Thread: A red face and a bottlejack
08/06/2020 15:01:29

Try pushing the handle all the way down and holding it there, I've got a couple that work like this. It may be reluctant to compress if not under load so you might have to apply some force to the top as well.

Thread: Storing & Documenting Your Tooling?
03/06/2020 10:58:18

On a work project we had the asset register spreadsheet linked to a similar printer, so on receipt of an item at goods-in you updated the spreadsheet for each item and then it generated the matching labels which were then affixed to each item before it went into use.

Barcoding was also an option which allowed the inventory to be checked at intervals. Nowadays you'd have the labels RFID enabled to make it all contactless and doorway scanners to allow you to monitor when an item leaves/enters an area...rather OTT for the home workshop but worthwhile in industrial applications.

Thread: Hydraulic Motor
26/05/2020 09:35:10

Hydraulic motors are common on agricultural equipment, so if you happen to live in rural parts then an ag. engineering firm may be able to help.

Thread: Set up tool???
20/05/2020 12:34:28

Interesting technique. It occurs to me that one could achieve the same with a straight rod pushed through a rose joint, perhaps held in the toolpost or on a mag base.

Can you then rely on the centre dimple to check tailstock alignment?

Thread: Plillow block bearing assemblies for layshaft
07/05/2020 15:40:33

Yep, I have a pair on the layshaft of my lathe for that reason so I know how they work and why for fitting purposes but I had seen the dust seals and as they spun nicely taken them as sealed for life and not thought any further about lubrication. Fortunately as noted for occasional hobby use this doesn't matter.

07/05/2020 11:44:38

I've got some similar to these. I think the nipple only lubricates the swivel that copes with shaft misalignment, the actual bearings I suspect are pre-greased and sealed.

Edit, on the other hand if you google the serial number for the insert there does appear to be a feature that could be a hole into the race for lubrication....another new thing learned.

Thread: Tooling for a spline

They look similar to the wire wheel halfshafts I once had on an MG midget so something of that lineage may be worth a try, e.g. this from an MGA

Thread: turner walker pillar drill
03/09/2017 15:43:03

I've been pondering the same for my recently acquired Buffalo. There's a nice idea here for a planetary gear pulley:

Thread: Raw black rubber
31/08/2017 16:32:31

Have you thought of trying plumbers adhesive mastic, Tigerseal or similar? This is thick black and sticky but dries to a rubbery consistency and would probably hold a moulded shape.

I don't know its longevity but the outside galvanised tank that I glued up a couple of years back is still holding water.

All worth a listen if you have the technology.

Thread: Where (apart from ebay) to look for a pillar drill base?
23/08/2017 10:08:42

Thanks all for suggestions, especially the Walker Turner as that looks like it would fit without much work.

22/08/2017 08:57:09

Indeed, but as you note transport costs would be disproportionate!

I've put up a wanted ad, will pay £50 for a nice one delivered to my door, less for a tatty but usable or if I have to go and fetch it. Meantime I think I will bolt it to a chunk of kitchen worktop.

22/08/2017 08:26:05

I've uploaded pictures of the drill and base into an album, hopefully shared (ignore general mess and the additional stand which comes off a woodworking drill and is much too small)

@John, yes, but it would have to be true and flat on top as there is no separate table with this design, photo should make it clearer.

@Nathan, I'll try and track down something that fits first, but thanks and I may come back to you if no luck.

@John R, yes, a nice flat piece of steel would work but ideally it would have some mounting slots for a vice, something like the one fitted to this model:

I'll add a wanted advert once I reach the "enough posts" threshold, but otherwise if anyone knows of a machine breaker or graveyard please speak up.

New member here. I have acquired a Buffalo 15" pillar drill which seems in good order, however the base is an enormous sawn off half of a twin drill setup (cut by hand with a hacksaw would you believe) and too big for where I want to put it.

Where might I look for an alternative base? It has a 2-3/4" round column with a square mount approx 5-1/2" x 6-1/2" so two options at least available.

Thanks.

Thread: How do post on forum

Same interest, trying to see advert details to discover whether a seller is anywhere near me.
