OMG. Is there no end to Pocketmags problems and aggravations?

299 has turned up, at last. Happily flipped through its pages, only to be told, after the last page, that they hoped I enjoyed reading "This sample edition" and would I like to pay $7.99 for it, or to take out a subscription. ( which I already have, needless to say)

Where did MTM find these cretins? Was a competition held internationally to select the very worst possible magazine repository that would, kicking and screaming all the way, display the magazine with the barest minimum of functionality. Heaven forfend, for example that it should allow printing of even the current page, or cutting and pasting it into an email . The list of what it wont do is long and infuriating, given that the cost even after buying a print subscription, trivial.

Michael ..... way down under

Hmmm, just checked my Pocketmags and I have the standard end of mag 'please consider sub' message, the same as on all my other subscriptions.

As far as not being able to copy/paste items from the mag I'm able to snip parts of page or convert up to 2 pages at a time to pdf quite happily so maybe this is an Aussie thing! devil

I see you've only done 6 posts all about one magazine, maybe this forum/hobby isn't for you, possibly one that does rant management?

As far as the rest of your message I decline to reply to your warped views.

Hi Phil,

crylics are a different kettle of fish inasmuch they dry much faster and tend not to have as glossy finish as oil based. use of extenders help to control drying time.

Thread: Workshop temperature - cold

Around here you can't get bulk deliveries unless you have central heating tanks, my supply is a 39 mile round trip but I can put up with that with getting 120 ltrs for £50 and it's also cheap diesel so I fill the car up as well! It's a 2 or 3 year trip after all! smiley

04/12/2020 12:45:02

My 7 x 5 Metre workshop stands about 3.5 m high at the apex and is lined with 100mm insulation in the roof and 50mm in the walls. I have a diesel night heater, purchased on Ebay, which I run on kerosene, much cheaper and cleaner than diesel!

Exhauster outlet insulated from the timber

img_20201204_102454.jpg

100ltrs of kerosene, this will last me 2 to 3 years.

I turn this on when I get up (if I'm workshopping), walk the dogs and have brekkie and by that time the chill is taken off and it's comfortable to work in even if the outside temp is wee below zero.

Only downside is that the metal and machinery is cold to the touch but I have ways around that devil.

If I need it warmer for painting I just ramp up the heater and leave it on overnight, at less than 50p per ltr it doesn't break the piggy bank.

.Hi Neil,

MEW arrived this morning and ME 3653 arrived yesterday but the digital versions are not showing on Pocketmags!

Any reason why? Only asking as I normally receive these a week before the paper copy.

I only ask since I am certain I spotted a fishing boat in the background of your piccies

Haha, no that's a Modav Fairey Hunstman for restoration but I do have a Billing Boats Rainbow fishing cutter static kit to convert, must get my skates on and get it done laugh

So have I missed something and this drill does not have a MT extractor slot in the spindle?

Yes you missed the lot and I really wished it had crying

I have ordered one from Arc Euro and it should be with me by tomorrow, Emma @ Meddings replied to me today regarding spares for the drill, they only had a s/h safety guard carrier @ too much money so I'll make my own.

Hi Joe, welcome,

That begs a number of questions:

What do you want the lathe for?

How much can you afford bearing in mind an appreciable outlay in lathe tooling and other kit?

How much room do you have?

No doubt others will be along with their input soon smiley

Thread: Bench Drill identification
23/11/2020 15:20:13

Well, what a surprise, I received an email from Emma @ Meddings machine tools this morning. I now know my machine was born in May 1954 so I was about 2 1/2 then!

I cleaned up the taper and put the 10th indicator and could see no discernable run-out or bearing wear, good enough for me.

Roger

22/11/2020 15:06:13

Woohoo! success laugh

I made a couple of wedges after seeing the price of commercial items and orft it jolly well popped. smiley

success!.jpg

The top taper measured approx:

top taper.jpg

and the bottom:

bottom taper.jpg

So it seems to be in the realms of a J6 taper.

Now to give myself a heart attack and see how much a half inch keyless chuck is going to cost Santa! devil

Thanks for all your help and advice, much appreciated.

As promised here is a couple of photos from inside the chuck. Do they help with identifying if it's a taper or a screwed chuck?

I think you're right but I will wait for Meddings for a couple of days but I'll take a photo right inside the chuck and post it as I'm sure that it is the end of the spindle that can be seen.

Close up photo of the chuck/spindle area would assist. It appears to be a taper fit so the opposed wedges type of remover would work OK.

Thanks Michael, any words you wish said at the cremation? angel

I have sent an email to Meddings in the hope of a parts list or manual as they do still stock certain wear parts, not the quill though.

I have, for my WM250V-F lathe; a spare belt & a lead screw 1/2 nut, thought it a good idea at the time, several 10 amp glass fuses ( for Mill as well ), both with individual resettable RCB's

George.

I replaced my m/c fuses with quality resettable fuses, soo much easier smiley

Any chuck should fit - if you choose a suitable arbor. It is worth a good quality keyless chuck if used a fair amount.

Yep but I don't know if it's on a taper or threaded!

There is no readable id on the chuck. I have a number of chucks available but until I can remove it I don't know what fits. I can't attempt to remove it until I know the form of attachment in case I cause irreparable damage.
