have then created a matching set so long as the grinder takes a skim off all the chasers correct me if i am wrong please.

Thread: coventry die head m8 1.25 1/2"
31/12/2017 11:25:17

cheers yes i do use the lever but i might try taking lesser cuts 1st pass .my chasers are not the correct rake for stainless steel so might be hard on them i believe i should use am5 or as but i am just using the standard s20

30/12/2017 22:01:52
i have also changed the chasers for what look like sharper ones
30/12/2017 22:01:14
i use a chamfer tool to cut a neat chamfer on the end of the bar . I think maybe next time i will cut a lighter cut on the first pass then re adjust for a final cut see how that works out
27/12/2017 18:15:45

I thread a lot of 8mm stainless 316 did a bar today and i noticed the 1st cm of the thread is just mashed like its been ground down the nut just slips over the end . I had to cut this off and re cut a chamfer on the thread afterwards is this because maybe chasers are not sharp enough cant figure out whats gone wrong.

the rest of the thread was ok just that 1cm was no good almost like a mm had been turned off the end

thanks

For the one in the drawing above to work as a facing tool it needs the top rake in the opposite direction to the R/H Turning tool you opened the thread with.

The carbide tips have rake in both directions that is why you have had good results using the insert in a R/H holder.

Ahhhhh now i get it

Luglord, how much material do you have sticking out of the chuck and what sort of dia are you working on, that pic of the white plastic being machined may have too much projection.

i make bushes about an inch long uhwmpe 28mm OD - 25mm OD I kind of had a thought today as i have wastage each time i make a bush so in the future i am going to try cutting just over an inch long and facing off with only a very small amount sticking out of the chuck then drill a hole all the way through and turn it down on an 8mm rod as i drill an 8mm hole using the rod as a mandrel.

with uhwmpe too much coming out of the chuck is always a risky process facing off .

I have best results using the aluminium insert on the facing tool i have but just experimenting grinding different tools its tricky as some experts on plastic machining say zero rake angles then some say plenty of rake .

As mentioned earlier i do know the difference between left and right tools i always use a right hand facing tool I think there was some confusion on how i face a part off

27/11/2017 22:35:56

Ive basically learn to use a lathe machining uhwmpe and stainless 316 not the best to learn on , Ive found hdpe acetel and delrin are easy to machine but uhwmpe is not very forgiving one mistake and it all goes wrong pulls out of the chuck as so slippy tools will dive in pulling it out of the chuck as well.No swarf sometimes facing you just get one big lump of goo forming .
