The problem with metric is that third digit on the DRO or digi-caliper. +1
You think that's bad; whenever I try to work out anything using Pi I have to give up after just a few hundred decimal places. I feel your pain. Unlike Gerber, AutoCAD defines an arc by angles rather than by end points, Stray from the cardinals and nothing quite fits |

The problem with metric is that third digit on the DRO or digi-caliper. The hours I spend setting it to perfection on the cross slide only to see it blasted out of existence the moment tool tip meets steel. Come back thou, all is forgiven |

Yesterday I turned off everything in the workshop, shut down my computers and went with my son and my granddaughter, aged 6, to Chessington World of Adventures where I spent lots of money. Best day ever |
Thread: How to post lithium batteries? |
10/09/2021 15:26:00 |
You can send new lithium batteries fitted in new Chinese goodies. However sending them back would be a different kettle of fish. Do I want my new Chinese goodies in the same van/lorry/aeroplane as your duff Chinese goodies that may have failed because they were so cheap they had to skimp on the battery protection circuit? |

I use a 1/4 hp suds pump and flow rate is not a problem. I return the suds to the tank via a filter bag designed for straining carp pooh out of a koi pond. That keeps the flow restriction tap clear. |

Also sold motorised as the Tormach PSG-612. Loved the video so I bought the cheap one I replaced the "hawser", connecting the grinder to its counterbalance weight, with a 6mm chain. I removed the strangely imprecise, right angle Z handle and fitted a 6mm ball screw where it used to be. I love the idea that after diamond dressing the wheel you know its exact height above the table. I want to motorise Z, as well as X and Y, but it is proving tricky. |

Thread: Paypal payment delay |
01/08/2021 13:12:07 |
It used to be easy to refund on PayPal because they refunded their fee and I refunded the rest. Then they changed the rules and stopped refunding their bit. Didn't stop the seller from wanting 100% and not one penny piece less though. Either this seller is being generous or he has a much better deal from PayPal than I do. Probably the latter, I am fairly convinced my purpose in life is to fund other folks dodgy get rich quick schemes

Thread: Leveling machines |

I bought a cheap Chinese Engineer's level. Luckily it was very easy to fix when I discovered that the rubber bungs at either end were removable. The pivot hole drilled through one end of the bubble assembly was hopelessly cock-eyed and it was instead supported by a bent wedge-thing crudely formed from a strip of Chinesium. I removed the wedge-thing, drilled a new pivot hole through the other end and turned the assembly around. I then had a quality tool at a bargain basement price, assuming you don't look at the non-adjustable crosswise bubble that is |

I knew nothing about bench grinders so I typed, "Which bench grinder?" into Google and then bought a Metabo DS200. 's loverly. |

I just cannot get on with the crappy lead free stuff. I was changing a lot of optics. By some miracle I always seemed to guess correctly as to whether it was the photodiode or the LED that had failed. Then I realised I wasn't changing the optic, I was changing the solder and always at the button cell end. One leaky battery and the solder joint died. Still looked okay it just didn't conduct |
Thread: Best soldering iron for electronics |
19/07/2021 10:24:46 |
I do a lot of soldering. Eventually, I got fed up with Chinese 852's. It's nice to have the hot air nozzle but the irons were very hit and miss on temperature and once a pad boils off the board it is nigh on impossible to put it back. I eventually returned to the fold and got me the reasonably priced Weller WE1010 and have never looked back. It features a timer so it is immune to being left on accidentally overnight. |

Thread: working Damascus steel |
14/07/2021 11:36:42 |
The blacksmith at Rodmell forge told me that when steel was in short supply due to WW2 the shepherds would bring him old shotgun barrels to be made into the Sussex leg crook. When he tried to reduce the diameter on Damascus barrels they came unwound. It was never actually welded. Similarly, if you wind a Damascus barrel then rifle it, you are cutting across the grain of the Damascus and the rifling has no strength. A rifled Damascus barre starts with a tape wound core. I have one of the original Liege Damascus shotgun barrel blanks Peter Dyson was selling off. It has a beautiful loopy pattern. Wonder if he has any left. |

EN1A on the smaller gears, Larger one was more likely EN3, blunted a lot faster than say the £20 ea RDG ones. Think they were MOD0.5 and about £5 each My goodness, your gear pictures make me even more determined to cut involute teeth. What is wrong with me? |

So many things to buy and my mill in pieces, whatever next? |
12/07/2021 12:26:34 |
I shall hope for 16DP then, sounds better than MOD1 already. What material were you cutting to blunt HSS? Do you think they might be high carbon steel dressed up as lamb? |
12/07/2021 11:59:12 |
Did I really just buy a set of M1 involute gear cutters for £34.49 on offer from Amazon with free shipping and delivery in 3 weeks? Perhaps I imagined it. I couldn't help myself. It was an involuntary burst of mouse clicking and all over before I knew what was happening. I mean, what's the worst that can happen? 8Pcs Involute Gear Milling Cutter High Speed Steel Cutting Tools Set Machine Tool Accessories 14.5° Pressure Angle 55mm 22mm |
