Thread: Lathe DRO |

Ian P: I have no idea, I saw "8 Type Live Center Morse Turning Revolving Bearing MT2 MT3 Taper Triple" on e-Bay for £17.35 and took a wild guess. I meant the ones with the spindly nose that doesn't get in the way so much |

I see the prices of the triple angle revolving centres are coming down at last. A credible alternative to the half dead centre? Perhaps an answer to the insert threading tool, set at 30 degrees, forcing a risky top slide extension below the chuck Edit: Replacement picture, I got rid of most of the overhang but the tailstock is all the way out and the toolpost is blocking all but the fanciest of revolving centres... JasonB: Extending to the chuck is easy. The question is, can you extend the centre slightly past the tool tip ready to make that between centre cut and still have good support on the tailstock barrel? ChrisB: My saddle started hitting the feed clutch barrel as soon as I removed the clock spring from the lead screw. Luckily it hits an unused part of the split nut T slot so I can relieve it without emptying the oil from the apron. |

My toolpost is much too wide. See how the top slide is angled back, but the tailstock still only has 1 cm extension left to go. 'tis a puzzlement. |

My DRO shows X for saddle and Z for cross slide, but to change or set Z I have to press the Y buttons. I think they were as confused as me. When I first had it I mixed up the X and Y plugs causing weird readings because the Z is a 5 micron scale while the X is a 1 micron scale. Nothing about that in the manual. I rang up and asked how to get into the settings and change it but they didn't seem to know or didn't want to tell me. The answer was to hold down the ENTER key while turning it on at the plug. Where the cross slide DRO is fitted it removes 30mm travel from the tailstock which is fast running out of travel on the graduated part, whatever that calls itself. The nose? It cannot stay there, I am working on moving it. |

Those Americans cast folded leaf springs using the lost wax method, Bolek the wheel-lock maker cuts his from lorry leaf springs, Peter Dyson sells bars of spring steel which I have had some success with |
Thread: Blast-pipe - Chimney Proportions |

If I have this right, the blast gets it moving and steam comes out the top, Then the blast stops suddenly but the motion continues drawing air through the fire tubes and smoke comes out the top. Surely the perfect length and diameter of pipe depends on the frequency of the puff, Didn't the old boys put in different lengths side by side to keep it drawing fast and slow?

Thread: What Did You Do Today 2021 |

Trying to make zero-backlash ball nuts by springing pairs with Belleville washers. Bought 4 spare nuts and none of them were smooth running. Today I changed the balls and they are now quite delightful. 3/32" = 2.381mm. Old balls measure 2.39mm. New balls measure 2.37mm. Digimatic caliper resolves 0.01mm. Micrometer coming. Bought a Starret. Been watching too much TubalCain I can only suppose that they had a bunch of nuts fitted with oversize balls to stop folk moaning about the backlash. When they found they were crap they sold them to me without screws. I can get 200kgf before it gives, easy peasy. Probably enough for milling, so hard to visualize. Two fat ladies? Thread: Coat Hanger wire? |
12/02/2021 10:48:05 |
Most excellent. I just bought 5kg of galvanised 3mm fencing wire for £24 with free shipping off that auction site I need about a foot but I am sure the other 4.99kg will eventually come in handy. Being galvanised it can live in the shed. Her coat hangers are safe at last. |
Thread: Bad finish on BMS |

There was a time when the Chinese bucket shops advertised everything as High Carbon Steel because it sounded good. Unfortunately, poor quality control made it synonymous with shattering under load. Now they call everything carbide. Carbide suggests Tungsten Carbide but it could also refer to iron carbide, aka high carbon steel. Call me Mr Suspicious. Fortunately, this does not keep me awake at night |
Thread: Chester digital display-i200 |

It is plugged in to the socket marked Y on the back. To change the Z co-ordinate I press the button marked Y. I had to change the direction of Y to fix Z. I think it is Y |
17/01/2021 16:14:06 |
So it shows X and Z rather than X and Y, plus diameters decrease as you wind the tool out. Chester don't know how to set it, they just tell you that you cannot improve on perfection and would be foolish to try... Chinese: "In the time frame of startup screen, Press the Enter key to enter the system parameter setting, as shown in Figure 6.1" Translation: Hold down the Enter button while switching on using the rocker switch on the back. (The on off key on the front is not enough). Only one Figure is labelled as a Figure and that is 2.1 use that. Changing "Direct" for Y fixes the Diameters and radii, but they still show as Z. I tried changing I_M to NONE but it was not impressed. Has anyone been here before? Any ideas? |

My ancient milling machines both run on Z80 assembler. My new one will make the leap to 32 bits. I have written the point to point 4 axis interrupt part. Next comes the SDIO card as I go from 25kb memory to 16Gb. Freaky |

Some might wonder how denizens of a thin habitable layer, sandwiched between boiling magma and a zero degree Kelvin void could want for energy. Others might wonder how you get to be an environmental reporter when you obviously have less scientific understanding that my cat Mopsy. |

I have the ancient UP Plus 2, an all-steel affair that can be moved around whilst printing without upset. Favourite prints are my litter picker, featuring a double-sided rack, and the catch which holds the kitchen door open. |
