Nigel b plasma cutters and welders are very different in operation and currents I’m not aware of any dual purpose machines at all plasma’s are generally in these small hobby machines only 40 amp mig welders you want 80+ It will be interesting as to what turns up in store as the description is all mig wireless welder and the pics all plasma cutter Edited By Ian Parkin on 12/01/2020 18:47:41 Ian. There are a multitude of multi use welders on the market. Some industrial some for hobbyists. Many do Plasma/MMA/stick & Mig. I had one in the workshop before I retired. I think it was a LOTOS if I recall correctly. regards |

The same goes for Boxford items. Isn’t that simply the regular case of vendors looking for a mug. Nothing unusual. in that. Edited By not done it yet on 12/01/2020 18:30:47 Yes I reckon so. |

At the moment there are a number of accessories for Smart & Brown on ebay UK, at the hugely inflated prices wanted, it is no wonder that most of that stuff is just sitting there month after month unsold. The same goes for Boxford items. One seller on Ebay bought an item from me and relisted it at more than 5 times the price he paid for it. It has now been sitting on Ebay for over a year. I did not know he was a dealer but when I saw the listing I knew the item from an identifying mark on it. As far as I am concerned the item is not worth anything like the listed price. Then again I suppose it is worth what someone is willing to pay. I always sold my spare Boxford items at a cost that made me a little and also helped someone to repair or better their lathe at a reasonable cost. I am afraid its dog eat dog these days for everything. regards |

They look like a set of indents to locate a lever or something similar. Probably in the right order ie indent, spring, plunger, grub screw. Sorry cannot help further. Some more pictures and a further explanation may help. regards |

I suppose you could say if compressor was at 80psi, if the piston was the same area as one square inch, taking into account the piston rod, then you would get a force of 80 lbs on end of the ram, or would pressure split between foot of ram and head ? I was getting a rough idea of what is needed and then probably try one of the Chinese rams on that auction site. One with 500mm stroke is only £20.00, so in the event of failure then not too much to waste. Those with the four external tie rods look to be a stronger proposition, than those where the ends are just screwed into the alloy sleeve. Mike. What auction site would that be then ????? regards |
Thread: Hi from Sleaford |
11/01/2020 17:56:55 |
Hi Martin Welcome to the forum. Nice to have a good size workshop. When I was teenager (many moons ago) I remember going with my father to Sleaford cattle market every couple of weeks. If I remember rightly they have a really fancy war memorial in front of the church. regards |
Thread: Colchester rescue. |
11/01/2020 17:43:21 |
Nice rescue. As with most things if the major parts are good (in this case Bed Gearbox Carriage) then a machine can be restored to reasonably good working order by enthusiasts even if not viable for a company to do. regards |

In case people do not know Yahoo groups is being shut down by Verizon, Yahoo's new owners. The Unimat site is being transferred to Unimat. Not a member so not sure of the state of play at this time. It seems many of the Yahoo groups are transferring to www.groups.io and there is a bit of a backlog at the minute. regards |
Thread: Bottled Gas Suppliers |
10/01/2020 15:45:52 |
I have used SGS Gases since I retired and stopped paying BOC for rental bottles. They have many distributors throughout the country. Their agents include Motor Parts Direct, All vehicle Parts and many others. I have collected in my 4x4 many times. No problems with how or which way bottles were collected/loaded. Always had excellent service from them. I paid a one off fee for the bottles and now just pay the cost of gas on exchange. They have several agents around Cambridgeshire. regards |

IMHO the first thing to do is use a centre in the tailstock and recheck the measurements. A piece of 56mm material of more than a few Cms stickout is not going not going to run perfectly true in a 3 jaw chuck. Or run between centres and see how the results compare. regards |
Thread: Australian Bush Fires |

@ Paul Lousick. I have been following the fires in Aus' as I have friends in Victoria and Tasmania. Our thoughts go out to all who are affected by the fires. We hope that rain comes soon to help alleviate the problem. Best wishes & good luck in the coming weeks. regards |
Thread: Question about Harrison lathe |

I doubt if you can still get all the spares. You will probably have to search hard for them. You could try Harrison or Ebay or G&M Tools. Google is your friend. regards |

Have any of you bought these from the auction site? They are very much cheaper than anywhere else so I’m wondering If they are any good. Would that be EBAY then Vic. Sorry but I find it quicker to type EBAY than " the auction site" Most cheaper tips will be OK up to a point. I find the tips from Banggood to be good. They seem to last pretty well and don't chip easily if you push them a bit. Check out Doubleboosts Banggood reviews on YouTube. regards

Thread: Burnt hands |
29/12/2019 12:34:06 |
Hi Bill. I have been gas welding, brazing & silver soldering since I was a boy on the farm 6o odd years ago. I have never had a burn on my hands through the process of actually welding. The occasional blister by being stupid and picking some thing up before it cooled is usually the problem Any of the welders gloves should be OK for silver soldering. A decent pair of tongs or pliers for moving things around should stop any accidents. I rarely use gloves and then only on my left hand when gas welding unless using very short pieces of rod but I usually join them so they are more than a foot long. regards |
