Thread: Hexagonal Socket Drive

Some sets of sockets at the cheaper end of the scale had an Allen key instead of a ratchet, the set I have is also Whitworth.

Well, I collect receipts. I have many thousand of the damn things stuffed and scattered throughout my van and every now and again they find their way into a biscuit tin for safer storage. This hobby is very prevalent among the self employed I have found.

Thread: Ebay 'photos'
07/06/2019 12:54:42

Probably because the vendors of some of the machines and equipment on E-bay are merely disposing of a deceased loved ones workshop and don't necessarily know what important features/dimensions/ware points &c a potential buyer would like to be made aware of.

For some years now when free hand grinding steels containing Tungsten an extraction system has been mandatory (in most parts) of industry due to the possible inhalation of radio active Tungsten.

when i did my trade we had to chisel a block to within 5 thou 3/4 inch square by 3 inch long and hand file the three sides flat within a thou. time no object and thumb on left hand red and blue.

Warwick.

Ditto. It was called 'chipping the block' and done behind chipping screens to avoid injury to the lad on the bench opposite. No eye protection was given them day, makes my hair stand on end now.

Chipping chisels were ground slightly convex by a rolling action against the grindstone.

If you are regularly going to be cutting 40mm &c solid section why not look at an Evolution (Circular TCT) Saw from Screwfix/b&q?

I have one in my van for site work and I would recommend it.

Thread: What do YOU call it?
22/05/2019 17:50:59

I've been thinking about a product that I'd like to run past 'The Dragons'. The kit I have in mind consists of :-

1 x pre soiled overall,

1 x bottle synthetic sweat, (incl. small amount of synthetic blood for sympathy purposes)

1 x stick on oil smudges,

1 x 'Sounds Busy' CD 4 hours long (various engineering sounds - machinery, hammering, industrial swearing &c)

This package could be used when a chap just wants a contemplative few hours to him self without mucking up any machinery or breaking sweat and thus avoid any accusations of 'hiding in the workshop'

Thread: stamford show vandals

Posted by Neil Wyatt on 20/05/2019 10:42:55:

This is a particularly offensive act because we can all empathise with the horror and despair of the people whose work has been destroyed.

It's easy to forget worse crimes happen, because this is so close to our own interests.

We know nothing about the perpetrators and why they did it, or what else they have or have not done. The punishment should be sufficient to show others that such behaviour won't be tolerated by our society, but ultimately this was 'damage to property' and as such it carries a maximum sentence of ten years. If first offenders and/or young teenagers the sentence is likely to be less as it will be proportionate to acts like physical assault, theft or sexual assault.

As Mike says the real aim needs to be making sure this doesn't turn into the start of a criminal career for the idiots who did it. They might have lists of ASBOs as long as your arm, or more likely they may be idiots who started with a prank and it got out of control. They may not all be equally culpable, and they may have mental health issues. It's easy to be angry; if someone destroyed my models I would be angry but I'd be far angrier if some assaulted a loved one.

Mostly, I hope the club are able to give victim statements, and given support beyond just a pile of cash.

I suspect this act is not unrelated to the decline in services for young people that also appears to be influencing violent crime in this age group. The real question isn't 'what do we do with the offenders?' but 'what does this tell us about our society?'

Neil

Very cogently put Neil. I often wonder how people who have lost loved ones to knife crime &c view our reaction to what is only 'criminal damage' to, all be it, someones pride and joy.

Because we as a group are creative people we tend to firstly identify with then over react to such events, that is not to denigrate the Stamford modelers situation in the way.

But, the "Hanging is too good for them" side of the debate need to take stock and think well on such pronouncements.

Thread: Ever have one of those days..?
15/05/2019 17:59:34
Posted by Ron Laden on 15/05/2019 09:37:32:

Its not 10.00am yet and my morning has not gone well.

My 30 year old Digimatic vernier has started to lose its display, I,ve cleaned the contacts and fitted a new battery but its still playing up, I hope its not on the way out, I,m quite attached to it..

I then dropped my dial gauge onto the concrete floor which has not done it any good at all its now sticking, knackered I guess.

Then to top it all I have cut a slither off the end of my finger with a Stanley knife..

I dont think its a day for the workshop...sad

These thing come in threes I've found (having had many 'triplets' myself) so you can now rest assured in the certainty of an accident/bad fortune free period. My advise would be to get back in the workshop and make the best of the time till the next bout. Oh! also do the lottery this week - can't fail to win something.

it's just a shame that for most of us we have to have 1 foot in a coffin to have something like that.......

oh, and a smaller shed........hahaha.....

said it before, when my turn comes all my machines will be gifted to a young person who I'll help train....

just to set him up for life......

It's been noted before and very apparent to me on Saturday at the Doncaster Show, that the vast majority of 'punters' are grey haired (if any hair present that is) and middle to old aged. Very few of the 20's 30's bracket.

Thread: Steel boiler storage.
10/05/2019 12:51:37

It may not be applicable to your boiler Brain, but newly made steel/copper riveted boilers in days gone by where routinely store outside to 'weather' for a time, the resulting corrosion helping to seal caulked seams.

Presumably there would have been a lot of blown out cylinder ends on the S&D post 1864. Also a lot of dead patternmakers must be revolving in their plots!

Hope you didn't pay a lot for it Derek

I wonder if anyone on this forum suffered being taught the Initial Training Alphabet (I.T.A.) in the late 60's / 70's

as I did ? The experiment was a dismal failure that condemned many children to a life time of misspelling . Thank heavens for 'speel cheack'

Thread: Help identifying Swiss files
23/04/2019 12:23:14

If you are looking to buy Swiss files I would consider getting a round, half round, flat and square of the Grobert/Vallorbe brand (excellent in my opinion) because these are likely to be the ones you use the most. Additional files you can then acquire if and when from cheaper manufacturers as you won't use these nearly as much. Many good competitive retailers of jewelers tools on 'Orinoco'.

22/04/2019 12:40:25

Once global warming really starts to demonstrates the catastrophic consequences predicted by many and the total break down of civil society that is bound to follow in the wake of such cataclysmic change, I wonder if we will look back on this time of abundant and ubiquitous electric power with teary eyed nostalgia or condemn our cumulative profligacy at its misuse. So, think on next we charge our mobile devices or motor 1/4 of a mile to get a daily paper. Dystopia beckons!

Me too, been 'bottoming out' my workshop (two days so far) It must be the Spring cleaning bug. Built quiet a sizable scrap heap outside but I know full well that I'll spend tomorrow retrieving most of it as 'too good to throw' probably until next years Spring clean and ditto repeato.

19/04/2019 17:31:19

I too would use a tank cutter, perhaps sandwiching the work piece in between a couple of scrap copper to minimize

any burring. Hole saws tend to 'rag' when cutting copper I've found.

From what I can gather the French State is responsible for the repairs which is a little surprising considering France is a secular state.
