Thread: Model Engineers Workshop Lost The Plot
10/06/2017 16:27:45

Tim Stevens.... I was merely explaining a possible reason for the errors. That does not indicate that I accept the situation

I am sorry for your health, and road condition problems, but are you in purchasing mew(or taking part in this forum) allowing your hobby to be managed in the manner that is the cause of your objection?

You have the facility to ,in a limited way, have to change doctors government and council

As a personal gripe the IT revolution sees an increasing number of amateurs playing at professionals as a result the service (?) standards diminish in proportion. No doubt there are other views..............

I find David Clarks remarks unpleasant. The MEW editor has advised the forum that he has neither time, budget or skill to check the content of the magazine. Nuff said???

Assuming the pic is the guys workbench, he has some serious 'weeding' to do. Swarf, sawdust and spiders in my shed, but plant life never. Perhaps I should avoid the question as to the nature and purpose in 'weed' culture.😈😈

One can blame the educational system for the decline in writing standards but very little is said about reading standards and comprehension. See what you understand by the following.

Forestress, redial, bedrape, inter..........all may not be as it 'seems' 🙄

Mr Gilligan.... If said clause is reasonable....I am nowhere near Clapham or even on an omnibus.......but on the other hand I have passed a few exams around this subject. I am now of an age where knowing the answers is not of much value as nobody asks me the questions

To prove I followed your link, i do not remember horse buses, but was reminded that as a child the 35 bus route in N London required the use of an exterior staircase to the upper deck, this at a time DO NOT SPIT was an essential request of passengers. Times (and clauses!)change??????????

05/06/2017 11:37:12

Reading clause 7 mentioned above..........why would anybody purchase a service that can cease or be withdrawn or modified without notice. Does such a clause pass the legal definition of 'reasonable?' There's me thinking only a Government could get elected on a promise of 'triple lock' and net migration reduced to 100.000 and fail to deliver on both,

Many years ago when I was mentored by an elderly JAP enthusiast as to the working of a rotary relief valve timing, he would at times wax lyrical about Manchester plate as a material. Sixty years have passed and I still have no idea what this material is, or even heard further mention of the material.

Thread: The diesel controversy

.On the subject of homogation and approval the wider matter of safety to the general public is obvious.

What is less obvious is how this affects the individual and how this impacts on what can or cannot be done to road vehicles. Being able to make a replacement part on a lathe or mill is possible, but introducing the part to a road going vehicle may in the case of an accident have severe legal consequences which the wise should be aware. Finding you are not covered by your vehicle insurance will be the least of your worries, especially if third party personal injuries are involved, the loss of your home, workshop and personal liberty are at stake. Even more worrying is that a vehicle repairer may use non approved parts THIS IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO CHECK.

But I guess that a majority will take a chance and you are not guilty as long as no one knows!!!!!!

Mr Stevenson...... There are those on this forum who THINK they know everything much to the annoyance of those that DO. My only concern is presenting the truth in a manner that is decipherable to those willing to learn

Neil.....with respect Kiwi Bloke is suggesting a little more than truncating/cropping. If an article is complex

1 do not print the article

2 have the article checked by a competent third party

Given that there was no great clamour as to errors by subscribers, perhaps the article was too complex for the average reader. And there's me thinking computers solved the worlds logic problems!! But then Kiwi Bloke could be wrong?

Thread: Turning a finned aluminium cylinder barrel for a motorcycle
06/04/2017 09:49:39

Jason....my memory suggests thats the 1947 type

More fins than Helsinki!!!!!!!!

05/04/2017 14:05:41

Jason...... Sorry no I lack the ability to do . As I mentioned earlier I sought info from AMOC, the owners club, their engine spares list has an image which I assumed was similar to Andrews. It's very small but when seen machining from solid is beyond my conception .

I think that the advice given to Andrew is mistaken. If upon viewing the cylinder casting the problem would be more obvious. There is also a risk that I am wrong.

The cylinder shapes I have seen show in non technical terms show a squashed circular shape with the bore offset to one side, thus one side has very little finning and the opposite side a lot of finning. The deeper side has U shaped cut outs presumably for push rod tubes.if you turn on C/L of bore you can only achieve the depth of fin for the short fin side. If you move to a false centre you leave both sides short of the depth of finning

I would assume that there is a "cooling" requirement to leave sufficient "meat" around the cylinder both for strength and cooling. The "Side on" shape of the also a factor as it requires the taper on the fins to adjusted to each fin

I think that is Andrews problem to which he seeks help

Thread: Magneto file
04/04/2017 13:57:17

At the risk of answering the original question I was informed that the file mentioned was a BAR file, a term that now has a more bewildering use. The length of a magneto file odd as you can only use the first mms. in situ or dismantle part of the timing set up. Friends used to borrow mine to redo slot in screws SLOTCUTTING file?

Andrew.......whilst respecting previous advice if I were in your position I would (after viewing the odd shape on the AMOC site) suggest that you take the cylinder to a sympathetic caster and ask if cleaning up the fin area would produce a workable pattern. The option of using the original cylinder or purchasing a "Spare" to experiment on is yours. You then have the decision as to what "alloy" to use. Often exotic metals like electron a high magnesium alloy may require care in machining when used. You may have resort to a more "Useable" brew. Seek good advice

I have previously offered the Phil Irving book free on this forum but had no takers. If you would make yourself known via pm, it's yours for the asking
