Thread: Bandsaws and their blades |
27/10/2017 23:27:49 |
I have tried it dry, I have tried wiping the wheels and the blade, maybe I should get some Gunk and wash it out? Haven't tried that... |
27/10/2017 22:58:46 |
I can't keep it dry and clean, it has a suds pump that keeps it wet and greasy

John Pitkin located and printed. I have a new blade. Next time I press the big go button on my CNC I will see how far I can get down his list before I reach the first compulsory shopping opportunity

The idler wheel tilts for tracking and slides for tension. It runs wonderfully with the back open, everything is hunky dory until some time after the cut starts then blammo, the blade stops moving and then it come off in short order. I look at the greasy mess that is the wheels and they seem to be crying out for, do you remember that belt compound you put on a flat belt to make it grip? Something like that. If there is a blow by blow set up check list then I'll give it a go but I am not hopeful.

I have a band saw, like this one, different make, that drives me to distraction. I have tried everything I can think of but the blade still comes off There just doesn't seem to be any grip on the big wheels. Are they supposed to be bare metal? I have heard a rumour of polyurethane tires, is it true? OTOH I suspect the bod who sold it to me had the same problem because it was peculiarly cheap. It may also be cursed having already cut me to the bone I have a plan to replace all the ball races that guide the blade but I have scant hopes of success |
Thread: Turbocad copy in place missing |

Correct, I bought a Plug In |

It was a long time ago

For drawing I had AutoCAD. You might think that after that I would have gone for anything that would do a reasonable 3D surface but the thing that drew me to TurboCAD was that it would output a tool path. I eventually wrote my own software to cut 2.5D from AutoCAD. I give lines, arcs and circles elevation and thickness then stack 'em up. I then drew in 3D with Alibre design for 3D printing. I am now making the switch to Fusion360 because it will output a toolpath. I know I have been here before but hey, hope springs eternal |
20/10/2017 22:06:02 |
I looked at TurboCAD, think I bought a copy. IIRC the tool path was parallel XY lines rather than following tidemarks so I gave up on it PDQ. They still send me upgrade offers which I ignore. Has it improved? |
Thread: What Did You Do Today (2017) |

I think everyone has a Pig sty level, a level of mess where they have to stop and tidy up. My wife's pig sty threshold is very low compared to mine, so she gets to do all the tidying up.

the swarf that gets embedded in the soles and ends up all over the house. The domestic manager hadn't twigged yet but it would be only a matter of time
There was a rumour that swarf sinks in to the pile of the carpet and then saws it gently apart. I have never given this notion any credence, I have certainly never bothered to mention it to her indoors. But Muzzer's workshop is so tidy there is no swarf, I can only think he is using CNC. If you don't have to turn the handles there is very little to do apart from make tea and tidy up. |

Well one of them worked. Maybe you need to stand a bit closer |

IIRC our last blue moon was caused by forest fires in Canada, that would be worth a photo |

Distinctly weird, dark inside but outside is strangely clear, as if I was wearing them yellow driving glasses. Where will it all end? |

OTOH I had someone telling me that the brass barrel on my blunderbuss would have age hardened after 230 years, be all crystalline and just about to explode killing everyone within a 50 yard radius and yet, I am still here |
Thread: Yuriy's Toys DRO Scales |

Robin - I have no idea why you found the magnetic scales to be jittery, but I'd have thought that was more a function of the interface than the scales themselves. It is very easy to check, assuming you have an oscilloscope. |
15/10/2017 12:07:19 |
I played with DRO's, the magnetic scales had a terrible jitter even when I buffered them as close as possible. I had to take a series of readings and average them out. Maybe they have improved, but if I ever wanted them I would probably go for the glass. |
Thread: cutting oils |
14/10/2017 12:28:54 |
In the suds pump on my mill I use whatever soluble oil is cheapest. Sometimes I use a brush in a tin of paraffin for cast iron even though I was taught to cut it dry. For drilling, generous blobs from a squeezy bottle of Rocol RTD |
Thread: help wanted for mechanical butterfly making |
14/10/2017 12:14:31 |
This isn't a butterfly, it's a moth. Do the wings have to move in unison? What action causes them to open? If it is a straight pull, what do you pull against? |
