A drill with gear driven power feed would be most helpful for stainless, you need to keep cutting to avoid work hardening. Pilot with coated short stub drills as well, its worth buying quality drills for piloting as they are only a bit more expensive than no-name drills for 3mm diameter but will make drilling a lot easier overall. I used to supply the pipe fitters where I worked with these RS 3mm drill for 316L stainless steel pipes. The other thing the pipe fitters I supported used were Rotabroach mini cutters but they are an expensive option if you are not making a lot of holes of the same size that also match what is available (round figure mm sizes). They were good for use in a hand drill, drill the 3mm pilot hole and the 3mm pin in the Rotabroach arbor slipped in nicely and prevented the hole wandering.

Thanks for that ive purchased some 3mm stub drills.

I am also looking at getting a rotabroach that looks ideal as drilling large holes over 8mm is a nightmare with a bench drill.
