Thread: 90 Degree end mill |
03/06/2018 20:11:20 |
Thanks Jason. I am making a tool to hold round bar so I can drill holes through it at 90 degrees to the axis. The block will mount in the tail stock with the round bar clamped in the V. I am using a piece of square stock mild steel and intend to mount it on a blank end arbour. This is practice for me in thinking about the design and the order of machining steps. There will be a hole through the V and the centre of the block to provide relief behind the bar for the drill to break through. Currently trying to decide whether to drill the hole and machine the pocket for the blank end arbour before or after I cut the V. It is important that the V and the hole coincide at the centre. |

Thanks Andrew, I hadn't thought about what would be happening at the tip of the tool. I can't run a slit down it so it looks like I will be tilting the block and doing some marking out. I needs the practice as milling is new to me |

I want to cut a 90 degree V groove in a rectangular block. I have seen videos describing techniques using an 'ordinary' end mill and measuring, mounting the block at a 45 degree angle etc. but it strike me that an end mill with a 90 degree shaped end would be an easier way of doing things. I have searched for 90 degree end mills but the results are almost universally described as 'chamfering tools', are they the same thing or am I using the wrong search terms ? |

With the delivery and installation of the Sieg SC4-510 lathe and the SX2.7 Hi Torque Mill the workshop tooling is mostly complete. I am just tidying up a bit and getting things sorted out so here is a quick tour round |

And the mill |
01/06/2018 23:14:34 |
The SC4 lathe and stand plus SX2.7 mill arrived this morning😊 With the help of my daughter and son in law and a couple of sets of ratchet straps we soon had the mill on the stand that had gone in the other day. Next build the stand for the lathe. Move the support for the ratchet straps and pass each round a web between the ways on the bed so the lathe is suspended on its centre line. Balance was helped by moving the saddle towards the tailstock. Then lift the lathe high enough to position the stand underneath and drop it down onto the studs. Jobs a good un 😀👍 |

Today my wife and I took a trip to Arceurotrade to have a chat with Keatan. I ordered myself the current Sieg SC4 lathe bundle and the SX2.7 milling machine and stand. Came away a very happy bunny and spent the afternoon sorting the workshop to make sure all will fit in the spaces I have planned. Required a bit of shifting of stuff around but it will all fit in the end |
Thread: Classified Ad photo |

Thanks Neil. I did try removing the image that wasn't there, the system liked that, and then uploaded the image again but to no avail 😟 I will try deleting the add tomorrow and upload it again from a PC rather than the iPad. |

I have loaded a classified Ad (Myford ML4) but the image I thought I had uploaded isn't visible and I can't see edit or change the image when I try to 'manage my ad'. Any words of wisdom please? Many thanks, Nige |

Thread: Oilers simple Myford ML4 mandrel |
05/05/2018 22:11:45 |
Thank you Brian and V8Eng, exactly what I wanted. Wish I had known they were properly called 'cup oilers' it would have made my Google search more fruitful. Oh well, you live and learn 😊 Nige |

The Myford ML4 has really simple oilers for the mandrel bearings. They are a small cup that is a friction fit in a hole in the headstock above the bearing. They have a simple spring loaded cap and a capacity of just a few ml of oil. Couldn't be much simpler but I can't find a supplier for them. Any ideas wher I can get them please? |
Thread: Files to print Myford ML4 change gears |
17/03/2018 11:51:11 |
Finally got back to this project and took a short cut by downloading some Myford gears from a contributor to Thingiverse. However, I immediately came unstuck when I imported the file to Ultimaker Cura. The 65 tooth gear opened up in Ultimaker as a tiny object about 6mm across and 0.3mm thick instead of the 3 inches in diameter i was expecting. I realise I can scale the model but that is of limited use unless you know the dimensions the object is supposed to have and shouldn't really be necessary should it?. It seems that somewhere the original dimensions of the object have been lost and I'm scratching my head as to why this should be? Any ideas please ? |

Thank you everybody. I have sent a file to my buddy across the pond and just waiting for some feedback |
19/02/2018 22:49:33 |
I was discussing the idea of printing gears for my Myford ML4 with a buddy of mine who works for Arcam in the US of A. We had started out talking about domestic hobby type printers and he offered to print me some gears if I could supply the relevant files. I have created a Makerbot account on Thingyverse and looked for files and come up with some for the Myford ML7 and Super 7 which I believe are the same as the ML4 apart form having a keyway in the bore and a lack of holes for the silver steel wire to make up the compound sets, no big problem. Is there anywhere else to look for files besides Thingyverse and should I be able to create the necessary type of file in Fusion 360, which I am scratching about with, please? Also any thoughts on the relative merits (or not) of delta printers over their cartesian cousins? I am told the Delta printers print faster but dont know enough about either type yet! |

You could always try Fusion 360 Phil H1. Its extremely well featured and there are lots of online help videos notably by a guy called Lars Christenson on YouTube. The software is not huge as it runs online so always upto date and best is it is the whole package is free to hobby users.

Thread: Has anyone regretted migrating from MS Winows to Linux? |

Installing Ubuntu is as complex as sticking in a DVD and checking a few questions. Roger Mmmm, not quite. Downloaded Ubuntu ISO file and wrote it to DVD. Stuck it in drive and answered a few questions yes but then on the compulsory restart it all fell apart leaving an error message. I then spent nearly 2 hours searching for help on the error message and got nowhere other than a few references to a very similar error message that was constantly referred to as a 'bug' but with no further help apparent. Like any operating system, Linux is great when it works when it doesn't it is quite as bad as any other OS that is giving trouble. |
