Thread: Minnie Traction Engine Boiler Problem Question
08/11/2017 14:32:50

Hello Roy, and Brian, Thank yiou both for your replies.

Roy I am more than ever confused, as I have had another look at page 18, and also read the original Me magazine article and can find no mention of 2 1/6" !!!

Brian, thanks for your calculation ity does seem that within a smidge it does not matter. I find dealing with imperial measurements is confusing . Therefore I tend to convert the Imperial to metric ( I have a big chart as a crib sheet).

I will fiddle about with both your ideas and proceed from there

Best wishes to you both

Malcolm

I have completed my Front Wheels,, Flywheel, and Chimney, and am now tring to concentrate on the Boiler, but I have a problem.-

I can find no detail in either the drawings or in L.C.Masons book as to the verticle position of the Firewhole Ring. I know it is fitted central in the Verticle axis, but at what distance from either the top or the bottom of the Plate. Equally I presume this, when finished will then link up with the Backhead - (am i correct in that thinking ?.)

No doubt there are amny of you out there who can give me details of the measurement I seek.

When I have eventually completed the boiler I will post photos of where I have got to.

In anticipation....MANY THANKS

Thread: Materials in Imperial for the Minnie

JasonB, Good morning, and a big thank you.

I am sure I can get all that I need from this list of supliers

As everything I have from the drawings to the castings I feel it best if I use only Imperial Materials.

I have looked via Google , but cannot seem to find a ready supply of items (Brass, Steel etc that are sold on Imperial sizes.

I am sure supplier must be there. At the Bristol ME EXhibition there were suppliers, but I failed to note names ertc.

Any Ideas of where to go.

In anticipation Thanks and best wishes

Thread: Silver solder and Flux
08/09/2017 10:16:23

Thank you all for your responses.

The last time I did any "Boiler workm is 60plus years ago. and yes then it was using a blowlamp. Obviously things have moved on !!

07/09/2017 14:00:10

I have read somewhere that it is sensible to use two different silver solders if on need t add items. a normal one, and a higher melting one. For example in making a boiler. Is this correct and if so which Johnson Mathey rods and flux is recommended.

In anticipation thanks.

Malcolm,

Reeves 2000 advise me that in these two issues of ME there is an article on building the MINNIE Traction Engine.

Does anyone have copies of these, and if so could they copy the relevant pages. I would of course be happy to pay for them plus any postage cost.

Many thanks

Thread: Lathe Metal Turning Tools
11/07/2017 11:00:42

Many many thanks for all your replies.
My lathe is a Warco 250V, which seems to suit my abilities very well.

I used to do a lot of very complicated Segmented wood turning, but the dust from toxic wood ruined my (now 80) old lungs !!.

As a youth I did quite a lot of metal work on a Drummond lathe. I am now endeavouring to make a Stuart Model Stationary steam engine.

I am using bits with inserts, which do work fine.

The only tool I do not seem to be able to find is a really good parting Tool. I do not want one with inserts. Is it better to have a High Speed Steel one or is a Carbide one better.

Again in anticipation to everyone ....THANK YOU

I do like to try and finish all my work to a high standard

09/07/2017 17:51:37

I have a number of Lathe Tools, but am not sure any are of "High Quality"

Anyone with suggestions as to where to go for REALLY good ones.

Any ideas MOST welcome

John, Good morning, and thank you for your response.

Yes to Mac3 operating on X, Y and Z correctl, which presumably means that Mack 3 is communicating via the USB connection with the CNC.

Yes I think all cables a re connected and plugged in.

Alas I do not understand what the VFD is, and how it operates the Router. I gather that the Router is run of 3 phase (which again I do not understand (Alas old age is a big burden !!)

I think in theory that it opossible using Code M03 S12000 to make the spindle run, but it is not.

My email address is [email protected] if you care to email me your phone number I will telephone youy to discuss.

I am so grateful for any help I can get.

Regards Malcolm

22/04/2017 12:05:59

Vic, Thanks for the response. I pray you are correct, and that someone will come to my aid.

21/04/2017 15:39:07

I live in the Bristol area and have a GX-6060 CNC, which has suddenly said it does not want to work. X, Y and Z all perform perfectly, but the Router will not operate. The Mach 3 screen shows the anticipated spindle speed. I have a great friend, who has help-ed me in the past (let me just say I am almost 80, and know nothing about electricity ) Alas my Guru is currently in hospital so is unable to give me assistance. In conversation he does asy that he is confident that ther is nothing wrong with the Spindle motor, The Inverter or Mach3. Therfore it must be the communication between them. I think the initial problem was caused by a loose USB connection, which then stopped X, Y nad Z working, but kept the Router spinning. I closed everthing down, but as I said all works except the Router willl not.

HELP ! HELP! I am VERY happy to pay anyone who can come here and sort me out
