Pilot with coated short stub drills as well, its worth buying quality drills for piloting as they are only a bit more expensive than no-name drills for 3mm diameter but will make drilling a lot easier overall. I used to supply the pipe fitters where I worked with these RS 3mm drill for 316L stainless steel pipes. The other thing the pipe fitters I supported used were Rotabroach mini cutters but they are an expensive option if you are not making a lot of holes of the same size that also match what is available (round figure mm sizes). They were good for use in a hand drill, drill the 3mm pilot hole and the 3mm pin in the Rotabroach arbor slipped in nicely and prevented the hole wandering.
