Thread: Warco 712 Bandsaw
05/04/2021 09:37:35

When someone asks for peoples opinions on a particular tool/material/process or other, so long as those responses are well meant and honest comments what's the problem? Surely the dissemination of knowledge and opinions is the res on detra of this community.

Thread: Aldi Scheppach bandsaw
13/03/2021 22:38:32

Been thinking about buying one of these band saws for a while now, one thing I'd like to know is do they have the ability to be used in a similar fashion as conventional band saw? i.e a small table that a work piece can be manually fed into the blade as some other portable saws seem to have

Thread: Building a small bench
07/03/2021 11:14:06

Just finished a similar bench - perhaps a little heavier - to take a Warco Major, The only thing that I found helped the stability of the structure was to use halving joints on the lower rails and coach bolts. Also treated the bottoms of the legs with wood preserver.

Thread: Engineering / Modelling Books for Winter Evenings?
13/02/2021 19:43:35

One book I found very instructive this winter lockdown was 'Locomotive Boiler Explosions' by C.H.Hewison. Both technical and historical interest to be had with photos and drawings. Even in the later days of the British steam locomotive catastrophic boiler failures occurred.

I think what you have is tendonitis, I have had it intermittently for many years and simple finger exercises/stretches help me considerably.

Unfortunately your observations on club politics are as relevant in the model engineering world as they are in any other organisations I feel. It's often the case that an individual who seeks office will gather around him/her a clique of acolytes to support and enforce his particular dogmatic agenda and through this have his ego 'massaged'. Having said that any progressive organisation requires direction and drive to fulfil the memberships aspirations, and therefore, I feel, it's up to the membership to provide direction and guidance in a spirit of common purpose, but this must takes the form of 'loyal opposition' to avoid the classic mistake of 'in fighting' so common in many hobby clubs and organisations. If the common goal becomes blurred and indistinct any enthusiasm/good will evaporate and atrophy will set in accompanied schisms.

Thread: Retractable wheels etc for moving a Lathe ?

You'll be amazed as to what you can move on a few short lengths of 20mm conduit pipe so long as you have a flat hard surface and patience.

Thread: Seen It All Now - Bah Humbug
18/12/2020 09:25:07

In these very tense and uncertain times, I for one will be going into self enforced lockdown in my workshop and not emerging until this dark pestilential cloud has passed. I am of course talking about Christmas!

Thread: Pea shooters illegal
12/12/2020 17:48:23

I hope you store your RPG in a tin box just like the other explosives we keep come 5th Nov each year. Your shot gun however, should you feel the need of such, MUST be kept in a tin box with a tiny pad lock on it, for extra safety you understand.

Like so much of our legislation, EPP regs were a 'knee jerk something must be done' reaction to acid in the face acts of unspeakable violence. The, perhaps unintended consequences, of such hasty actions is the unavailability of basic chemicals for private use and the risk of making otherwise law abiding individuals into criminals. Immediately after The Archers I will be turning my self in to my local nick (subject to it being open naturally).

I for one fully support the ban on these vile weapons, does no one recall the spate bank hold ups in 'The Smoke' a few years ago? Hardened criminal said to be "packing shooters" robbed banks, building societies and chip shops * (the latter probably to stock up with ammunition).

* Explanation for Southerners: Fish and Chip shops in the north sell mushy pees, a delicacy made from dried legumes. Sometimes mistaken for guacamole.

Wow! You get to keep your taps in the front room and washers (makes refreshing a change from dish and clothes) in the kitchen, pure opulence indeed. Respect.

Thread: Passenger weight limits

All so how does the larger body affect the centre of gravity of riding cars? Especially when the individual decides to shift his/her weight to take selfie on a radius.

Thread: Workshop temperature - cold

I find a wood burning stove has more than one benefit, the primeval pleasure of sitting around a fire is one and another is the material I find for reuse while 'skip diving' for fuel wood.

Dear old Fred Dibnah, peace be upon him, called himself a 'Back Street Mechanic' and he did have a university degree or two in that very subject.

Better a serial starter than a 'Gunner' Robert (Gunner start this and Gunner start that). Lots of years experience on this forum let alone common sense to be gleaned.
