Thread: Powder coating quality of finish |
10/07/2021 22:26:30 |
I agree that powder coating can be very successful in certain applications but the result can vary. I learned my lesson years ago when I had a set of wire wheels ex-Morgan powder coated. These can flex where the spoke enters the rim or hub thus fracturing the coating and causing corrosion to creep under it. This was never really resolved and the best cure was a new set of (painted) wheels. Best wishes John B

Thread: Fusible plug in a 5" gauge copper boiler? |
05/07/2021 22:41:12 |
Thank you for all your comments and advice! It seems pretty clear to me that there is little advantage in fitting a fusible plug into a 5" gauge copper boiler. It was a good discussion. Kind regards John B

What are the pros and cons for putting a fusible plug in the copper boiler of my Claud, under construction? I have never really found it necessary in my 5" Manor and I am minded to omit it unless there are good reasons not to. Kind regards John B

Thread: Brazing Hearth |
08/06/2021 19:30:23 |
Thank you all for your comments - much appreciated. I have some Thermalite blocks or similar that I might use. Plan to mount them in an angle iron frame - I just wonder what the best size would be? I can visualise a 5 1/2" boiler barrel red hot - I don't want it going anywhere else! John B

Any tips and ideas for creating a hearth suitable for making a medium size 5" gauge loco boiler? Thanks John B |
Thread: 30 hour clock electric winder |
18/05/2021 22:34:12 |
A friend has 17 clocks to wind every week and he uses a hand held electric drill. This has a key in the chuck with the "wings" cut off. John B.

I haven't received the latest issue. How can I check that all is well with my account? Thanks John B |
Thread: Painting staircase spindles |
12/05/2021 19:56:32 |
There is a job worse than that - getting paint off staircase spindles. Ours were white painted - ugh - in a Victorian house (built by the GWR incidentally). After that huge job with Nitromors and wire wool we varnished them and they have looked good ever since. And will never want repainting! John B |

08/05/2021 12:26:45 |

Thanks Gerald Sorry to come back again. No luck so far. I am opening with alternative viewer. Not even sure how I get to the print stage! Do I use the print icon on the right hand bar on the screen, or use my system print? Tried both though without success. Are we supposed to convert the whole mag to pdf then print selected pages? Wish it was simpler though! I have must a block somewhere as I can manage most things on the pc. Kind regards John

I have tried all this plus Jason's suggestion but it does not work for me - I end up with either a blank sheet of paper or a very small unreadable image. Are there any official instructions without having to resort to numerous posting threads? Why is it so difficult? In the meantime I have been in the workshop doing something productive! But apologies if I missed something obvious..... John B

Thread: Printing digital edition pages |
02/05/2021 11:30:48 |
Thanks Gerald But does that mean I have to pay a subs to Pocketmags as well? I's rather not. Kind regards John B

I think this has been covered recently but can I be reminded how to print pages from my digital subs MEW? Many thanks John B

Thread: Dore-Westbury mills |

Assuming single phase 220/240v a 500w motor will be fine. I have Mk 1 but I believe the Mk2 is no different in this respect. Kind regards JB |
Thread: Digital back issues |
04/04/2021 15:33:12 |
Thanks Jason. John |

Apologies if I have missed something obvious but is it possible to access digitally back issues of MEW as a digital subscriber. What I have seen only applies to Apple/Apple Mac that I don't have. Kind regards John B |
Thread: Crank pins |
11/07/2020 22:33:59 |
On a two cylinder engine how does the outside coupling rod crank pine relate to the inside con rod crank pin? Should they line up as in an outside cylinder design? I am sure there is a simple answer, but it's late at night! Kind regards John B

Thread: How are your clubs responding to Coronavirus |
28/03/2020 18:00:43 |
Reading SME has decided to defer collecting 2020/21 subscriptions, due on 1 April, until activities can be resumed at the club. Members can then pay pro rata. Should they choose to pay for a full year then the balance can be gift aided. With kind regards to all. John B.
